CEOs: Let's change jersey numbers

Should players be allowed to chose their own jersey number?

You're kidding right?

How many times do you see number 19 or 21 running onto the footy field with the starting lineup?
How often is number 4 playing fullback or number 11 is a center.

They name the team on Tuesdays, coaches decide their lineups as the week goes on, and they're compelled to keep the same numbering announced Tuesday.....
Much less than you having a 4 at center or a 1 at f/b

People that whinge about ideas like this need to grow up and open their bloody minds.
This is a good idea, it's good for making money, it's a great idea.

I don't see how its a great idea. Its an average idea at best. Can't see how it would make any extra money. Numbers much higher than 20 on jerseys looks ridiculous anyway. 1 - 17 is just so tidy.

I'm not going to get into whether players should wear number 1 or 60, but, I think another issue here is that you can't get proper jerseys with players numbers on them. Or even if you can, it's very very rare.

Sure, you can buy a jersey, go to Amart or Rebel and get a number put on, but its not the same. It most likely won't be the same font, possibly not even the same colour. This might be okay for some, but I know a lot of people (especially jersey enthusiasts, who would be more likely to buy them in the first place) that would be pretty picky and would not be happy wearing jerseys that don't look exactly the same to those on field.

Keeping one player in the same jersey all year could help this, because it would allow jerseys to be sold player by player. At the moment, that doesn't happen.

How the f*ck would it sell more jerseys? "Oi Mum - I suddenly want A Dogs 666 Jumper now that Ennis is not a 12 anymore"

But the fullbacks are still fullbacks, are they not?

Its not about f*cking up for no reason either.

Can players pick their own colours too?

I can imagine the pile of Brisbane jumpers with Inglis's number at the Brisbane tip, and the recievers winding up the poor sports store that bought them all.

And what of this scenario: Inglis joins Souffs - wants #4, because he was #4 in Melbourne. But hang on, Nathan Merrit has been #4 for years. Inglis says "I'm 4 or I'm going to Brisbane". Suddenly Merit is #19.................

And the sum of this great idea for sl? Some twat went for #23 because of Michael Jordan. Wow - that's a great result for changing RL tradition.

Keep the numbering system as is. Numbers should ALWAYS reflect the position. That way when I see No 16 on the field and it's a player I dont recognise, I at least know he's a benchie and he's probably replaced a forward.

Anyway, Souths would be f*cked because no one there can count higher than 10 unless they take their shoes off.

You know funny thing is that already happens in the NFL, when new, established players change teams they often 'buy' a jersey number off the current player at the club.

Example, when Clinton Portis changed to the Redskins he paid the current #26 $20,000 to play in that jersey.

Ridiculous idea imo... having personal jersey numbers will only serve to pander to the already healthy egos of those certain elite players (and their managers) always with an eye to making more and more money, and those who would walk away from contracts (and the code of rugby league) in a second just to further their own individual "brands".

Whatever happened to the concept , "the game is always bigger than the individual"

In this age it's more of a symbiosis between individuals and the game. Without the stars - the game gets less publicity, media coverage, hence the game suffers. Without the game, the stars have no platform to strut their stuff, and they suffer.

Don't forget, Rugby League was born out of a desire to have better conditions and treatment for the players.

Oh and they so need better conditions and treatment. Choosing their own number would so improve their quality of life..............

If it generates more income for their club, themselves and the game as a whole, then yes.

What's wrong with a player being able to make the most of all the opportunities he gets during his career, such as revenue from merchandise, marketing and other revenue streams?

If this is one more thing that helps keep our players in our game, and attracts more players and young fans to our game, then it should be something that is implemented.

You just know it would lead to star players demanding a %cut of all merchandise sold with their number on it further eroding income to the code as a whole.

They can still market their own name as a brand without changing the number system on jerseys.
GI can sell GI limited edition speedboat seat cushions.
Lockyer can sell cough lollies 'locky's lozenges'
Jarryd Hayne - haynetrain air travel slippers and tissues
Josh Dugan - 'duges old fashioned boil unguent'
JT - novelty condoms shaped like his head

Etc etc - no need to f**k with the jersey.

You are right. I feel for poor old Bruno Cullen. cutie only left so he could pick his own number. Cullens hands were tied. cutie wanted the number 2 - because thats how many friends he needs to help him bonk a girl. In NRL, fullbacks only get No. 1.

And really, how many kids are going to change codes because of the number on a players back? Do you study hard to come up with something so stupid or is it a natural talent ffs?

Mmhm.

You should check out your own team mate.

Nathan Hindmarsh has worn 11 for years because that's "his number" - but he plays lock for Parramatta.
Andersen publicly said Hindmarsh was his '11' during his coaching tenure, and there's nothing different in the way he's playing this season. The 'second rowers' (who run wide one on each side of the ruck) are the numbers 12 and 13 for Parra instead of the 11 and 12.

Hindmarsh is one of the most bankable players at Parra - what sort of uproar do you think it would cause if he had his jersey number changed to 13 last season?
Great - all the kids who put an 11 on their jersey are now Taniela Lasalo fans??

Manly did the same thing with Menzies and his number.

There's no big deal giving players whatever number they want - if anything it's better.
I'd suggest limiting the numbers to double digits only - and of course when a player changes clubs, that brings a different set of scenarios - but that's no biggie at all.

No that's dumb, obviously the numbers should go up to the amount that makes the squad at the start of the year.

You can't? Probably because you were too narrow minded to actually think about it.

Jarryd Hayne, Darren Lockyer, Jonathan Thurston....those numbers would be specifically bought more and the money would go directly to the club making the club more dosh.
It's not that hard, but a lot of the fans in LU are incrediably narrow minded.

what? how does putting a 6 on a broncos jumper sell more? you can get a 6 put onto the jumper

are fans not buying jumpers because they dont have numbers on them? [perhaps we shoudl educate people that iron on numbers have been around for decades and can be done pretty quickly and easily.

no one has explained how making lockyer only play in a #6 jumper will lead to more broncos jumpers being sold.
