Sleeping giants

The game of soccer in this country is a sleeping giant.. they would have you believe
It will always be a sleeping giant. The junior numbers dwarf league and AFL. Issue is the standard at the professional level in Australia compared to rest of world which hampers the ability to convert junior numbers into going to the ground or watching A League on tv. If soccer was the same standard as say the EPL then soccer at the professional level would be right up there challenging league and AFL. The Super League has the same issue in the UK in that the best quality is in the NRL and it barely gets a look in due to how huge soccer is in the UK.

Similar to the US but I would say that major league soccer is far bigger in America than A-league is in Australia.

Football(soccer) in England is a behemoth that just seems to grow stronger and stronger every year!!

The argument you make about Australia is the same as it was when I was at school in the 1980s … the situation is likely not changing anytime soon ..

Even Rip Van Winkle only slept for 20:years I believe

My little Panthers are still a smallish club fan wise but will be huge in 20 years. Just like the Eels only period of success in the 80's is still paying off today.

Wests need to commit to Campbelltown

That's why I said it will always be a sleeping giant.

As you said the situation is likely not changing anytime soon. I would go further and say probably not in our lifetimes, if ever. There is simply not enough money at the professional level here for soccer to challenge league or AFL given money players can make in other countries.

If the giant is going to remain asleep a long time ..possibly for ever …then what does it matter? The true giants are the one’s awake and dominating

Is Penrith growing as a city/region?

your new stadium along with your insane junior numbers will almost guarantee you staying in and around the playoffs as well as top4 and playing in front of 20k+ crowds.

Yeah massively growing and the new airport will take it to another level.
Such a shame we didn't get a full new stadium and only an upgrade. The area is booming.

Dolphins are easily the sleeping giant of the NRL.

After three seasons in the NRL they are second to the Broncos in most metrics and 5th in attendances. They could easily be averaging 30k when they start making finals, they have a generational talent at halfback and a stadium (Suncorp) they can grow into and take advantage of a surge in popularity.

Problem with clubs like Dragons, Sharks, Manly to name a few, is their ground capacity. So it doesn't matter of their popularity surges if your crowds top out at 18k.

At risk of taking this thread off topic, soccer is mainly hampered by it's own supporters in this regard. I enjoy the A-league and its imperfections - I can comfortably watch a game, despite the quality not matching what we see in other leagues and love the fact I can go to a game at a decent time.

Unfortunately there are far too many Eurosnob soccer/football supporters in this country who idolize the EPL and nothing else.

Standard has nothing to do with it. The comps don t have the interest, money or appeal, level of quality has little part to play in it.
This is due to a complex algorithm of culture, history, class, geography or wealth.

Then why doesn't park level rugby league have the same interest as the NRL?

Dolphins are the same club but are drawing a heap more crowds, sponsors, etc because they are in the top tier.

While standard is not the sole reason, it is a big part than to say it has nothing to do with it.
