Honestly I'd like to see Katich given another crack, he never did anything to warrant his axing and he played pretty well with Watson at the top of the order. I wouldn't mind seeing Cowan and Katich opening with Warner or watson at #3.

Hughes (minus his outside off stump defense flaw)
Cowan
Khawaja

Hughes should never again get anywhere close to being selected for a test.

Can anyone actually hold a bat in this test? I am hoping so because at the moment my members ticket for the 4th day is looking next to useless.

While both are talented the difference between Hughes and Warner is when I think of Hughes I think of a gritty fighter who despite his technical issues showed in his last test how hard he is willing to fight for his wicket. Once he sorts his problem out he'll be a very good Test batsman. Warner on the other hand is just as talented and doesn't have that glaring technical flaw but I just don't see that inner steel in him. He'll score big every now and then but too often he'll get out looking lazy.

In a very rough comparison Hughes is S Waugh, Warner is a 21st century M Waugh. If Hughes scores in Febuary-March in shield games and then does well in the off season in county cricket he's an automatic selection for me for the start of next summer.

Don't be too harsh on Marsh. Having an average over 38 was doing his head in. That's fixed now so he'll feel much more comfortable and should be good for the odd 20 or 30.

Since when has Khawaja made 3 runs in 3 innings including 2 ducks? Khawaja might not score as fast but his technique and defenses crap all over Marsh and Uzi is a better and more committed fielder.

It's actually 3 runs in 4 innings including 3 ducks.

I find Cowan's temperament (as opposed to Warner's) so refreshing. Warner is to Australia what McCullum is to NZ- there's no doubt he can bat, but often get's out playing rash shots and seems to lack the patience required to be a test opener.

The entire current squad could be long retired before Hughes gets his technique right. He's had problems for too long, going back to shield cricket didn't fix it, it didn't seem to help at all.

He did bat pretty well in Bellrieve on a bowlers pitch

The point was Hughes has 1 fixable flaw standing between him and realising the potential he has to score lots of runs at Test level. One assumes he will spend the bulk of 2012 working on that at 1st class level both here and in England.

If he does and he scores heavily at 1st class level, I have him in my team for next summer.

Hughes needs a decent strech in first class cricket, like 2 years decent sort of strech. Would do him no good to bring him back at this point.
