Social media & bullying

I didn't know 9gag had that bad a community, was just aware of the sometimes cool & amazing photos.

4Chan on the other hand are noted for targeting somebody and making their lives miserable outside of the internet.

Cyber bullying is terrible but Dawson should have known what she was getting herself into and I believe she has bigger issues than just what's occurred online even if they proved to be a tipping point.

So many d!ckheads out there that like to abuse celebrities from behind a computer. I don't see the point. I dare say 99% of them would never have the guts to say it to their face. Don't get me wrong I love stirring up people on here but 99% of the time I would say that to their face as I like to stir. Some of the sh!t people put on twitter is terrible. Dawson should have just blocked and logged out but the real cause of the issue the abusive, redneck, simpletons that like hanging sh!t on famous people because they can with no consequence.

There is absolutely zero that can be done about these people. It's the nature of the internet and it will NEVER change. I was plumbing the depths of the internet before I hit puberty so I intrinsically understand what will and won't draw the ire of anonymous geniuss.

The problem is that there are people who hear about something like twitter, hop on and start tweeting things without understanding internet social dynamics. Like it or not the web breaks down communication barriers, which works both ways. If you're a celebrity a fan can tweet you and tell you they love your work, but also someone who despises you can tell you to kill yourself.

Lots of people cannot handle the fact that people are saying what they think directly to them without social barriers like courtesy or the threat of violence to filter their words.

Understand all that. I just don't agree or condone that type of behaviour, not that I really care a great deal.

Everyone handles this stuff differently. When people give me crap online it's easy to ignore it initially, take a moment and not react. Others don't have that ability. I've seen many facebook fights over my news feed that just leave me shaking my head, but some people will go into fight mode. For me it's a simple philosophy, these people who try to make fun of you online only want a reaction, why would you give someone you don't like what they want?

That said, I've seen some pretty twisted stuff, 2-3 years after I finished high school a girl in a lower grade took her life because of this stuff. People set up a tribute page for her on Facebook, yet within a couple of hours the trolls came in. If it had of been a friend of mine who had died, I probably would have found it hard to bite back on my tongue in that situation.

That is the stuff I just do not get. I don't mind a troll myself but not on anything like that. I find it beyond belief someone would do that but have seen it.

Women are four times more likely to attempt suicide than men, men just succeed at it a lot more often. I reckon the reason is that the chicks just want attention.

If you're serious about killing yourself you are really unlikely to fail at it.

True to a point, but women also generally choose less violent ways off offing themselves. These probably have a higher rate of not working.

One of the reasons I like to visit and participate in the discussions on LU is the generally friendly atmosphere, replete with bonhomie and deep, thoughtful dialogue.

Just makes me very greatful that I grew up and went through High School before social media when the internet was still in it's infancy, when it was still refered to as the information super highway

I like when people posting on the comments section of news articles say that people shouldn't waste time on social media

^ this.

it's worth noting that what many members of 4chan have been involved in are more than your typical online-bullying. they will go to to the lengths of finding out your home address, your phone number, and all that shit if they are determined to get at you. that's just in addition to the usual hacking of your facebook, flooding your emails and any communication service of yours with shit. troll through some news articles and you'll see there's been several people who have offed themselves because of this sort of harassment. they can make your life real f**king miserable if they feel like it.

in standard circumstances with some typical online bullying i'd just say harden the f**k up, walk away, deal with it... but usually the people who find themselves in these situations have extremely low self-esteem and it's harder for them to do so. but when it comes to some of the shit that 4chantards and other boards do... my sympathy goes out to them.

Well it all depends on how bad the perceived slight is but they have gotten a couple of people arrested on things like animal abuse charges. A couple of people have their work and home phones bombarded with messages and dozens of full page black images sent to their fax to basically f**k their machine by having it print black pages all day. A few have lost jobs, a few have had nude photos of the person mailed to their family, things like that. If all else fails they sign you up for thousands of free condom samples and mailing lists, dumb shit mostly.

Just a couple things I can remember happening off the top of my head.

I don't mind trolling either (usually just with people I know will take it the right way), but like everyone I know where to draw the line. Some idiots don't. The fact that you are behind a screen gives you less incentive to censor yourself as you know you can't cop a smack for it.

I do hate to bring it up, but remembering some of the shit i've read/seen first-hand etc of what 4chantards and other such sites have done, and still do, to very much unsuspecting people, I can't help but f**king laugh my head off at the geniuss in the greatest hits thread crying over what happened to Bunniesman. surely they are having a reverse troll at my expense or something. having your facebook posted and a few people making fun of you, jesus christ. it doesn't even register on the same scale.

This is borderline 4C so happy for it to be shifted if deemed necessary.

Not sure if anyone's heard of/followed the story about Charlotte Dawson.

Basically, she copped it on Twitter for daring to seek out an online bully and dob them in to their university employer. It escalated after she went public about the abuse she was copping on the tabloid news shows on 7 & 9... then culminated in her being taken to hospital early this morning.

She tweeted "hope this ends the misery" and "you win x" around 2am before being rushed to St Vincents at 3am.

It looks like 9gag got involved at some point as well.

Basically I'm in two minds about this one. Bullying online is shit and relentless groups like 9gag and 4chan etc... that stuff is crazy. Wouldn't condone any of it for a second.

That said, it seems she's dealt with it so poorly - as some have said on Twitter, she didn't exercise her two best options: the BLOCK and SIGN OUT buttons.

Anyone follow this story and/or have thoughts?

what if the troll managed to hack into her account and knows every detail about her? where she lives, where her relatives live and all that shit? that would f**k anyone up.....

luckily intelligent trolls dont usually follow sport so we shouldnt have this problem in LU!

f**k I HATE MY COMPUTER. UTTER PIECE OF JUNK!

Is it wrong of me to wish a slow, drawn out, painful death on the f**kwits who perpetrate the shit Apey and BDR are talking about?

She was a celebrity, there's probably not a whole lot about her that isn't public record.

While I'm not condoning it, the targets aren't random, they have usually done something to warrant being picked upon. Especially in the heyday of 4chan they would usually go after people who made animal abuse videos and shit like that. These days though they're probably more vindictive and go after people who do stuff they disagree with like starting a Bieber fan page on facebook or something.

Also they have typical internet attention spans, if you can weather the two weeks of utter shitstorm you're more or less in the clear.

1. she's a celebrity anyway.

2. Why would her twitter account contain details about her home address or relatives home address? :?
