There has been absolutely no trend to this. TV ratings throughout the season has stayed relatively the same, then suddenly it exploded during the finals? While the TV rights are up for dicussion? While Vlandy's is looking to get more than the AFL for their deal? Historically, it makes no sense and i'm feeling there is some rigging going on here.

Far out they’re a dense bunch on Bigfooty

Im pretty sure the #NRL Grand Final is the highest rating program since the Womens World Cup. Smashed the AFL Grand Final this year - beating it for the first time since 2015.

While strictly not comparable due to VOZ system changes - I also believe this is the highest Grand Final rating for the NRL - or AFL - since the Oztam system change in 2001.

People outside the NRL really have spent the year understimating just how much more engaged the NRL fanbase is this year. Its been apparent since Vegas, carried through Magic Round and Origins and then capped off with a stellar finals series.
well said, I agree.
I think we all thought the GF would see an increase based on the year-to-date...but surely not as big as it was.

I think this paragraph from The Age article sums up the increase your last comment regarding engagement. I know I've seen the focus on stars and the 'personal investment in your team' in my feed and on telecasts Ive watched.

“Our passion for the game extends beyond the 80 minutes on the field. This season, we have invested more than ever in telling the stories at the heart of rugby league - profiling the incredible athletes, the dedicated coaches, and the passionate fans that make this sport what it is. By bringing these human stories to life across all our platforms, we are giving viewers a deeper connection to the game they love.”

I knew that something was up when I had a phone interview with Buzz Rothfield on Thursday morning, and in 30 minutes he had nothing negative to say about the league - and one of the questions was are there any negatives in league at the moment? lol.
