I have vague recollections of Jane Kennedy in a show called Funky Squad. Think it was on Channel 4 in the UK.

Had a quick trawl on the net. Doesn't appear to be particularly well-regarded. I thought it was quite amusing. Made in the mid-90s, so more-or-less contemporaneous with the Beastie Boys video for Sabotage. Wonder which came first?

Hedgehog Sandwich was the title of the second NTNOCN album. There were Hedgehog flavoured crisps in UK shops around the same time. Manufacturers at pains to insist that no hedgehogs were harmed in the making thereof.

Several excellent musical parodies on NTNOCN.

"Gob On You" - Punk cliché

"I Like Bouncing" - Ska revival

"Super Duper" - Abba

A pounding quasi New Wave ditty called "All Out Superpower Confrontation" and my personal favourite, Pamela Stephenson's Kate Bush pastiche "England, My Leotard".
As a big Ska fan I loved "I like Bouncing" and the Kate Bush one was awesome(Kate is a personal favourite of mine with Hounds of Love being my alltime favourite album by any artist.. Just curious, you obviously lived in the UK. Whereabouts are you from?

Funky Squad was great, a great spoof of the old Mod Squad but yes it failed dismally in the ratings here.

Born and raised in Bolton, which is, as PVL might say, a rusted-on Soccer town. Most of my family though are from a suburb of North Manchester. The username is a conflation of Swinton Lions and the Culture song "Get Ready to Ride the Lion to Zion" from the Two Sevens Clash album.

The Ska Revival really took off when I was at secondary school. Ran adjacent to the Mod Revival inspired by the Quadrophenia film and the success of The Jam. Can remember cavorting about to the sound of "The Prince" and "One Step Beyond" at Christmas parties in 1979. Couple of months later, "Too Much Too Young" shot to number 1 on the singles chart.

Kate Bush is one of those artists where I'm not a huge fan in general but do have strong affections for particular tracks. Namely, "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Army Dreamers", "Sat in Your Lap". The first of these was apparently written when she was 13. Clearly not your average 13 year old.

In 1982 ABBA's star was waning and they weren't charting, Frida had a solo hit which rocketed straight up to no 5 on the charts.
Largely forgotten now but this song is a ripper especially with Phil Collins on the drums.

Agnetha released this single not long after Frida's successful song, it only reached no 76 on the charts here in Australia but made it inside the Billboard top 30 in the US. Great song though and i still have the vinyl single.

Have these two been forgiven for wearing Carlton vests in Abba the Movie?

Big Bikini Kill fan. Consequently bought more product from Kill Rock Stars by mail order through the 90s. Thereby discovering Sleater-Kinney, Elliot Smith, Unwound. Quite economical, buying direct from American independents, despite the cost of the bank cheque. US CDs were about half the price of the UK.

In a review of the Dinosaur Jr single "Freak Scene", I first encountered the term "Slacker".

Never heard this cover before. I knew Les Thugs had an album on Alternative Tentacles. Used to see it listed in the catalogue. They recorded a Peel session in the late 80s.

Metal Urbain are probably the most celebrated French Punks. Their second single was the first release on Rough Trade Records. Both "Paris Maquis" and "Panik" sound a bit like "J'ai Mal Aux Dents" by Krautrock innovators Faust.

Without doubt the best Continental European Punk band was Kleenex/Lilliput.

I absolutely adore Kate Bush. Like I said Hounds of Love is my alltime favourite album. It's one of those albums if I'm going to listen to I have to listen to the whole album from start to finish. It has such an amazing flow from one track to the next. Huge Madness fan too. Never got to see them but me and a couple of Rude Boy mates saw a Madness cover band in a small club and loudly sang along to every song.
Being from Bolton I guess you're a Wnaderers fan?

Love Bikini Kill but Sleater-Kinney is definitely my favourite of the 90s Girl bands.

It's from an album of Kennedys covers called Virus 100. Definitely worth tracking down there are some other awesome covers of classic DKs songs on it.

Infant Man Utd obsession. Bedroom covered in Red Devils merch. Started going to Burnden Park in 1976, occasionally then regularly. Fan of both clubs for a while. United allegiance gradually faded. Started going to Station Road in 1980. Fan of both games for a while. Soccer allegiance gradually faded.

Had a spell at Swinton sitting alongside a bloke who had emigrated to Sydney. Think he was temporarily back home due to a family illness. Possessed a strong Aussie accent, even though he'd only been out there for maybe a decade. That link and the 1982 Kangaroos tour sparked my interest in Australian RL. Subscription to Rugby League Week, Winfield Cup videos, etc.

I'm a Hammers man myself although I've taken up an interest in Tranmere since I found out they run out to the Rockford Files theme (my favourite show).

I was predisposed to like Sleater-Kinney. Had the Heavens to Betsy album and the two Excuse 17 albums.

Would rate the former, "Calculated" 6 out of 10. The Excuse 17 debut on Chainsaw Records is decidedly underwhelming, but the second "Such Friends Are Dangerous" on KRS is pretty solid.

Tranmere Rovers should run out to a tune by Half Man Half Biscuit.

The band famously declined a slot on The Tube lest the appearance clash with a Tranmere game when the club were staging home fixtures on Friday nights.
