On the off chance that anyone was wondering what the numbers say about the drawing power of away teams --

NRL 2025 away.png
Yes, there are many "yeah, but"s in this one (who's "away" in magic round for example), but that's the raw numbers.

Although I agree with what you say re: Ch7 or 10 wanting a night GF if they were to pick up the NRL FTA broadcasting rights in the future, how is it that even though there were two years during the COVID era (2020-21) where the AFL experimented with scheduling their Grand Final kickoff in primetime on the east coast of Australia (and unsurprisingly, Ch7 got large tv ratings), GF kickoff reverted back to the traditional 2:30pm Saturday afternoon start in 2022 (where it has remained since then)? Saturday night not so lucrative as Sunday night?

1. The COVID era AFL Grand Finals aren’t the highest rated AFL GF’s of all time.

2005, 2006, 2016 & 2024 all rated higher due to having more interest from Sydney & Brisbane (all feature Swans Grand Finals).

2. The viewing audience for the COVID Grand Finals are inflated due to the fact Victoria was under lockdown during both games AND the teams playing were Victorian, meaning fans of the clubs couldn’t get to the game. Basically anyone who is normally at a BBQ or a pub to watch the game was instead at home.

3. The 2020 & 2021 Grand Finals didn’t clash with NRL finals (same weekend as NRL Grand Final in 2020, the NRL prelim was an afternoon game in 2021). If there was cross code competition, it would impact the audience for both codes—- as there is cross over between the fan bases

This doesn’t make sense to me. Surely for big events you’re charged less on the timeslot and more for the product itself. If the game was played earlier and the ratings were the same why would the advertisers pay less?
Assuming all metrics were the same, then Nine could arguably command the same dollar value for ad spots for a 4pm GF as they do for a 8pm GF, the problem is they would need to take a cut in year one to prove to advertisers that it's still worth paying $100K+ per 30 second slot for each year after.

From an advertisers perspective, they know Sunday night is one of the premium TV slots, with the timeslot consistently drawing one of the larger aggregates of the week (Monday night is the only other TV slot that challenges it).

They also know an NRLGF on a Sunday night is a safe bet to get your brand in front of 3m+ people.

Sunday afternoon however is open to speculation. Firstly there is no recent data to prove the GF could perform as well in that timeslot as it does in a twilight or night time slot, secondly generally aggregate TV audiences are weaker then (it's a lot easier to convince someone already watching TV to change the channel, than to convince someone who's not to turn on the TV)

From an advertiser perspective, they'll be of the belief (rightly or wrongly) that most likely the NRL GF won't perform as strongly in the earlier timeslot, so will only be prepared to pay a lower rate which we all know Nine would never entertain.

Going to cross post from the International threads on the Pacific Champs/ seek advice from the experts here:

What’s the capacity of the bottom tier at Suncorp? Sales for Tonga v Samoa in Week 2 look pretty good? Most of the Eastern bottom tier sold out, Samoa area down to single seats. Would about 20,000 be a good guess?

This one is a good while away, but would be a significant result it could push into the high 30,000s

Sales in NZ for the Samoa match at Mt Smart are absolutely dire. The Western stand seems to not be on sale, and there is very very little movement in the Eastern or Southern.

Appreciate there is still a month to go, but tracking well below the 17,000 crowd they got in the 2017 World Cup at the same ground.

For comparison, NZ have played Tonga three times since 2019 at Mt Smart and got around the 20,000 - 23,000 mark.

Not even going to attempt how Wembley is looking for England v Australia.

The venues for the Ashes tests are so bloody varied with 90,000 for Wembley, 52,000 for Everton (sold out) and just under 20,000 for Leeds at Rhinos home ground ?.
Should had the opening match at St.James Park and the 3rd test at Headingley or even Wigan but the RFL are run by some odd ones.

eh? The 3rd test is at Headingly, did you mean Elland Road? Currently Elland rd is sht but is supposed to be getting a rebuild in the near future which would make it perfect for RL tests.
2nd test venue is perfect at 51k and a new stadium for fans to enjoy.
Wembley will probably hit around 55k.
All up around 125-130k which is outstanding and well above anything a three tests series in Australia could draw.

Bit of finals trivia. Assuming 81k or so this weekend, this will be the first year where each week of finals had combined crowds over 80k. Hopefully we don't get a rare sub-80k GF to blemish the set.

It's not that bad. There is still plenty of time left.

In saying that, I still think they should have played it at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and played the Leeds one at either Elland Road or Etihad Stadium in Manchester.
If they don't get 70k it will be a massive failure, especially when the last Ashes series was over 20 years ago

I'd be hoping if they get to 60/70k in sold tickets a few days out they can start doing giveaways at schools etc and really try to bump up the number

There's still a month till the game and advertising is finally starting to ramp up in London. 60K+ is very much in the mix still
Not 60k but should be over 70k, there's nothing worse then empty seats, looks absolutely horrible on TV. Or another option they should just giveaway tickets to schools in London to fill those empty seats
