The game should be marketed better. Regardless of how much we try and spin the crowds stuff it does look epic when you see AFL highlights on the news and they have a huge sold out ground and then it goes to a Rugby League story and the ground is lucky to be half full.

It is all about perception and the way the AFL aggressively pushes itself I am sure the majority would perceive they are a more successful sport. The highlights for the AFL always seems to come on first on the News, they are one foxsports 1, they get huge crowds.

Even if we beat them with TV numbers, it just isn't as noticable. I think League could easily compete with AFL, but we just don't seem to have that aggression that they do in marketing.

thats a good point - ANZ stadium with 8000 proabbly wouldnt have the atmosphere of the MCG with 90000. we have a good game - we need to market it. tho i dont know if we have the funds to do it as agressively as them.

this brings me to something else - im sure we'd get better crowds if we had something like the Telstra Dome - IN the cbd, great atmosphere, and specifically designed for our game! damn those bastards who made ANZ oval for afl!!!!!!

unfortunately that 52% of the population does NOT translate into numbers going to games or TV rights.

my point was that AFL is a more national game than NRL. i stick by that. they have teams everywhere, we have them mostly concentrated in two states. we have ONE team in an AFL area, soon they'll have 4 in our area.

hey no one watches the swans or lions in either of their states.

since those states comprise a majority of the australian population, its a massive failure really.

AFL got lucky with its TV deal last time.

when the next lot of deals reflect ratings, AFL will struggle with the reduced payments.

Origin with 78,000 at ANZ seemed fine.

much better than an empty MCG with no one watching the AFLs version of origin if you catch my drift.

A pretty good crowd, predominantly made up of Rabbitohs supporters, which is to be expected given their recent form. It's a shame the Tigers have been performing so badly and that a large contingent of our supporters take an exception to ANZ, because the match-up has the potential to draw 30k.

sydney has too many RL teams.

merkins

you're an idiot buddy.

Brisbane got 37,000 last week.

there are too many teams in sydney. If Sydney is the home of rugby league (which i do admit, it is) then they should be getting bigger crowds than brisbane. i dont think thats much of a blight on how passionate sydney is about league, its just the fact that sydney has way too many teams.

yeah 1 team in the city of brisbane is something we should be proud of eh?

the broncos should be getting 40,000 with no one else in the city and it being RL mad.

sydney crowds are growing, and probably faster than the broncos crowds are too.

when you start seeing clubs like the dogs or souths getting 30,000 to games regularly, it will show the broncos efforts as poor.

the point which youve missed is that if sydney clubs do market themselves properly, there is room for all in sydney.

you dont grow the sport by cutting clubs from areas.

we need more teams.

Pennywise, I'd be interested to know why you think 7 years ago the Broncos were only getting a 20k average crowd to ANZ, and why they now average 33k at Suncorp. Do you think it's because the Broncos have improved their marketing, or because Suncorp is a much better place to watch footy than ANZ was, and it's right in the city?

2 things if sydney clubs disappear:

1. we get a similar situation to when souths & norths left the game in the late 90's - supporters become disorientated with the game and the NRL loses supporters.

2. an afl/rugby/soccer club take up the void left by the NRL team and get another foot hold into the Sydney market. The other code takes up major sponsorship and picks up all the local fans i.e. central coast soccer team.

Usual sydney excuses for a sh*t crowd..

"it wasnt a sunday afternoon, we cant get to it if its a friday night game"

"the opposition was an out of sydney team"

"the weather was sh*thouse"

"its state of origin time, no-one goes to club games during that"

And the best you could do yesterday was 21k??? Pathetic. Pathetic.

Hang your heads in shame. sydney is no longer the heart of this sport. As soon as we dump 5 teams from that cold barren lifeless stinky sh*thole of a city the better.

Don't merged teams go well though? Most of the crowd were Tigers fans.

i dont think they do.

if merged teams go well for example, why is there so much bitching between wests and balmain fans.

ask the people of illawarra or norths / gosford if merges work well.

I was positive this was for the same two teams who were heavily criticised for playing at a small venue last year, which could only hold 19k or so....

last year it was more of a crunch match.

yesterday there werent as many tigers fans there as id hoped

That's bs, i was there.

Crowd was 60/40 at least in favour of souths. prob closer to 70/30.

Wests had lost four in a row and souths had won 5 in a row. And it was a souths home game.

Good atmosphere though.
