I also don’t see the Gold Coast playing out of Burleigh while Burleigh are connected to Brisbane. Is the field up to broadcast standards?
Surely Burleigh go back to the Titans at some point soon. I think the Broncos tie-up was 3 years? It only really came about because the Titans wanted to enter their own team into the QCup and it was denied late, at which point they had to scramble (and why Ipswich feeds both them and the Chooks)

Just had a quick sqizz. This is from ACMA:

"Free-to-air TV

The Commercial television industry code of practice has rules about how much non-program matter (including ads) is allowed each hour. This is in section 5 of the code"

I havnt delved into this but might look at it later on. But it seems to have some restrictions and that was what my foggy memory post was about.

I had forgotten there are restrictions on the total minutes per hour of advertising, as this screenshot of part of the code link you provided (source (cause the staff always want one): https://www.acma.gov.au/node/1458) states -

1752032857912.png

That said, that particular section doesn't deal with advertising for gambling, alcoholic drinks, computer games and intimate services which are covered in separate section.

As such its the "amount of time" for advertising and not the number of ads which are restricted. Also note this part from the above section -

"On any day each Licensee may in each hour schedule on average no more than the following amounts..."

That "on average" is a key term. Manjy FTA stations knowing they have a high rating program, will cram is as many adds as possible during that program, and then to ensure it doesn't exceed that average, have less minutes in later hours after that program. its why many FTA programs that are supposed to start at 7.30 pm, 8.30 pm or even 9.30 pm wind up starting later than expected.

Nrl should be looking for ways to eliminate stoppages not have more of them

Dogs Penrith was such a good game had zero stoppages game was over in a fast time and was absorbing

We used to make fun of Union for their refs ruining games with penalties now we’ve gone down the same track with pedantic refs and bunker reviews

Once you go to the bunker defence resets and the game loses flow
Player dives on loose ball. Ref discerns hint of little bobble. Calls knock-on. Captain challenges. Enter the bunker.

I would prefer to put an end to knock-on derangement syndrome, but if the NRL want to persist with little bobble madness, viewers might as well be watching ads in lieu of bunker forensics.

In the UK, we never have commercials during RL games. Same applies to Soccer and Union.

You are a cooked unit, if you think the viewing public would rather watch an ad over an important decision in the game.

It's 2025, and the game isn't going back to the 60s for some old whinging Pom Boomer like you.

PS have a bath you soap dodger.

Also get it out of your skulls that one ad extra would suddenly result in more money after the TV deal is done.

My post argued in favour of fewer stoppages and ideally no commercials.

Someone needs to improve his comprehension skills.

Netflix, DAZN, Amazon: NRL launches multibillion-dollar TV rights negotiation under code of secrecy

NRL bosses Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo have flown to the United States for talks at the global headquarters of DAZN, Amazon and Netflix as they chase a multibillion-dollar long-term deal.

July 13, 2025 - 5:42PM

NRL bosses Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo have flown to the United States for TV broadcast deal talks with cashed-up American networks.

The pair left Australia on Friday under a code of secrecy for talks at the global headquarters of DAZN, Amazon and Netflix as they chase a multibillion-dollar long-term deal from 2027 onwards.

On Sunday we tracked down Abdo to get details of the meetings but he was reluctant to give anything away.
Via text he said: “In the U.S with PVL for a quick-fire wide range of meetings.”

He would not respond to further questions. V’landys did not return calls.

This masthead recently revealed the commercial tension that is building locally around the rights.

Nine Entertainment wants a lot more than the three free-to-air games they have under their current contract.

Peter V’landys and Andrew Abdo are in the US to negotiate on new TV rights deal.

The network is also bidding for six pay-per-view matches on its streaming service Stan once the NRL becomes an 18-team competition with Perth’s entry.

DAZN recently paid $3.4 billion to buy Foxtel and are going all out to keep the rights.

The NRL’s current TV deal is worth $2 billion, or $400 million over five years, that was signed at the height of the Covid pandemic.

Two years later the AFL came in over the top with a seven-year $4.5 billion agreement with Channel 7 and Foxtel.

The pressure is on V’landys and Abdo from the clubs and the RLPA to beat that given the NRL’s record breaking TV ratings for premiership and Origin football in recent years.

In May V’landys spoke to this masthead about his hopes for the new broadcast deal.

The return of the North Sydney Bears with Perth and Papua New Guinea’s entry in 2028 as the 19th team, positions the NRL perfectly.

“We have a much more valuable product now,” V’landys said, “I’m confident the hard work will pay off with a record deal.”

For international rights, Channel 9, Channel 7, DAZN and Amazon are all bidding for next year’s World Cup in Australia.

Would there be appeal in having a double header at the traditional grounds for those who have them?
ie Bulldogs NSw cup game and NRLW game on together on a Saturday or Sunday at Belmore?
I've been to the last two Pride games with the girls as the curtain raiser and I would say the crowds are better.

Pretty sure DAZN is headquartered in London, not the US, and I don’t know why they would need to meet the global executives when Delaney is still running Foxtel & would presumably be leading negotiations given his local knowledge.

I believe DAZN have a office in New York which is what I'm assuming Buzz is referring to.

Great journalism.

"The pair left Australia on Friday under a code of secrecy"
In other words buzz didnt know they were going until someone belatedly told him on Sunday over a late morning hangover sausage mcmuffin & hash brown.

"On Sunday we tracked down Abdo"
In other words buzz rang PVL & Abdos' mobile a number of times but it continuously diverted to voicemail until Abdo finally texted him to shut him up & told him nothing in the process. PVL was heard to mumble something about f%#k h*m.

Without anything else to go on the above formed the basis for this current story.

"The pressure is on V’landys and Abdo"
In other words this will form the basis for a future story with yet another hard hitting piece of journalism.
