Crowe's pad would cost more than $150k per year to live in at anything close to fair market rates, so the article is full of sh*t right there.

He was in Russell Crowes pad. That was only in the off season while searching for a place of his own.

Backloading to that extent is not entirely ucommon either

It seems they would be able to cover the majority of that on the allowance provided to players for relocation expenses that are not subject to the cap

Are you entirely sure it is the penthouse he is living in?

I am sure Crowe owns more than a few Sydney residential properties.

FTR I am not a Souths fan and if there is something shady it should most certainly be investigated

The whole Burgess deal has always appeared a little suss. No way is he only worth $150k and $300k at the end of his contract. I am sure that the transfer fee was a lot higher than mentioned in the article. Others have pointed out that this transfer fee didn't go to him but I still am of the opinion that without paying it Souths wouldn't have his services so it must be included in the salary cap.

The whole private ownership raises some ugly issues.

From the article-

''It's all declared and Sam is not receiving any money anywhere else from Souths or any entities associated with the club, other than what is declared,'' Richardson said.

End of story. Unless anyone has any evidence to prove otherwise then you are all making assumptions based on fantasy. i.e unsubstantiated allegations.

FTR, Dave Taylor is on $250k a year and I would rate them both to be at approximately the same stage of development.

There we go...

6-7 months at a top shelf penthouse, with change left out of his some $90K after tax salary to now rent out another place and cover his living expenses.

Not suss at all

I have long held doubts on this whole deal,Burgess was coming to the WestsTigers, the tele even run a story on it,after talking to Ellis and Flanagan who had already signed, then Rusty flew to england,Burgess suddenly becomes a Rabbit, for 4 years no less.
Now I am suppose to beleive this all occurred for $266k a year,it doesn't make any sense, maybe when the Schu finishes in Melbourne he should head to redfern.

His contract with South Sydney, according to a document on file with the Department of Immigration, is structured as follows: Year one: $150,000, a a pro rata amount (derived from $180,000) for 10 months' salary because he did not join the club until late last year; Year two: $243,750 plus an image-rights contract of $56,600 not included in base salary; Year three: $300,000; Year four: $300,000. The contract includes as a package amount, except for the image-rights portion, all leave, pro-rata long-service leave and 9 per cent superannuation.

Richardson confirmed the details of the contract lodged with Immigration but said it had been superseded by another, written in November, in which the image-rights portion was absorbed into a sign-on fee.

http://www.smh.com.au/rugby-league/...rwards-for-a-mere-1million-20100510-uot6.html

so is the image rights amount 56,000 for just year two? or is it for year 2-4
in which case is his sign on fee 56000? or 168,000?

Wow. Someone knocked back a contract with the Tigers to join Souths. My God, we need a royal commission!

Interesting to note that a lot of you guys think that Burgess is worth more than $300k a year...

Sure he has played a few tests for England, but he is still only early 20's and has done zero in the NRL. Would be interesting to know what the likes of Ellis is on at the Tigers. Would also be interesting to know what Watmough and Stewart earn at Manly. All are more advanced in their individual careers and all are probably only on around $300 - $350k. As I mentioned earlier, Dave Taylor is on around $250k at Souths and that was a considerable pay rise. He is seen as a future QLD and possibly even Aussie rep and he is around the same age as Burgess. So imo between $250 and $300k a year as it averages out is about right for Sam.
