Beat the afl

Over a million is massive

Amazing ratings for the NRL. Having said that bulldogs/storm is pretty close to perfect from a ratings perspective and will likely be the highest rating game by some margin this week.

That’s a decent number for lions / suns

The league number is good too

The Union number is horrible

Looks like the afl will claw back some ground during the finals as usual

And you cant stop being a paranoid fool
What are your thoughts on the latest round of 'AFL taking over QLD' discussion on big footy? It's funny how they ignore all the handouts and legups needed for the Lions and Suns to survive. With the Bears coming in 2027 their continual neglecting of WA in exchange for pampering to QLD is going to bite them in the bum.

Said multiple times that the thread is full of zealots. The Suns and Lions are improving in some ways, but the AFL isnt taking over.

From a tracksuit survey earlier in the year - dominant code by region.

From the survey
  • In Victoria, AFL is embraced across both genders.
  • In Queensland, it’s different. Gender drives a noticeable split, with men significantly more likely to prefer Rugby League compared to the state average.
  • In Victoria, age plays a big role. The 55+ crowd are the key drivers of the AFL’s dominance. Meanwhile, younger Victorians (18–34) are significantly less likely to back AFL compared to the State average, showing stronger interest in UFC.
  • In New South Wales, 55+ Australians are still the most loyal to Rugby League. But younger Sydneysiders are branching out, leaning into UFC, NBA, and MLB.
  • Queensland, as usual, is the outlier. In the sunshine state, NRL is popular across all age groups.

Gotta take these surveys with a large helping of salt. I’ve always seen nsw as the most competitive sports state with the most wide spread support of various sports. Not only do we embrace nrl, also support afl well, but Sydney’s Aleague sides are doing better, significant support of womens sports across a variety of sport and then you look at alternate casual sports like oztag and water sports participation that are massive in New South Wales compared to other states.

This would be reflective in the above numbers where Victoria and South Australia are really all about AFL and parochial support of it. Whereas nsw and also qld people are generally sportier - more lilely to play sports and a wide variety of them than Victorians or South Australians. just have to look at the Olympic Games and see where the medalists come from usually - quite often is nsw or qld.

Victoria sports struggle a bit if they’re not AFL. Look at the collapse of the super rugby team and struggling a-league teams. Also Victoria doesn’t have anywhere near the varied mix of sports participation than nsw has.

Melbourne is an Afl town and do well at one off sports events like the Australian Open and Grand Prix but nsw and Sydney has the most successful and most competitive mix of national sport and sports participation than anywhere else in the country.

Hence if you’re in Victoria AFL is more than definitely your sport of choice. Whereas in nsw and qld it’s a wider variety as they’re more open to different sports.

You should take all surveys with a large helping of salt. While representative sampling is an accepted statistical practice, its not without its faults. The problem is sports guys use a variety of survey data for almost everything.

- OZtam is survey that determines tv ratings, based on 12,000 homes
- Ausplay is a survey that determines participation, based on 50-65,000 interviews.
- Roy Morgan support/tv viewing is a survey based on 50-65,000 intervews

Other surveys run by Bastian, Tracksuit, True North, Brand Finance and every other company springing up these days. Its all extrapolated numbers based in few enqiries, with little context applied. I mean how much details can you ask for when you call people in the middle of dinner, or pull them over for a chat in the middle of a Westfield

Really the only thing we dont use survey data from is the official and non unindependent data from the leagues themselves, attendance, memberships and finance.

No I get that.

just raw numbers don’t tell the whole story like above. NSW and qld are sportier states, more open to more sports, people more likely to support a wider variety of sport. Victoria’s and South Australians are parochially afl states both in viewership and participation. And this is definitely reflected in those survey results.
