Ricky Stuart quits as Cronulla Sharks coach
Phil Rothfield From: The Daily Telegraph May 24, 2010 10:31AM

That's all folks ... coach Ricky Stuart will leave the Sharks at the end of the season. Source: The Daily Telegraph

EMBATTLED coach Ricky Stuart has quit the Cronulla Sharks. The former Test and Origin coach has handed in his resignation and will leave at the end of the season.

I asked Stuart about his future at the Sharks last week and he said: “I don’t want to talk about it.”

It is believed he has been in talks with the Sharks management about his future for several weeks.

The club has called a midday press conference to announce the decision.

My information is that assistant coach Shane Flanaghan will be named as the replacement next year.

Over the weekend, Stuart’s named was linked to the Wests Tigers.

Wow... Did not expect that. Especially after things seemed to work on Saturday night...

Flanagan as replacement coach? Eh.... Why not try to get Murray?

Might be good for a change, but is his less qualified assistant who is already there now really the best man for the job?

Surely they can afford a reasonably high profile replacement with Ricky's salary?

This is great news, break out the champagne, Stuart is gone.

And i was thinking of leaving the forum, now i have reason too stay.

Now all we need is the Robin of the Dynamic Duo too leave in Barrett, please Trent resign today as well.

Will Ricky step back now and let Flannagan coach team for the rest of the season. Ricky stays on as an advisor.

Hmm does that mean he'll step down immediately? He did at the chooks, and I'm sure he's said in the past he doesn't see it as tenable a situation where a coach remains in charge when he isn't going to be there next season.

Either way I'll give credit to sticky for stepping down if true because it cannot have been an easy decision for him to make. If he can't get a club for next season, I could see him doing great things with the blues in 2011 and beyond.

I'd prefer if we appoint flannagan for the rest of the year and let him show whether or not he's good enough to take the reins in 2011. It's only round 10, there is still plenty of time for him. I'm not asking us to be contenders, but if we show marked improvement between now and the end of the season I think he will have done enough to earn a contract for next year.

All you fools celebrating need to understand that this is not a good situation for the club.
The last thing our club needs right now is instability.

That is a really good point. I am a big fan of a SOO coach that isn't attached to a club and I think Ricky would be a good fit for it. He can get players to really fire up - it's when over a couple of seasons at a club it can wear thin...

Still... Flanagan?
