A question...

When did the bulldogs sign his last contract...??

I would have no doubts they knew who Reni Maitua was at this point in time and still entered an agreement with him...

i think since the SBW drama, the Bulldogs have changed their persona a little. You can understand since then they would feel particularly peeved when Reni was absent. Without contact was he going to do a Sonny Bill? How do they know? Perhaps the Bulldogs signalled their intentions by telling the current players that such behaviour is going to be dealt with severely.

NRL to consider Maitua case

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2008/12/05/2439338.htm
National Rugby League (NRL) chief executive David Gallop says they are considering letting sacked Bulldogs forward Reni Maitua play for another club next year.

Maitua was released by the Bulldogs this week for repeated breaches of discipline.

The NRL initially said it would be unlikely to allow him to register for the 2009 season, after it emerged he may have been involved in a fight at a nightclub at the weekend.

But Mr Gallop says they are not in a position to rule Maitua out.

"I'm waiting to get a further report, a normal report about it. It certainly does indicate that there was an incident in a night club," he said.

"I think the next step is to get that formal report and then see if another club wants to try and sign Reni Maitua. If another club does then we'll look at it then."

Remorseful Reni Maitua will appeal his sacking by the Bulldogs

December 05, 2008 SACKED Bulldog Reni Maitua has apologised to the NRL club and its fans, but says he will appeal the decision to terminate his contract.

Maitua was dumped by the Bulldogs on Wednesday after missing a training session, the latest in a string of off-field indiscretions.

While doubts remain as to whether Maitua will be allowed to sign with another club ahead of the 2009 season, the former Kangaroo said he was disappointed in his own actions.

"I have certainly failed the fans of the club, my family and my friends but more importantly I have failed myself," Maitua said in a statement.

Maitua said his first task would be adjusting his lifestyle to ensure he can continue his career in first grade football.

"I will certainly be making every effort to restore an image that is somewhat tarnished, not to mention a career that I have damaged by virtue of my free-living spirit," he said.

"I must however accept that the spirit and way of life that I enjoy is not conducive to being a professional rugby league player in the modern game.

"I will adjust to continue my rugby league career."

Maitua said he would appeal the Bulldogs decision to terminate his contract, but said this didn't mean he was keen to remain at the club.

Maitua claimed he had tried twice to seek a release from the Bulldogs and been refused and he was confident an investigation into an alleged incident at a Sydney nightclub would find him innocent of any wrongdoing.

"I have had to live with the said allegations and innuendo for the past 48 hours and will continue to do so until the investigation is complete and my name is cleared," Maitua said.

Maitua's agent Sam Ayoub said a decision on where Maitua's future lay, including seeking a new club for the player, would not be made until after the investigation.

He has had a long history with us and it probably is the right time that he moves on cause he does have talent and probably needs a fresh start.

I dont think he should be de-registered cause what he has done was not a serious breach but rather a string of incidents. If another club is willing to give hm a chance then they will deal with any potential consequences, goodluck to Reni., his heart was not with us.

Hypocracy...? Reni's no angel and wasn't he allegedly involved in a pub brawl on Sunday night, precious? Excessive alcohol consumption seems to be the common thread amongst these wayward players... Carney, Bird etc.

North Queensland Cowboys sit on Maitua decision

December 6th, 2008

RENI Maitua may be set to escape de-registration from the NRL but the Cowboys will not be making any rash plays for the troubled forward until the investigation surrounding his sacking is complete.

A remorseful Maitua fronted southern media yesterday and apologised for his no-show at Monday morning's training session after it was alleged he had been involved in a scuffle in a Sydney nightspot over the weekend. And NRL chief executive David Gallop said he had received new evidence that suggested Maitua had not been in the wrong on this occasion.

"It appears Reni was not the instigator," Gallop said.

"The next step for the NRL is to wait and see if another club wishes to sign him and what to do if he does move on."

But with the investigation to continue and Maitua set to appeal his sacking from the Bulldogs, Cowboys chief executive Peter Parr said the club would wait for the final outcome before making a decision on offering him a contract.

"We haven't really discussed it at any great length," he said.

