Why is Matthew Elliott such a terrible coach?

My favourite Matty Elliott moment was when he selected Terry Martin at 5/8th. For the first time ever in his career. In a finals match.

Almost as good as putting a back that can't tackle (Purtell) into the starting backrow in a finals game.

genuinely shit bloke who gets zero respect from his players.

a coach who hasnt got the respect of his players has no chance of successfully implementing any plans, if he even had good game plans

He was always a weird dude with strange ideas.

Then he spent a year coaching with Brian Smith. Game over man, game over

Hagen is probably another example, in fact there's many you could put in that category and none of them were very successful. Elliot, Hagen, Taylor, Fittler, Brown etc

Taylor? The blokes an absolute merkin that ends up like this when he goes and drinks with the boys:

Well he did manage to get 2 teams who were not top 4 quality on paper into the top 4, Raiders 03 and Panthers 10. Unfortunately everything else has been garbage.

He'd be a great bloke to go out on the town and smash the cans with, which is the exact same reason he's a bad coach. Could you imagine seeing Bennett or Bellamy out sinking piss with the boys? Of course not. He wants to be everyone's mate, so the players don't respect him when it's "serious time".
I had a boss like that years ago, most fun I ever had at work, least serious working environment I've ever worked in and least productive.

Pretty much this.

Wayne Bennett is also on record saying this is also why Allan Langer wouldn't make a good NRL Coach.

i dont think anyone understands him. i remember reading the reason he got punted midseason at penith was cos he had a meeting with gould to talk footy and after 3 hours gould had no idea what the hell he was on about.

remember the footage the sunday roast had where he had all the panthers staring at each other before games...

Elliott is left field and you can't have left field ideas as a coach because bugger all players can keep up with you. It's a simple game and you don't need to confuse things by over complicating things.

One of my mates played at the Doggies for a few years in the forwards. His pre match instructions were "Don't pass the ball". Pretty simple stuff. All the complex stuff is said to the 7 and 9.

I'm not sure whether the Matt the zen master would have got through to him and his team mates.

big hit!

i think anyone could've told us that Elliot is not the bloke to manage the Warriors roster.

How they couldn't work that out is beyond me.

He took the raiders to 4 finals from 5 seasons with not much cash or talent and took a horrible Penrith panthers to 2nd. These are solid results. I actually think he will go well at the warriors but it will take them half a season to get on his page. In saying that he is a wierd one but is great for the game

He's a true snake oil salesman. He could probably sell water to a whale. Only Gus had the intelligence to see through the idiots bullshit. Unfortunately the Warriors admin didn't.

I'm sick of that ridiculous perception that the Raiders sides he coached "didn't have the cattle". That's absoulte garbage. The squads of that time had plenty of talent.

I loved that story where Gus interviewed him and slowly came to realise... this bloke is nuts.

But great for the game, and will be an entertaining season watching the warriors try and deal with having a spanner for a coach.

I like Elliott, he cracks me up. There was a period from 2007 until mid 2011 where I didnt like him so much.

As others have said he belongs in the media. Even when he was coaching us I got a chuckle out of most of the press conferences.

When we signed him, he and Scurrah tuned up at Radio Sport and boasted about their night out and hangovers. The height of professionalism

This is a very important video, especially cos it applies so well to the Warriors. They sorely lack leadership and to me it looks like both the coach and especially the local players are more concerned about popularity and avoiding conflicts than success.
