Australian Rugby League Commission chairman Peter V’landys has warned Nine Entertainment and Foxtel against teaming up to bid for the next broadcast rights, which he claims will be the biggest media deal in Australian sport.

The NRL is planning to formally commence broadcast negotiations once rugby league’s Ashes Test series in England concludes in November. V’landys said he would take the football code elsewhere if incumbent broadcasters Nine and Foxtel submitted a joint bid.
I don`t see this as a problem if it means we get the money we deserve. It maybe the only way we can get close to that $550m-600m mark. It would also reduce concerns about having the game spread out over too many providers.
I`d like to think that it`s the exploding social media engagement that would have the broadcasters salivating at the NRL rights, the trick is, and this is a problem that all broadcast companies are facing, is how do you integrate that in with your existing platforms.

A source close to Foxtel who wished to remain anonymous said the other day that maintaining NRL and Rugby League broadcast rights was critical to DAZN`s success in this country. Promising from their end at least.
Where did you get that or can’t say

I mean it’s obviously true and may explain why they want to cut the afl tv deal

Look I don`t save articles and I can`t remember exactly where but I remembered it because obviously I have an interest in this topic and it stood out.
If we don’t get at least 650 million across Australia and nz then Pvl will have done a bad job

He’s done all the leg work behind the scenes with expansion so he better not go mia for the most important bit

People familiar with Foxtel’s thinking but not authorised to speak publicly say the NRL remains critical to the long-term future of the service in Australia.

Why Ten needs Rugby League:

"10News+’s fate is indicative of the wider malaise at the network while it waits for the eyes of David Ellison, its new owner, to eventually turn to Australia.

"For some time, Ten has served its purpose as a promotional tool to help grow Paramount+ in Australia.

"But there’s a problem. To promote Paramount+, you need to have people watching Ten, and starting the night with 10News+ just doesn’t deliver audiences. News is supposed bring in audiences, who then stick around for a night of flashy shows, which in turn bring advertisers."

They want to grow Paramount + in Oz, 1 million Rugby League fans will ensure that.

I would love to see them go hard on pay tv money and look at a discount for C10 with conditions of great coverage (and maybe a % of the company if its worthwhile)
I read somewhere that Ten`s technology wasn`t up to it, by that I assumed they didn`t have the tech to broadcast the game that would be comparable to other broadcasters and of a standard desirable to the NRL.
If that could be fixed then League might just be the answer to Ten`s on-going relevancy problem.

I can’t see Foxtel losing the rights it would almost be the death knell for them. They will bid whatever it takes to get it - which is great news if 9 are serious about Stan getting the pay tv rights.

If I took a guess I’m imagining 9 retain FTA, Foxtel retain pay tv, 9 retain exclusive rights for origin and grand final, 10/paramount get Monday Night Football free to air and pay tv. Internationals … could be either 10 or 9.

This way the game is not supremely broken up on many channels - just Monday night football with 10 which adds some competition to 9. It strengthens nines position with the exclusives and have the same games as they do now. Allows nrl to maximise revenue without it detracting the customer experience of splitting the game up significantly.

Nine wont pay enough for exclusive origin / gf

Be shocked if Fox don’t get to simulcast them with nine

Wildcards are a shorter season length and Monday night football maybe returning

But they aren`t Foxtel anymore they are DAZN and they have heaps of other product to minimize subscriber loss if they don`t get the NRL. How many they would lose is the million dollar question. Sources have said that they see NRL as critical to their future in Oz.

I`d be far more concerned if I was Nine, they seem to be betting their future on streaming and are purchasing other products, EPL being a massive one, to broaden their subscriber base, perhaps to soften the blow if they lost NRL or weren`t prepared to pay what the NRL wants.

But it`s hard to figure Nine`s end-game with Stan any way, a global player? very hard to see how you can expect to make money via streaming concentrating only on the Australian market. There`d have to be a big shake-out, end up with an oligopoly type situation and prices would have to rise considerably.

Foxtel built a 3 billion valuation from the Australian market

The end game for Stan is potentially matching that valuation if they get the nrl and then build their network around it

They didn’t sign former Fox people to handle the negotiations for nothing

Youre possibly being very optimistic. $500-550mill cash avg from and nz is a realistic target And would see a 25% ish cash increase on current deal. That’s an ok result, anything over $550mill cash is an outstanding result.

550 million including contra then Pvl should stand down

Everything has moved in his favour from ratings up massively to Dazn coming into the market and Stan wanting to bid

That’s before you factor in expansion

I’m talking cash, contra is irrelevant.

600 million cash minimum.

Contra isn’t itrelevant when we’re talking tv deals since nobody talks what any other sport gets cash

What they got in the last deal isn’t relevant

It’s how much they outrate afl by and how much afl gets

Plus the market has improved since the afl did their deal

200 to 230 million extra tv cash will make a big difference to the salary cap and club grants too
