What I find weird is that those complaining about their suburb being overtaken by a particular demographic - the same thing happened 50 - 70 years ago, when the Greeks, Italians and then more recently, the Lebanese came to our country and set up similar business's. Those people back then suffered from the same discrimination yet somehow are now perfectly accepted.
It was the same for the Vietnamese in the 70's, yet they don't even get a mention now.

Not really, broadly we need policies that encourage investment away from asset speculation and into more productive spaces like business.

But we really do need to stop doing things like subsidizing demand to compensate for increasing prices, because as we have seen for the last three to four decades, all it tends to do is push up prices higher again.

It's likely a case that if we simply stopped doing what we have been doing in the name of making housing more attainable, we'd end up with far more affordable housing over time.

Whilst that might well be true, where it is problematic is that the debate is more often than not being driven by a nationalist and racist agenda. So you end up with people repeating arguments that are based in racism because they believe them to be true, and that further drives "concern".

The hard nationalist right aren't smacking you about the head with a swastika, they're feeding you far more reasonable just right of mainstream stuff in the hope that when enough consume it it becomes mainstream, thus the overton window shifts, and that which once seemed extreme is maybe not so much any more.

We're probably two election cycles away from having a dressed up as something less sinister Nazi party.
