CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

I'd like to see them have the name plate on the back of each jersey too. If they want to increase merchandise I think that, not the player number would be the way to go.

It shouldn't carry over each season, it should reset every year, just say Cayless picks 10, it doesn't stop a younger player picking 10 when he is the starting prop.

Also, in the case of Lockyer, he would have been number 1 for the start of his career and will get number 6 now. This would keep most people happy but if Lockyer got injured and didn't play the rest of the year you would have a player with a different number in there.

Imagine the young number 23 on debut then next year getting the number 6. It would be like a reward for achievement. Tim Mannah would be aiming for the number 10 and working hard to wear it.

The numbers historically relating to positions is a relatively short one. I am not sure of the exact date, but I am sure I have read that in a post from RL_1908

I'd be happy if someone like Lockyer to wear the number as long as he liked. You see guys in the NBA get traded and pay the guy on the new team who currently wears the number to change.

Plus teams would retire certain players numbers which is especially cool. People would get certain players numbers too across more than one team if they were to switch.

Allen Iverson had one of the highest selling jerseys year in, year out across three different teams.

I like the idea as long as it's done right and it's just a mess. Names on the jerseys should definitely be there ala State of Origin.

Hi All, I heard a rumour that from next season, players can choose there own numbers like NFL, EPL etc...

Is this true?

I personally love the idea from a Symbolisim and Merchandising Manner!

Thoughts - Even tho, this has probably been brought up before...

Already happens in Super League. We already copped the forwards numbering being reversed in 89 (just why did that happen - does anyone know?), so I'm sure we'd cop players wearing fixed numbers. After all, the only reason players wear numbers at all is so they can be identified by the officials, commentators, and spectators.

p.s. the word is "their"

Im not a fan of it to be honest. For those that are new to league, they find it easier to understand the positions of players by their number. You tell a newbie to the game that the fullback wears number 1, its much easier for them to follow.

I'd like it if it for a squad of 25 keep their numbers for the season

so for eg. If 18th man for lol@souffs is Mogsheen Jadwat, he'll keep that number despite playing fullback etc

which i guess is probably insinuated in the rumour

So why wouldnt we have thier names as well? if it was to solve I.D.

But Fans and Commentators would soon ID the players with thier own players...its not that hard...

I'd like it to be honest. But if they do go down that road they have to have players surnames too.

They could go the NFL route and allocate a certain group of numbers to positions for the players to pick from. Or they could go the NBA route and just have players go bonkers for whatever number they want.

I'd much prefer to see players surnames on the back of jerseys again. I couldn't believe my eyes when NSW didn't have them last game.

I think that'll be cool, I think they should have their names on them too. Good for merchandising, NBA makes a killing on jersey sales. And i reckon it'll probably make Rabs job alot easier imo.

Really, I thought they just got allocated a jersey number based on their number in the squad/in order of appearance?

Like they dont get to choose, the top team is still 1-17, and there isnt any 99's running around?

BunniesMan has been for this for a longtime. The fact that numbers are linked to positions in the modern game is geniused. We have fullbacks playing like haves, backrowers playing like centres etc etc.

BunniesMan is for it, now the clubs are for it. Make it happen. I know if they did it even though I already have a jersey I'd go immediatley and get Inglis's jersey.

Can someone just shoot this idiot so I don't have to accidentally read part of a post again...
