NRL Rookies 2010

We all love a glimpse into the future which is why as fans we love to discuss the young prospects at each club. Last year much was made about the debuts of Dugan, Locke and Mortimer and this year could be no different as a number of young (or in rare cases, old) prospects step up into the toughest competition in Australia, the NRL.

This thread is designed to recognise these rookies and educate the LU community on these players and what they bring to the table.

Tomorrow this thread will be filled with all the names of potential debutants. In the mean, I'd like to highlight the names of those who debuted last year but still qualify as Dally M Rookie of the Year candidates.

Last year there was a lot of confusion, especially when Idris took it out despite appearing in three run-on performances, a fact that would've seen him disqualified in previous years. The rules according to Rugby League Annual 2009 edition states that any player that played less than 4 first grade performances is eligible for the award later in the year. So without further ado, the nominees for 2010.

Clark should play a fair amount of grade this year for Souths.
Vaivai may get a shot in the centres too.

The real players to watch are Kane Morgan and Dylan Farrell.
Both have been training with the NRL squad and are both still eligble for 20s ( with Farrell still only 18 ).

Farrell is a centre and Morgan a winger.
Morgan is out for 10 or so weeks at this stage.

Did Jesse play last year?

The WCC doesn't count as an NRL fixture.

Was on the verge a couple of times but did not play.

Along with Jesse I think you'll see these players make their debut at some stage.

Gareth Widdop
Matt Duffie
Louie Fanene
Rory Kostjasyn

......maybe Dane Chisholm, Luke Kelly and Justin O'Neill.

As far as the Raiders are concerned, Drury Low and Sam Mataora are big chances. Not sure who else is on the radar, maybe Dan Joyce.

My vote would also have to go to Big Jesse. Early days still but with his big frame in the Storm team I'm expecting a ton of off loads to Slater and a high work rate working alongside Cameron Smith & Cronk/Finch.

I have no doubt he'll go onto play.

But my list is made up of debutants from last season who still qualify as rookies for 2010. Like I wrote many fans were confused with the system last year and I wanted to do my best by listing those who qualified without this thread being inundated with questions on "does such and such qualify".

Don't get me wrong, I believe there are some Storm players that will feature quite highly in these discussions of Rookie of the Year.

Jarrad Kennedy maybe? Cy Lasscock? Mick Picker?

Although I think things would be pretty desperate with injuries and/or form for these guys to get a run.

Stand outs from Round 1?

As a Broncos fan it may seem obvious to say Corey Norman who came up with a number of big plays but for me, Matt Gillett really impressed me. Not only did he do his job, he was one of the stand out players and rightfully earned the players player for his performance.

Bromwich and Guerra also made fine debuts.

Junior Vaivai is playing first grade this week - it will be his 1st game this year and his 4th in total as he played the last 3 games last year.
