Ando's New Signings

Not many thought the Couchies would prosper like they have. Wow Toby and Ryan are seriously jumping leaps and bounds ! Small middles and making it happen. They are relentless and at the beginning of a many year NRL career !

not many thought Stewart would make it like he has - In fact there was serious long term forum contributions that rumoured he was only picked because of his dad !!!! You won’t get them to admit that despite being able to search back though comments and they said it explicitly!

Egan was harshly described as a so so by many forum contributors when playing ressies and or JF despite his fellow FG top30 players rating him to be a FG player for sure !

not many rated Halangahu in his early years. Thought he was ok two years back but not psyched as a top priority vs others.

many rated LPT as a crucial long term signing.

conversely Latu was talked about as a gun (including myself) I rated him as serious emerging FG player.

why did so many of us get it so wrong ? And then argue the hell out of what might be but rarely does ?

does that mean that this forum is way off the pace picking juniors?

I mean even the rage for LKT to be the next best thing? Or Glover and or Ilias ?

so I suppose where I am going is none of us championed KK to be our king of recruits. Now we do and we are stoked by his first two 2026 games being elite ! Bit of a left field signing I felt when I heard the rumour vs who we thought as might be the target !

so is there a player we have NOT considered highly, but could be contracted and achieve beyond all consideration and or impact if signed !
Jacob Webster. Tough. No nonsense. Flies under the radar a bit for mine.

Under the radar for mine is Hutcho, I know he’s pretty well liked in here but I can see him leapfrogging LPT this year (shoot me)
Webster and Hutchinson and even Dylan Coutts (injured in offseason) will be interesting forwards to keep applying pressure on the best 19. They have some upside for sure.

Seems like we grabbed Dylan Coutts for two years to potentially be that bench player that could give 30mins of very attacking footy.

ex 5/8 but shot up and now 195cm and 109kg / super dangerous in attack on the edge. Ando signing for the future ie till end of 2027

if Egan, Halangahu, Sua, Ryan Couchman, Coutts are fighting it out as starting edge backrowers will that that combo 5 edge surpass Luc by the end of 2026?

can we redirect some of that money towards a serious half or next FB ?

where does that leave Luc for 2027?

I mean we have gone long on Stewart and The Eagle till end 2029

no doubt navigating Halangahu and Luc right now re the future

we have signalled to Halangahu management we are going all the way with juniors ie Reed, Stewart, Dy Egan……..stay with us on this journey Jacob and most likely LPT also

I wouldn’t be surprised if we extend both Couchies soon to 2029

kk done for 5 years !

He's in good shape and good form. I'd give him a 1 year extension. Not sure on dollars but presumably a couple of hundred less than he was on. We can't release everyone, very hard to sign good players. If he keeps this form up there's plenty of others I'd let go before him.

I don’t think he is needed next year. On $700k and we have enough depth in the back row when you add Halangahu.. I also think Nick T very underrated and is worth a bet along with Egan.
need to retain SuA and invest in the backline. Personally I think Suli needs to offer more involvement, if only he could run lines like Val.. he would be unstoppable.

100% agree with re-signing Sua due to the unknowns of Halangahu and Nick T at the top level. Personally, and this is just my opinion, JH is better suited to the middle, he reminds me of Taumalolo . I think once the dead wood in Guler, Lawrie, Kerr and even Sele are gone we have the nucleus of a good pack. Ryan has already proven to be a better bench option than all of the aforementioned. Toby, KK and Stewart start in the middle, Egan and sua start on the edge, Egan shifts to 13 when Stewart needs a break, nick slots onto the edge when fatigue sets in. The other middles (JH, LPT) come in for that big body point of difference to Egan, Stewart, couchies who provide the work rate in the middle.

perhaps Kerr (I know he’s got another year)/sele re-signed as depth/cover if LPT doesn’t kick on. Then Webster and hutcho depth/up and comings to be excited about.

I think if we retain these, we won’t really need to go after any more forwards, everyone will be a year older and more experienced, Toby will be will be close to that 70 game mark.

we really need outside backs and another half, providing Reed isn’t ready. I’d personally stop chasing big name forwards and look for 1/2/5/7 options and a back up hooker for Liddle if we don’t re-sign cook

Transition to front row?
Interesting Coutts

he is on my radar and especially since Ando brought him over for two years

if Coutts defence can start to match his attack he will be most dangerous on the edge from the limited watching his game.

especially in the 6 interchange era

Our backrow journey is a fascinating one to watch next few years - I wonder also if Stewart in a few years may end up a prop?

Couchman R has probably popped up a level and for me he could take over that right side edge in 2028 if we can convince Sua to stay for 2027 with KK joining - Halangahu the other obvious one if Ryan is more considered a middle ?

got a think for 2028 Sua may want a big pay day at Perth or another club beyond what we are prepared to pay ? And considering his age for his next big contract.

2026 backrow ?
Luc, Sua
Stewart

Egan, Ryan Couchie, Halangahu, Coutts and maybe Egan will jump ahead mid season to start?

2027 backrow ?
Egan, Sua
Stewart

Luc?, Ryan Couchie, Halangahu, Coutts, NickT

2028 backrow ?
Egan, Halangahu (if Sua takes a big $ contract)
Stewart

Ryan Couchie, Halangahu, Coutts, Weatherall, NickT? Cyrus Stanley Traill?

Time for investment in our youth, get rid of all the so called experience and give youth and speed a go.
This team is built around aging veterans past their use by date.
I wish it was that easy

We can’t get past 2026 x 3 games as fans without a meltdown despite being competitive and each contest

imagine if Nick T, Reed, Webster, LPT were in our starting sides last few weeks ie super rugged teams of which two dominant teams fighting for top4

those young fellas would be cooked by end of round 3

I suspect the truth is we are promoting youth at a fast tracked level last 3 seasons already but success can’t come fast enough?
