how has he been able to shine? newcastle have been mediocre at best

Danny has been playing well in that 'mediocre' team. If he wasn't, he wouldn't even be considered let alone front runner for the 9 spot.

Watch the Knights V Bulldogs game this year and it's a classic example of what he's been doing all year - leading the defence in line speed and chopping down blokes 3x his size 1 on 1, making plenty of tackles and providing good service out of dummy half.

But he has 0 try assists and 0 linebreaks, so he's shit

Buderus has a part to play in Origin this year but it definitely aint as an 80min hooker. You can't fault him defensively or his ball distribution. However, we also need some attack from dummy half and another kicking option and Buderus doesn't offer much in that respect.

Farah's figures give Stuart food for Origin thought

Danny Buderus might well be Ricky Stuart's favourite to be the Blues' State of Origin hooker for game one but some not so flattering statistics show Buderus will need to play his game of the year if the Blues plan on preventing a seventh-straight series defeat. While Stuart hopes the former Blues captain will have an inspirational, Allan Langer-like effect - think the 2001 Origin series when Langer returned to steer the Maroons to an unlikely series victory - on the Blues side, this year's statistics show Robbie Farah clearly has the wood on the Newcastle hero. Buderus has missed twice as many tackles as Farah, made three-quarters less offloads, has made 14 metres less each game and has run the ball half as much. And Farah is second, behind Cameron Smith, as the hooker with the most kicks this season; the Wests Tigers captain has kicked the ball 23 times. Buderus, not known for his kicking game, has two.

Over the last few years nsw have tried various methods of beating old but have come empty. Really the only way your going to win is to score a heap of points because you will not be able to keep them to a low score. So you need a spine that has some real attacking skill and Farah is way in front at present and Ennis is next with Danny Boy back in the field.I get the feeling sticky will try the defensive approach that has failed him for years

Again the stats argument is trotted out. Ok then, the genius writing that article fails to mention that Farah has missed 2 games, therefore Buderus has missed 3 tackles a game so far this year and Farah 2. So not much difference and definitely not twice as many. Buderus also has a habit of flying out of the line and clipping the runner in an attempt to slow their momentum. Sometimes this results in a missed tackle in the stats.

Obviously Buderus barely kicks because Mullen does 80% of the Knights kicking and Gidley the rest. For the Tigers and Storm their hookers are probably their number 2 kicking option.

Oh and Farah also has 0 tries, 0 line breaks and only 1 try assist. For a supposed 'attacking' hooker he's not exactly blowing Buderus out of the water is he. Admittedly he has 3 line break assists so is winning there, but as I said in a previous post if Buderus' teammates had been more on the ball to start the year they could have better supported Buderus' half breaks.

lol Stats

91% of people know that 67% of all statistics only represent 32% of a players abilities across 54% of games.

Surely the reason why Farah is the number 2 kicking option and Buderus is not in club footy is because of their differing kicking abilities, not just because some coaches prefer the #9 to kick and others the #7.

Ie. Buderus would kick more if he was a better kicker.

There is benefit to playing both players. Bedsy brings one set of skills and a proven origin performer (Despise a few games according to a few of those on here), and Farag brings another set.

If it was my choice I'd have Bedsy starting with Farah the bench utility but Gidley will be there. Gidley provided a good spark last year and no doubt his only way is up from here so no doubt he will put in 100%

I agree stats should not be too heavily relied on but the fact that Robbies stats are better then Bedsys when its pretty common opinion the Farah has been playing shithouse until CvC is worth considering, the running metres especially.

Yes but you need to take into account opposition too. The problem with stats is that all things arnt equal when comparing 2 players who play for different teams against different opposition with likely vastly different game plans to work from.

You can only judge a player by what you see not what you read

So other than Farrar and Buderus, who have we got? Farrar's prone to mistakes that cost in my opinion.

Mitch Rein should be a contender by next year. Probably hasn't played enough NRL yet to be considered this year, but he's a gooden I reckon.
