Are the "Super League" war drums sounding?

All this year the press has been putting out all those... RL must change or die... players aren't getting what they are worth etc etc stories..

Players are leaving, even the word "strike" was briefly thrown out a few months back ...

Hysteria is consuming some..

Where will all this lead?

What's gonna happen?

I use the words "super league" in the thread title not because an exact copy of the SL war will erupt ... but because it is a symbol of massive upheaval in the Oz rugby league scene..

Is there a massive upheaval coming?

No......these are simply problems that people refuse to admit that Super League created. Just because it was "so long ago" doesn't mean, News Limited and their poor leadership in order to make a return on their investment hasn't had a negative effect on our game.

I reckon News/Super League are still hurting from the expenses, and are only in the game to try and recoup some of their money, now they got the desired prize (monopoly on payTV right, and the carrot for people to take it up).

I don't reckon the forces that were behind the first war are looking to start anything again, they just want out when the price/time is right, they have eyes for bigger things now. But the noises that are being made now tap onto one common denominator with those that propelled the Super League war in Australasia - human impatience and greed.

People in the game that want to see the code grow and develop and expand (nationally, again seeing the Super League war ruined the ARL's progress in expanasion and future plans) but in a sustainable, financially sensible way... as opposed to people in the game who seemingly will use any reason to put forward a case for finding money that doesn't yet exist and giving it to a certain selected type of people in the game, the dissatisfied elite, just to keep some people's egos happy, at the potnetial expense of the future of the code as a whole.

So yes, there's some parallels... and the upheaval will probably tear the game in two seperate camps again. :( All because for certain people $400K pa is not enough, despite playing with and next to guys who are on $50K?

It would take another media organisation to do so. Optus is dead in the water, 9 and fox are in bed with each other. There are no alternatives, and do we really want to see our game owned by another media outlet? I dont.

The game needs to go back to the ARL, only then will it be able to play media outlets off against one another. The chance of that happening however is pretty remote given all it would take is a few dollars in a few pockets to stop it.

After the SL war finished the NRL did a halfa*se effort of trying to fix the damage. Now the cracks are opening again. TBH I'm sick of News Ltd people telling Sydney clubs to merge/relocate or die. If they wanted to make it a national game they should have culled the NSW teams when the NRL was introduced instead of stringing them along and dumping them when they don't think it's profitable.
It makes me sick how the NRL flaunts the game's history and in the same breath destroys it.

I have heard quite the opposite! So far I have heard plenty of ARL folk talk about reducing Sydney teams and Gallop consistently state that the answer is not in culling teams. How do you get News are after culling teams or is it just paranoia against News as usual?

But who is going to bid for the right to images of 9 Sydney teams playing in front of small crowds?

The Superleague model was right, it just hurts you to say it.

If RL had got the pain over and done with 10 years ago it wouldn't be a French feeder 2nd tier comp it is now.

Watching teams going around in near identical jumpers with a big S on it as well as seeing Brisbane win every year and not seeing traditional derbies? No thanks. Although I do believe the game would've taken off in Upper Volta.

Well, Boy Genius, you tell me WHY it was the right way to go. I actually don't think you'd know sh!t from clay if you tasted it.
There was absolutely nothing wrong wrong with the game, it was going along very, very well, and then a media organisation wanted to take it all to satisfy their own greed.

He's right cause the game has to be rationalised in Sydney.

Sydney is nothing but a drain on Rugby League, a hairy wart on it's arse. It needs to be cut off. 7000 fans last night and 10000 at the Parra game doesn't cut it. Sydney teams are dying and they are taking league with them.

Fans are tired of hearing how Sydney clubs are doing it hard. If a dog is suffering, you blow the mother away, it's the only humane thing to do.

If a team has the whole of one city to call upon to pay it's players it will be able to retain them though higher payments, not this slave labour the NRL is running which is causing guys like Williams to leave.

If that means 12 teams and less professional players but all of them staying in league, so be it. A lot of professionals shouldn't even be dragging the rest down anyway.

I know you're p1ssed cause the Dragons haven't won sh1t in years, but look at the up side. You probably won't be around in 10 years to extend that winless streak anyway.

u seem to have popped up a lot with this super league propaganda.. how about you use some statistics to prove your point, instead of the hypothetical BS you have been pulling out...

Hmmm, pretty easy.

Sydney, 4.2 Million people, 9 clubs.

Brisbane, 1.8 Million people, 1 club.

Melbourne, 3.8 Million people, 1 club.

Adelaide , 1,1 Million, 0 clubs.

Perth , 1.5 Million , 0 clubs.

Damm, I wonder which city has too much saturation.

Do the math, report back.

I fully agree with you Rastus.

Melbourne, 3.8 Million people, 1 club, 14 supporters.
Adelaide, 1.1 Million, 0 clubs, 8 supporters.
Perth 1.5 Million, 9 supporters.

We implement your plan -> over run AFL and we will boost that support
to at least a 100.

Sydney, 4.1 million -> should drop nicely to about 100, 000 supporters.
brisbane -> who cares.
