RABBITOHS 52 DEFEAT ROOSTERS 12
15 Mar 2009
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have destroyed the Sydney Roosters in the first leg of the Ron Coote Cup for 2009, running away with a 52 points to 12 victory at the Sydney Football Stadium in front of 24,486 fans.
The Rabbitohs ran in nine tries to two in an absolutely dominant performance, with Chris Sandow and John Sutton starring for the men in cardinal red and myrtle green.
The Rabbitohs blew the Roosters away in the opening 40 minutes, scoring five tries to one, including a double to noted try scorer Nathan Merritt.
The Rabbitohs opened the scoring in the sixth minute of play when new recruit Colin Best crossed on the left hand side of the field. Best beat Anthony Minichiello, Mitchell Pearce and Sia Soliola to score out wide. Sandows conversion gave Souths a six-nil lead.
Braith Anasta kicked off and put the ball dead on the full, giving the Rabbitohs another attacking opportunity. They took it with both hands, Merritt scoring his first try one minute later. John Sutton took the ball to the line and held up three defenders before offloading to Merritt on the right wing to score. Sandow converted from the sideline to give the Rabbitohs a 12-nil lead.
The Roosters struck back in the 18th minute when Braith Anasta scored a messy try. Craig Fitzgibbon kicked his 1500th career point to bring the home side within six points of the good guys.
Five minutes later, Rhys Wesser scored his first competition try in the red and green. Sandow grubber kicked through the line and followed it through, but clashed with a Roosters defender. The ball popped up for Wesser who scored. Sandow kicked his third conversion to restore the Rabbitohs 12-point lead.
Three minutes later the video referee awarded the Rabbitohs a try to winger Fetuli Talanoa. It was John Sutton again who set up the play, this time on the left hand side of the field, chip kicking across field for Talanoa to leap and score in the corner. Sandow kicked his fourth conversion to give the Rabbitohs a 24-6 lead.
In the 36th minute of play, Nathan Merritt scored his second try of the half when he took an intercept off Anasta close to his own line, and raced 98 metres to score.
In the final minute of play, Sandow kicked a penalty goal after Mitch Aubusson took Jamie Simpson in a high tackle, giving the Rabbitohs a 30-6 half time lead.
The Rabbitohs set up their attacking opportunities through the forwards, with Luke Stuart, Roy Asotasi, Shannan McPherson and David Faalogo all making metres. Sandow was controlling the side well, and Sutton, Best and Wesser all looked dangerous with their hands on the ball.
The Rabbitohs started the second half on fire, with Merritt crossing for his third try in the 45th minute. John Sutton put in a long cross-field bomb to Merritts right wing, where he out-leapt Shaun Kenny-Dowall to score.
The Roosters scored their second try in the 59th minute when Jake Friend dived over from dummy half to score. Fitzgibbon converted, reducing the deficit to 22 points.
The Rabbitohs struck straight back, marching up field from a Roosters turnover. The ball went to Sutton again, who held up the defence, offloaded to Wesser who threw a long pass to Fetuli Talanoa on the left wing to score his second. Issac Luke converted from the touchline to bring up 40 points for the red and greens.
The Rabbitohs scored again in the 66th minute when South Sydney junior Eddy Pettybourne crashed over on the left hand side. A short ball from Luke gave Pettybourne the opportunity to score. Luke converted the try to extend the Rabbitohs lead to 34 points with 12 minutes left on the clock.
A little bit of Chris Sandow magic brought the Rabbitohs crowd to its feet in the 71st minute, when he chip-kicked for himself, regathering and scoring next to the uprights. Issac Luke converted to take the Rabbitohs out to a 52-12 lead.
The Rabbitohs were completely dominant in their performance. Every time they had the ball in Roosters territory they looked dangerous. The halves combination of Sandow and Sutton was outstanding, with the Rabbitohs forward pack setting up the opportunities by making metres anywhere on the field.
The Rabbitohs move on to play the Parramatta Eels next Friday 20 March at ANZ Stadium.

A great effort, first time time since 1952 that we have put over fifty on em.
Also to defeat the Rorters by such a huge margin in under 20's is a major achievment. They over the last 10 years have been real strong in the lower grades.
