Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

We are not America...these muppets have no idea.

Umm... it's actually an Australian innovation.

I agree that it's not really the issue that needs adressing right now.

I do like the concept in other sports, retiring a jersey number is a huge sign of respect.
Didn't they briefly retire Terry Lamb's number 6 for the bulldogs in the Super League era?

I hate watching super league and seeing blokes wearing ridiculous numbers that in no way shape or form correlate to their position. At least, unless there's an injury, if a bloke wears 1 in the NRL I can assume he's playing fullback.

Couldn't agree more!

They also voted that a large S should be printed on the front of all jerseys to indicate a salary cap compliant team...

great idea dude, why don't we let the players vote for a cool new nick names for the teams they play for as well.

Personally I don't give a stuff whether it happens or not. But it would be good for marketing as kids can go around wearing a jersey with a number associated with a particular player from their side. Eg. A young kid wearing a jersey with 11 on the back means they're a Hindmarsh fasn etc. The backlash to this suggestion seems a bit over the top to be honest. I reckon it's an idea worth considering if done the right way as clubs are trying to build membership bases and having the players a large part of that. I don't care either way, but such an idea shouldn't be dismissed without merit when you consider the marketabilty factor.

Can they have bikie patches on the back of jerseys? They can personalise their own jersey, so then fans will buy the patches to do the same as their favourite player.

This is off topic but the league need to be strict about sponsorship placement on jersey's. They definitely need to have the names on the back of the jersey to personalize the strip. Imagine the pride of receiving your first, first grade jumper with your name on the back of it, you would most certainly frame it.

I'm disappointed this has been reported to come out of such a high profile meeting, instead of really trying to find a equal solution they have basically gone off topic and talked about changing something that works in our sport.

How are these guys leaders of the game.

Do they really think that players choosing their number will make more people buy the jerseys?
Then again maybe they do. These are the same " Marketing gurus " who think that playing in different strips that don't resemble your clubs colours will sell more jerseys as well.
On another angle, shouldn't players have to earn the right to wear a particular number and follow on from the greats of the past who have worn that number or played in that position. eg think of all the great halfbacks we have had wear the number 7 and now Cooper Cronk follows on from them.

So if he Eels used there player numbers, instead of running out as
1. Jarryd Hayne
2. Luke Burt
3. Joel Reddy
4. Timana Tahu
5. Krisnan Inu
6. Kris Keating
7. Daniel Mortimer
8. Nathan Cayless
9. Jeff Robson
10. Fuifui Moimoi
11. Nathan Hindmarsh
12. Ben Smith
13. Feleti Mateo
14. Matt Keating
15. Tim Mannah
16. Justin Horo
17. Justin Poore

it would be
690. Jarryd Hayne
602. Luke Burt
683. Joel Reddy
679. Timana Tahu
695. Krisnan Inu
702. Kris Keating
710. Daniel Mortimer
585. Nathan Cayless
706. Jeff Robson
665. Fuifui Moimoi
595. Nathan Hindmarsh
674. Ben Smith
673. Feleti Mateo
700. Matthew Keating
705. Tim Mannah
715. Justin Horo
714. Justin Poore

It would make it hard to win the footy doubles

Section 4, Rule 3:

Number and Naming of Players
For ease of identification, players’ clothing must bear the numbers 1 to 13 with additional numbers for the substitutes. The numbers relate to the positions of the players in their respective teams, these positions being referred to by name and number as set out hereunder.

(1) Full Back
(2) Right Wing Threequarter
(3) Right Centre Threequarter
(4) Left Centre Threequarter
(5) Left Wing Threequarter
(6) Stand-off Half or Five-eighth
(7) Scrum Half
(8) Prop
(9) Hooker
(10) Front Row Forward
(11) Second Row Forward
(12) Second Row Forward
(13) Lock Forward

Not that the NRL care for the Laws of the Game, but here it is.

Yep. These guys could teach public servants a thing or two. And who was the genius who decided to appoint the CEO's of Easts and the Broncos to the salary cap steering committee?
Talk about agendas:lol:
You got something you'd like to share?

They also voted that a large S should be printed on the front of all jerseys to indicate a salary cap compliant team...
 problem solved.

I don't see what would be wrong with it, and it would be massively marketable.
Don't really get the outrage here...

What an interesting concept having a player wearing the same number all the time.

Congratulations NRL, welcome to the 21st century.

Would be a nice idea for everyone to put their skirting aside - some of you are carrying on like they didn't discuss the salary cap. Grow up.

Yeah its all to do with marketing, Yeah i bet 23 would be the most popular for sure.

No wonder it took these dipsh#ts 5 years to bust the Storm, have a meeting on salary cap and talk about changing numbers on playing jerseys FFS.
:? WTF have club CEO's got to do with busting the Storm? I think you've got your wires crossed.
The Storm had the best system in 1998 to 1999 - personalised jerseys with standard numbering. Team were named on Tuesday from 1 to 17, the number was given depending on position. Matt Geyer played on the wing, his jersey had Geyer 2. If he was named to play five eighth the next week, he was given Geyer 6.

That system allowed more marketing opportunities than any other, yet stayed true to the traditional numbering system.
Get rid of the top sponsor on the back of the jersey and just bring back names on jerseys. Problem f**kin' solved.
Agree with these. Remove the back top sponsor and add player names on every jersey. They often have to make new jerseys throughout the season anyway...
Not that the NRL care for the Laws of the Game, but here it is.
The whole discussion alludes to the fact they might change that - are you stupid?

I can't believe how much some people are freaking out over this. It's numbers on the back of a shirt, who cares?

I think people are blowing up because they were supposed to be fixing one of the biggest issues in our game. And instead clearly didn't have the ability to handle their task so picked a completely unnecessary issue to deal with.

Absolute clowns.
