Someone has to operate machines and maintain them .... some jobs is better than no jobsWhat would be the point of bringing back manufacturing if it's not to increase the blue-collar workforce?

YepIt's great isn't it. But what do you think will happen? It isn't illegal to answer calls or emails. What do you think will happen to the ones who refuse ( Which is their right) compared to the ones who don't mind answering them when it comes promotion time? Or if things get tight and someone needs to be laid off.
Put in extra and you have a higher chance of being rewarded. It's the Individuals choice. I've had annoying people think it's ok to ring anytime. So yes I get it but there will always be people prepared to push harder.
I dare say your newer immigrants and their children will be happy to do a little extra to get a little further and climb up the chain while plenty of others whinge about their rights.
Any jobs are better than no jobs. Plus the manufacturing will create demand for supporting services like robotics maintenance and transport and stuff. And ultimately more productivity means increased supply of stuff which brings prices down. What would be the point of bringing back manufacturing if it's not to increase the blue-collar workforce?
They can crow all they like about "It's illegal to sack me for being a deadshit!", if your boss thinks you're shit it'll hurt your career.how very labour of our govt, surprised to see Uber lending support to policies like this
imagine ScoMo supporting policies like this ?

All fair points, but AI / automation won’t suddenly make all those jobs lower pay than what they can do in China or Taiwan or Indonesia. They can build the factory cheaper, pay the supply chain staff f**k all, mine the raw material direct from Africa and have no qualms about human rights, and end result is it’s still more economical to make stuff overseas.Machine operators
Maintenance
The build of factory
Transporting stuff out
Cleaners
Storeman

Yes but they have to then get the stuff here. Shipping isn't cheap and always going up.
Wage growth in India is like 10%. That's what happens in developing nations.
Still cheaper than buying/hiring a warehouse, filling it full of staff and paying them every week, along with training fees, all the operating costs, etc.
If it wasn't cheaper overseas, they wouldn't be doing it.
Theres always some cheaper country for labour. Most of asian had its go, but we probably still have all of africa to cycle through. .... by then maybe the martians will be ready to be cheap labour.
Talking about importing, we've (I've) got problems with incoming via Suez Canal right now. It's going to be either flown in at $$ or boated via Cape Good Hope which is + 3 weeks. Just when Albo's inflation was looking better too. This is because of the Gaza thing and the merkins from Yemen.I've imported from various Asian countries, China is the only country I'll deal with now
India are by far the worst, they take forever then they want more money to finish the job, China have very good integrity in my experience
god knows what will happen to our economy if we ever fall out with China, so many of our wholesalers rely on China for their manufacturing and it keeps thier costs down
I don’t think that the LNP were happy that the cross bench put this through and their vote was irrelevant. Just a hunch.how very labour of our govt, surprised to see Uber lending support to policies like this
