I don't understand French, please translate.
The NZ rugby league international SBW will not join Toulon, contrary to the announcement by the player's Australian club, Mourad Boudjellal, the president of Toulon declared by phone on Saturday.

"We have had contact with SBW for some time. He indicated to us that he wished to transfer from rugby league to rugby union, but it stopped there," confirmed Mr. Boudjellal from Miami.

Questioned on the assertions of the Australian club Canterbury, who have indicated on their site that the player has left Australia to join Toulon, Mr. Doudjellal indicated, "I cannot confirm that. I deny it."

will translate rest later

The bulldogs won't be able to do anything. He will play in France. Why would a french club pay any attention to what an australian court might say?

That's my question as well. With him over in France I'm not really sure what legal avenues are open to them.

Someone else mentioned the International court of Arbitration for Sport, I am quite interested to see how this plays out.

How can the Bulldogs enforce a contract on a player outside the country who is going to play a different sport? Is there an international court for arbitration in sport that would look at this case as I can't for the life of me see how the Bulldogs have any recourse over SBW as sh*tty as that sounds?

Contracts are typically respected across Western jurisdictions. All the dogs have to do is get an injunction in NSW and ask the french to observe it. Also, if Sonny Bill and the club in question ignore it, the Dogs can get a warrant served on him and get him extradited.

He specified that there was no recruitment to the club now and that the arrival of players would be announced "later."

The Australian press has announced that Williams, under contract with the Dogs till 2012, has left Australia without the consent of his club in order to travel to France to sign a contract for three years with Toulon.

"If Sonny tries to play overseas, we intend simply to demand an injunction which will prevent him from playing in France, England or any other country where he would try to do so," Todd Greenberg, the CEO of Canterbury has declared.

Williams, 22, is one of the most high profile players of Australian rugby league and has been selected 6 times in the NZ rugby league team. He would be on bad terms with his club, claiming a better salary.

The common law of australia (contracts) has nothing to do with contract law in france. don't think this wasn't investigated before he left.

for those in the know, this has been in preparation since May

Which means he really wants to see how this plays out. It may not suit his interests to honour the contract if the Bulldogs are successful in doing something, and thus he will play his cards later.

I think the Dogs should just save there money. It's just not worth the drama, it now means we have a little bit more money to grab some other decent players (maybe some that can play every game of the year)

He signed a contract that existed in australian common law.

He has now left. Forgone that contract and signed a seperate contract with a french ru club based on the laws of the european union.

I believe that this very situation would have been looked at by nasser's lawyers. and by accounts it has.

He's been acting like a spoilt brat all year & I for one am half glad he's thrown his toys out of the cot & racked off. There's part of me that thinks he's just not mentally stable right now & the only way to deal with everything is to run away - real brave of him & fantastic loyalty to a club that did everything for him & to his team-mates.

But that rant aside, He & Gaz would not have left league if their earning potential was not restricted the way it is currently. I agree with the salary cap but I can't for the life of me see why 3rd party endorsements are not allowed. Potential rorting of the salary cap?? - bollocks - their is a much bigger issue to fight. We are now missing out on seeing some of the games greats in their prime, and my personal opinion of SBW's tantrums aside, its an absolute travesty he's shot through. Even-ness of the competition I hear some say??? I see mediocrity. And I don't buy the agrument that someone else will step up & replace the SBW's, Gasnier's etc because in time they will also shoot through & follow the money....

The state of our game, the game I love & all of us love I'm sure, is really starting to scare me. Its been said that the NRL is full of athletes rather than footballers these days & I agree. With athletic ability these guys could succeed at many sports & so as a junior with so many sports to choose from what sport does a player pursue professionally??? It used to be League no question. Used to be.....

Contracts are still recognised internationally. Western Jurisdictions, regardless of their legal system, are extremely interested in the continued smooth running of commerce.
