It wouldnt bother me so much if it wasnt always the f**king Live game in Qld every week. Dont they realise that they will lose ratings by playing the same team each week. Even Broncos fans want it mixed up a bit FFS!!

Bronco's are welcome to the 9.30pm game in sydney every week as far as I'm concerned. Farked if I can sit through the add riddled game anyway! Think the decision may bite channel 9 on the arse if its approved anyway....fair chance the broncs will struggle this year.

No Thursday night games!

In fact we can go one better and get rid of Monday night games and replace them with Sunday night 6.30pm games!

But this is too user friendly for the fan/supporter!

In the news reports yesterday I heard Mattiske say that Easts/Souths wouldn't necessarily open the season.

Is he just trying to downplay the leak to Rothfield? Or indirectly alluding to the Shenzhen game?

Very happy with what has been released with the draw. We got the plenty of FTA games that we deserved. I wish Brisbane got a bit less but that's never gunna happen because the supposedly Rugby League mad Canetoads in Rugby League "heartland" won't watch either of the two other teams in their state.

Are you geniused? People have been screaming for variety for the last few years.

I'm a Broncos supporter and I'd rather watch the Cowboys who are actually entertaining.

Hardcore fans on here may but that is not representative of mainstream fans that make up the bulk of tv viewers. The Tits and Cowboys don't rate as well as the Broncos. If Queenslanders were as rugby league mad as they like to think they are, just as many of them would watch Tit/Cow games as they would when Brisbane plays.

The other two teams get the occassional game and those games rate significantly less than Brisbane games. That's why 9 puts Brisbane on so much.

And that's why claims made by Canetoads about how they love rugby league more than NSW people are bullshit.

Got any figures to back that up? I always hear it but I've never seen any figures to prove or disprove it.

I tallied up all the ratings earlier today, sourcing from http://www.tvtonight.com.au/.

Across 26 rounds, the average ratings in Brisbane was 268.5k (Sydney 380.7). 7:30 game only.
The average of the Broncos 18 games was 287.8k.
The average of the other 8 games was 225k (243k minus the game shown on GEM).

Can't really compare it to Cows because 3/4 of their games were against other Queensland teams, you would need to look over previous years to get a better idea how their ratings hold up against some of the lower drawers. Their non Qld game was Vs Dragons and got 274k (R9).
Titans are similar, but with more 9:30 games also.

Logic? Nine is a for profit business. The betters its ratings the more profit it makes. And while you and I don't have detailed week to week ratings going back years I bet someone at nine has a spreadsheet that shows what every club has rated in every game since they've had the rights.

Nine puts Brisbane on so much in its primetime slot in Queensland because over a number of years they have come to the conclusion that the Broncos rate better. There is literally no other reason for them to do it. So it is a very safe and likely assumption to make.

Can someone explain to me how the draw is constructed? I.e. how does the NRL determine the 9 clubs each team plays twice? Is it random?

I know that between 2002-2006 it was based on the finishing positions from the previous season. I don't know how that would work now though.

I'm hoping it's done using strategy. All local derbies played twice, plus all Western Sydney teams against each other twice etc etc.

i think all the clubs are asked whom they would like to play at their own home venue prior to the draw being organized (we always ask for Brisbane, GC, Melbourne and tigers up here because those are generally the 4 bigger crowd pullers in NQ) as well as any other additional requests scheduling wise. I do remember reading a few years ago the company that did the draw was Canadian but not sure if the NRL still use said Canucks any more.

So, to summarise, you're saying no?

So it makes a difference, but not a massive one. Not a big enough difference to justify having the Broncos every single week I wouldn't have thought, but then I'm not a TV exec.

My understanding is that in recent years the NRL tries to construct it to encourage better attendance, more blockbusters etc.

Clubs usually get 7 or 8 preferences they submit and where possible the NRL *usually* addresses 90% of those.

Since 2008 each club submits a list of the teams they would like to play at home in order of preference. Each club can decide their preferences based on any criteria they like. Traditional rivals, strong crowd pullers, easy opponents, whatever. For the 2008 season each club got their top four preferences and six of their top seven.
