What a load of crap.

If this happens I will stop supporting the national team of my own country. Pathetic.

So there are rules in place, but you can get around them if you feel like it? Or are from one of the big nations at least.

Ridiculous. Pretty obvious what will happen, considering the RLIF is basically the ARL...

Whats even more embarrassing is the same Geoff Carr who forwarded the request letter onto the NRL saying "as long as he's (McGuire) is geniune...." is the same Geoff Carr who less than a year ago warned Vidot & McGuire about playing for Samoa said: "If they are ineligible for Australia, they are ineligible for Queensland," ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said. "It's straightforward. We can't keep downplaying our own game. Saturday's Test is a full international and Vidot and McGuire have elected to play for Samoa. They can't have it both ways." http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nrl/origin-dreams-take-a-big-hit/story-e6frexnr-1225937866116

Geoff Carr is king of all knob jockeys!

mods can this thread be merged with the arls blunder on josh mcgure thread?

there are two problems here. mcguire should have known that playing for samoa last year would rule him out of playing for australia. he openly said at the time that he wanted to play for australia but didnt think he would be good enough for a few years so wanted to honour his grandfather and play for his heritage. if he wanted to eventually play for australia, he shouldnt even be allowed to play for samoa! people bag vidot or the rules that stopped him from playing, but vidot did the right thing in stepping down and didnt make our sport look like a farce!

the second joke of course is carr who cimply has no idea how to run an international sport! has he even got anything to do with the rlif anymore? he is not eligible until 2013, simple as that. our rules are pathetically weak in regards to switching, and we STILL find ways to break them! the new rlif boss should be stepping in here and putting the arl in its place!

I was going to say the Rlif is run by monkeys, but then I thought even they could do a better job.

after the 2008 world cup laws where put in place to prevent switching repeatedly

the law, masterminded by the ARL and agreed by all,was that whoever you played for from 2009 onwards you where tied into that nation till after the 2013 world cup...

this law served 2 purposes...

1.it enabled the ARL to get the likes of hayne and jennings back and players like chris bridge & ben harrison to switch from ireland to england after the 2008 RLWC

2. it would have enabled 2nd tier nations a 5 year platform to build on

Uate (fiji 09 pacific cup) should never have been allowed to switch...even geoff carr pointed this out when NSWRL wanted to pick him for city v country in 2010, carr even said
http://rlcm.isntweb.net/latest-news/5378-rugby-league
Carr said NRL clubs and player agents should ensure their players knew the regulations.
"To plead ignorance in this is becoming very difficult, because we keep telling them," Carr said. "There have been many issues that highlighted this, and obviously players have managers who should check before letting them play in these teams."

geoff carr,as we know, then buckled and let him switch..indeed supporting the switch..

this is why the floodgates opened again....the RLIF can't decline anyones application to swtich now as they'd be taken straight to court!!!!

all this because a player wanted to play a state game......fantastic!

You mean like Tonie Carroll, Brad Thorne, Jarryd Hayne, Lote Tuqiri, Hazem El Masri, Nigel Vagana, Ali Lautiti....

Special rules are made for the World Cup. It promotes the game having high profile players represent the minor countries in such a competition and also makes them competitive. Our World Cup is more a promotion at the moment rather than a serious competition so it works.

There are no special rules in place at all. The rules keep getting changed and bent, but there are no "world cup" rules. Without strict rules our sport will never grow!

Of course it will grow and the rule is there to help it grow. Allowing players to change alligiences simply for World Cups promotes the game in the smaller nations and allows those teams to be more competitive. Having someone like Jarryd Hayne playing for Fiji did a lot for the game there. If he were told if he played for Fiji that tournament but couldn't switch back the following year then he wouldn't have switched to Fiji in the first place and RL there would have suffered because of it. The same goes for other players and the other countries they represented.

Sorry Spud i usually agree with what you say..

But didnt Fijis semi final appearance cause mass purchases of TV's and whatnot.

And hasnt RL activity in Fiji increased by 150% in Fiji since the world cup

yeah right, sure you do mate. But I thought McGuire was being touted as a possibility for the Kiwi squad? I bet you wouldn't be feigning such outrage if that had worked out. Of course, the truth is McGuire should have never been allowed to play for Samoa in the first place. Whoever is in charge of Samoa should have talked with him to get an assurance that he was committed to the cause. But they didn't, because they knew what the answer would be.
