CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

I think people are blowing up because they were supposed to be fixing one of the biggest issues in our game. And instead clearly didn't have the ability to handle their task so picked a completely unnecessary issue to deal with.

Absolute clowns.
Buy a clue and quite being a drama queen. They discussed the salary cap at length, which has been well accounted.

Why there's suddenly a moratorium on discussing anything else at a CEO's meeting is beyond me.

Big massive gigantic waste of the meeting, however I can see the merit of it.

Chicago Bulls 23.

Not that I think anyone in the NRL can match the calibre, but you get the drift.

My favorite jersey was 33 Charlotte Hornets. I was at least half his size, but Alonzo Mourning was the sh*t. Anything with 33 on it was awesome (even parking tickets, not that I was old enough to drive).

I have no issue with it. Worth exploring? Yes. Didn't work for Super League.

For F%#ks sake though, what the hell is wrong with the people running (or ruining) OUR game! The sooner independant commision is implemented the better. We have the AFL currently throwing (what seems like) buckets of cash promoting their diabolical game in Sydney and Gold Coast; yet their seems to be alot of concern over the long-term viability of the Melbourne Storm?

This sh#t makes me so damn angry!!!!

What if the decision to ditch the numbering in favour of player selected numbers was to increase revenue, and in the wake of increased revenues, the salary cap is increased.

Let's face it, the clubs are broke as fguck and a few extra dollars would be the first step in increasing the cap for a starters.

Sorry if this has been mentioned.

I got an Alonzo Mourning Heat jersey #33. I hope this idea gets off the ground it's great to see a jersey with a number and immediately know who it is

I don't see what would be wrong with it, and it would be massively marketable.
Don't really get the outrage here...

All for the idea of personal numbers but in comedy timing is everything and the Monty Python gang couldnt have timed it any better.

Names on the jerseys would be equally marketable without being a radical change. Players wouldn't even need to have their names on their backs in games. A completely nothing idea.

I've got roughly 9 basketball jerseys that I've accumulated over the years. They probably cost maybe 7-900 dollars all up. Of those, only one represents a player on the team I actually support. The rest are just players from other teams I like. That is the advantage of this sort of idea. If the backs of those basketball jerseys were blank, I would own 1 jersey and that would be the one representing the team I support because it'd make no sense to buy one for an opposition team.

I understand this isn't some huge pressing concern and it seems odd that this came out of a CEO gathering, but there are merits to the idea. A lot of things didn't work in Super League, that is hardly a valid excuse to use in this case.

Or they could use a squad number system like in soccer. Players are assigned numbers based on their position but no matter where they move during the season position wise they stick with that number. I guess it's the same sort of thing but keeps the traditional position/number concept going.

I think we're a little more tribal than that. I'm a Broncs supporter but JT's my favourite player. I still couldn't see myself wearing a Cowboys shirt, simply because it has JT's number on it.

When Super League tried it in 1997 about 4/5 of the players kept their usual position number as their jersey number. It wasn't accepted by most players, and the general public thought it was stupid. There's a reason why it was ditched for 1998.

I bought a New York Jets jersey with Jones #20 on it.

Brand new home jersey

Off season happens and Mr Jones is traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and LaDanian Tomlinson rolls into New York

So my brand new jersey is now out of date

I either walk around with a jersey with a players name on that plays for an opposition team or I stump up for a new jersey

Or I change my name by deed poll to Jones and pretend I meant to do that.

If players play for a club for life, what better way to show your support for your favourite player. But most dont and next season you'll be wearing the jersey of someone who plays for the opposition. In a small league like ours, that's more likely than the NFL where players get traded to teams you face once every 16 years. So why risk the purchase?

I would rather the clubs released jerseys WE ACTUALLY WANT TO WEAR, rather than the garbage we get served up. That would drastically increase jersey sales. We dont buy jerseys for a player, we buy them for a team. If that jersey is crap, we wont buy it.

You only have to read the jersey & colours thread to know that.

Oh and comparing the NRL to NFL and Premier League  Manchester United are a clothing company with a sporting team attached to it. Look at the range of stuff you can buy from that team and they have a fan base of 7,000,000 people in the UK alone and 300,000,000 in China probably. So of course 1% of people buying still means sh*t loads of sales.

A team with 80,000 fans means each one has to sell each person about 20 jerseys to get on par. Economies of scale gentlemen.

Make the right jerseys and listen to what people ACTUALLY WANT and you'll sell a truck load. Just look at the Dogs and their hooped traditional jerseys and how many of those sold. That's what people want.

Not an exact replica of a 30 year old jersey, but a modern, close approximation of that old jersey. Without making it look like some shiny advertising hoarding.

Lambretta, beautifully said mate.

I have bought more Tampa Bay Bucs jerseys in the last 3 years than I have NQ Cowboys....... why??

Because all our jerseys are utter ass, I wanna wear something that looks good, not some try hard bulls head piece of sh*t, making jerseys look decent should be more of a priority than this stupid numbering crap.

what would you honestly want to wear (national pride and code pride aside)

this simple yet attractive jersey

or this utter rubbish

I agree that names on the back of jerseys would be great, however, you are cutting a sponsor out of the equation who give $$$$$ to the club, yeah you might get people buying a few more jerseys because of said names, but it's totally negated due to a loss of a sponsor.

That's what happens even without the player name/numbers on the jerseys in the NRL. Teams change sponsors and designs pretty much every year, your jersey is outdated as soon as the season ends.

Bring back the old NSWRL numbering system!!!

1 - 13 for 1st Grade
14 - 27 for Reserve Grade
28 - 41 for U20's
42+ for the bench in each grade.

Ahhh, the good old days!

Yes, they should have been talking about the salary cap.

However I don't see why we cant have individual numbers. The jersey system of the NFL is one of the few things from that game that I would like to adopt, largely due to the historical nature of it all.

I like the idea of teams retiring the numbers of club greats. Its instant and permanent recognition for former heroes of the code. Implementing a proper hall of fame would be next on the list, along with the dismantling of that poxy list known as the "immortals".... why the favourite childhood players of a couple journos at RLW has become the be all and end all of our games history is beyond me.

Sure some might argue that changing to individual numbers will hurt tradition, but after 20 years it will start its own, better tradition. Should be embraced IMO.

Don't like it.

Whole thing about the current numbering system is it makes understanding the sport more accessible to people. Individual numbers would be impossible to explain to people.

Personalised numbering is an oxymoron - there is nothing more dehumanising than using numbers to identify someone. The players name would be fare more respectful.

Problem with the name on the back is it takes advertising space which clubs could not afford.

If we are only doing this to make the jersey 'marketable' it could work if you printed the name down one side of the jersey in front of the arm.

The only other place would be in front under the sponsors logo. But down the side seems better to me - for some reason - not sure why?

There was an Everton fan (EPL), who when Wayne Rooney declared at like 19 that he would never leave Everton, decided to to get a tattoo of Wayne Rooney's face on his lower leg. Within a year Rooney took up the big cash and joined Man Utd. This poor bloke has been constantly mocked in public by everyone ever since
