It's pretty funny seeing the same people who don't want the Broncos or Maroons to play games at the new Olympic Stadium now want the Storm to move a prelim to Marvel.

They have an awesome purpose built stadium in AAMI Park. There is no need to create an inferior atmosphere so they can sell 10-15k more tickets.

Tell me about your experiences attending Marvel Stadium, mate.

If storm keep growing then they should take a prelim there

For now aami is the perfect size but if they could get an extra 24k in they would be mad not to do it

You’re talking about potentially 2 million dollars extra ticket revenue even if the ground costs more to hire
First of all that’s a big mother f**king if. Secondly we have no idea how much extra they would make without knowing more details. As you say how much does it cost to rent the stadium? Would the average ticket sell for as much? Would they make as much on the corporate tickets? Without knowing these things we really can’t be sure how much more money they would make.

I guess in a hypothetical world where you could 100% guarantee that the storm would sell out marvel every year I think you could make a case but even then I’m not sure I agree with the move.

Can say Ive been to both Marvel and Aami, and Of course Aami is a much better experience but expected in a boutique stadium.
That saying, should the NRL accept a 30,000 seat venue for a prelim?

25k should be the minimum for all finals games. Otherwise are you really forcing Newcastle, Canberra, North Queensland, Gold Coast, etc. to have to move venues?

So where does NQ play our prelims then?

What’s the criteria if say Newcastle or Gold Coast have to host a prelim? I swear I remember reading some bizarre rule they have to host at their nearest capital city, unless they scrapped that ages ago

NRL should enforce it at 40,000.
Might put pressure on grounds such as Newcastle to be upgraded or they need to treck down to Allianz.

Newcastle are allowed to host a prelim in Newcastle. The Gold Coast played their 1 and only home prelim at Suncorp and drew 43K.

2024 was above 80,000 and official capacity now is around 80,500 since they removed a stack of seats with that scoreboard.
So what, a few hundred individual seats didn't sell.
Hardly an embarrassment.
This is untrue.

The capacity was not reduced by the superscreen install - certainly not by over 2000 like you've claimed. 82,415 attended the 2022 GF which was post-install.

I agree that any 80k+ crowd is a great turnout given the relative size of NRL crowds regardless, but it is untrue to claim the stadium's capacity is somehow less right now.

Horses for courses best approach IMO. Canberra, NQ & Newcastle have no larger venues in those cities so 25-30k on the odd occasion they host one is fine. Temp seating & extra standing room should be definitely be looked at where possible to squeeze a few more in.

Melbourne, Perth & Auckland are a bit different as they have bigger options available, but the trade off is an Oval.

I’d say Warriors should definitely host any prelim at Eden Park, with the planned upgrades there it doesn’t actually look to bad for rectangular sports moving forward if it goes ahead, Warriors should definitely trial some games there in the meantime.

Hone prelims are a great advantage and clubs have earned them

Days of seeing cowboys v storm at sfs or Accor for a prelim were terrible and so insular

Someone else raised a good point about titans wonder if they have to play at Suncorp

Marvel would have at least double the corporate facilities compared AAMI. It they thought they could get 45k+ there they should do it. Reckon the Sharks game would have been 35k - 38k at Marvel.

By that same logic, should the Maroons or Broncos move games to the new Olympic Stadium which will have an extra 11k seats?

We will never get rectangular stadiums built or upgraded if teams are just happy to move key games to oval stadiums with a bigger capacity. The experience for the supporters should come first before how many people you can fit. The NFL know this really well.

No, it is true that seats were removed to install the superscreen, from memory down to about 83k.

Found the article with some pictures, the bays are missing around 5 or 6 rows where the screen is now.
