Why wouldn't Sydney FC play a few games at Toyota, the Sutherland Shire is one of the biggest breading grounds for Soccer in NSW.

<H2 id=story>Sydney FC help Sharks by playing trial at Toyota Stadium
By James Phelps
May 23, 2009 Sydney FC has emerged as a shock saviour for besieged Cronulla, with the A-League glamour club to play a trial at Toyota Stadium next month which is expected to net the Sharks a desperately needed $50,000.
And in a further bid to generate more income from the fully owned facility, the Sharks are looking at organising two dance concerts and an outdoor boxing promotion for later this year.
With $700,000 major sponsor LG pulling out in the wake of Reni Maitua's positive drug test, the Sharks need money fast to avoid sinking beneath a $9 million bank debt.
Toyota Stadium is a major feature in the club's survival plan, which will be unveiled in full when NRL boss David Gallop meets the entire board on Monday.
Sharks CEO Tony Zappia hopes the June 27 Sydney FC-North Queensland Fury football fixture will attract 10,000 fans, given it will be former Liverpool star Robbie Fowler's debut on Australian soil.
"We think there will be some traction in playing a meaningful game here," Sydney FC general manager David Mason said.
"When we saw the pre-season draw we thought we would take the North Queensland match to Sutherland following a successful trial match at Seymour Shaw Oval last year.
"Sutherland is the biggest football association in Australia so we thought what a great place to bring a Sydney FC game.
"Toyota Park is the best ground in the area so we have been talking to the Sharks."
Sydney FC have a long term deal with the SFS but the move could see more soccer come to the Sutherland Shire.
"I am not sure if we will bring more games here," Mason said
"It isn't an A-League match but it is a good opportunity to see what sort of reaction we get."
After one of the toughest weeks of his career, Zappia admitted the Sharks would have to think "outside the square" as they fight for survival.

as for the boxing and dance concerts ...der about time.

In summer they could be doing stuff in there once a month or more.
Someone said markets...great idea ...a fresh food market.
How about "A day on the green" type of thing .

What do these blokes running the joint do all summer?

If the Soccer game gets a big crowd which it should. They MIGHT think about playing some more games there i'd guess. Might be worth going down for it.

Agreed, why the hell has it taken them this long to host other events at Shark Park?

This is old news but good news. If the 50k is correct then thats better than i expected. I wonder if it was Sydney fc or us that started the ball rolling on this one?

Either way if they can promote this in the right places and really push the fact that Robbie Fowler will be playing i can see more than 10k turning up.

um...excuse my ignorance but who is Robbie Folwer?

One of the great strikers from the EPL in the 1990s - early 00s. Freak of a player.

This game will guarantee pull a crowd from abroad, let alone the Shire. There are heaps of Liverpool supporters in Sydney and they won't pass up the opportunity to see one of the game's greats playing in Sydney.

Epl legend, his Liverpool fans nicknamed him god. Easily the highest profile player to come play in the a-league. He is a guaranteed crowd puller if its marketed right. Especially with how big soccer is in the shire.

LOL @ Legend, hes an overpaid prat. but he will draw the crowds, he is a bit like beckham, way overpaid but the crowd all want him for some bizzare reasons unknown to me.

Long-term doesn't anyone think this may draw people away from the Sharks?
The shire has the biggest junior soccer base...a ploy to get them away from rugby league?

As for the fights....Ryan Waters vs Talipeau a possibility? They would get a fair few to that bout for sure

There'll be no shortage of local punters wanting to see Talipeau have his teeth knocked out.

1. If they play at Toyota Stadium, then we profit form stadium hire and traffic through the Leagues Club (and in the long-term patronage for the development shops etc)

2. The A-League plays in summer.

He is a legend of the epl, no doubt, constantly voted in top 10 lists for best players in the premiership history. Who isnt overpaid over there? Fowler earnt his rep as a goal scoring machine not as a pretty boy advertisers dream. He fell away when he left liverpool but his legend status was already confirmed by then.

Dont think so. Its always been the same in the shire. There is so many kids playing soccer, yet you will find most of these kids are rugby league fans. Sydney fc might be slowly gaining new fans but i cant see it affecting the sharks at all.

Isn't the frontman of the Hoodoo Guru's a Cronulla fan, surely they could do or help attract some talent for concerts.

I thought I read somewhere in the last couple of weeks the Wollongong bid for an A-League team planned on playing half its games at WIN Stadium and then splitting the rest between Toyota Stadium and Parramatta...

I've googled it, but can't find a source, sorry...

He's not a prat at all. The Liverpool fans themselves (fair judges of talent I would say) voted him in their top 3 players of all time to play for the Reds.

Maybe we could have some sort of alliance with Sydney FC to get our members into their games and vice versa at discounted rates.
