Why did Murdoch target rugby league? The AFL seemed to coast through without anyone touching them
Who would you have picked in regards to the Sydney teams ?Because afl aren’t stupid and didn’t jump into bed until all offers where on the table. ARL signing a terrible tv deal when the clubs were already unhappy with way things were being run was a fertile soil to plant the seeds of revolution. That and not having the clubs signed to perpetual licenses and the ARL not owning the trademarks on club names and logos etc.
imagine if instead of a war ARL had offered sky the rights if they got proper funding and had restructured the comp with Adelaide and Melbourne and minus some Sydney clubs. We’d have an amazing 16 team national comp now that would be undisputed number 1 football code in the country.
1. Western Reds
2. Auckland Warriors
3. Adelaide Rams
4, Melbourne Storm
5. Canberra Raiders
6. Newcastle Knights
7. South Queensland Crushers
8. Gold Coast Chargers
9. NQ Cowboys
then the 7 strongest sydney clubs And/or mergers
that would have set the game up for decades and would have seen us massive across the country by now, what could have been.
I'd add the Broncos as the 10th team then another four from Sydney. Eels, Dragons, Roosters and Bulldogs would have made the cut in 98.Because afl aren’t stupid and didn’t jump into bed until all offers where on the table. This is the most bizarre comment.Maybe also no one really wanted the Pay TV rights for AFL?
It's almost as boring as following a competition based around 9 small Sydney clubs with no ambition of expanding into a national sport.who cares? geez this dwelling on super league war and the past gets boring

Gee if you add Ipswich, PNG and Wellington and drop Canberra & Newcastle, you could start your own comp, with a GF at SuncorpBecause afl aren’t stupid and didn’t jump into bed until all offers where on the table.