"Obviously a lot more needs to be worked out with NRL and the Bulldogs, particularly with the NRL about getting to the bottom of what actually happened and what the status of him being de-registered is. We've taken a back seat at the moment and are allowing them to work on those areas before we work out whether he is worth pursuing."

Maitua delivered an apology to both the Bulldogs and his fans but vowed to clear his name of any wrongdoing prior to missing Monday's training session. He will appeal his sacking but has no desire to remain a Bulldog after he previously tried to gain a release on two occasions – at least once to attempt to join the Cowboys – but was denied.

"As far as the Bulldogs' decision to terminate my contract is concerned, I wish to advise that I have, through my manager, indicated that I will be appealing that decision," he said.

"This does not mean that I have an intention of remaining with the Bulldogs, particularly given that I have recently and on two occasions sought a release from the club but (been) refused."

But he did admit his partyboy ways had cost him his job in the long run after a string of alcohol-related misdemeanors at the club.

And he said he would be looking to remedy that as he searches for new home in the NRL.

"I will certainly be making every effort to restore an image that is somewhat tarnished, not to mention a career that I have damaged by virtue of my free-living spirit," he said. "I must however accept that the spirit and way of life that I enjoy is not conducive to being a professional rugby league player in the modern game.

"I will adjust – to continue my rugby league career."

Sheens is a real fan of Reni and he is the sort of player our Teflon Tim loves, backrower, over the hill and over rated. Dont be suprised if Teflon makes a play for him to fill the vacant no25 on the playing roster

That would depend on his willingness to accept being made into a prop... Shines needs a replacement for Bronson Harrison, you know, that bloke who when restored to his proper position played outstandingly in the World Cup of all things.

SACKED player Reni Maitua has threatened legal action against the Bulldogs unless they hand him a hefty $100,000 payout.
Maitua - sacked by the club on December 3 after another off-field misdemeanour - is angry that few NRL clubs, if any, have enough money left under the salary cap to sign him.
The utility star may play the 2009 season for as little as $50,000.
His manager Sam Ayoub spoke with Bulldogs chief executive Todd Greenberg about the issue yesterday.
A firm Greenberg though said the club would be extremely reluctant to give the axed Maitua any payout.
Maitua claimed he would be prepared to take a pay cut and feels $100,000 would be a reasonable figure.
"I had discussions with Todd Greenberg in relation to the current predicament Reni finds himself in," Ayoub told The Daily Telegraph last night.
"It (a payout) is something we would pursue with the club to avoid potential legal proceedings.
"Todd said he needed to talk to some people at the club and would then come back to me.
"Todd has been good through this process and we hope that this is resolved as soon as possible.
"We're not trying to do anything wrong here."
North Queensland and Souths are two clubs interested in signing Maitua but both have salary caps issues.
Asked was a payout likely or unlikely, Greenberg said: "Unlikely."
Then told court action was a possibility, he said: "We would look to avoid any issue with lawyers. It doesn't help either party."
Greenberg said Maitua still had the right to appeal the decision.
But the Bulldogs privately claim they would not reinstate Maitua.
"We talked (yesterday) about whether Reni was going to use his appeal and he and Sam are still considering that," Greenberg said.
"In my view, Reni's contract was terminated because of constant breaches to the code of conduct."

The Cowpats are out of the race.

Meanwhile, North Queensland chief executive Peter Parr said last night the Cowboys would not be pursuing sacked Bulldogs utility Reni Maitua. "There is no way we could make a competitive offer, with the salary cap strain we are under," Parr said.
And at a meeting yesterday, the NRL board rubber-stamped the introduction of two referees to control games next season. The move had been recommended by last month's annual chief executives' conference.
"Today's decision is a fundamental change to the refereeing model and one that reflects the pace and demands of today's game," NRL chief executive David Gallop said yesterday.

Based on his '08 form $50k is a fair price IMO. No doubt he can play, but you don't get the big bucks by being a lazy pr!ck when your supposed to be a senior player.

What is he thinking? He got sacked for multiple breaches of the clubs code of conduct which is tied into his contract.

I should miss a few days of work so I can get the sack too and get a nice payout.

He's always been an arrogant prick who thinks he's better than he really is due to kickin it with Mason and SBW.

He's knob cheese.
