It just says that NSW have very few Origin 'must haves'.

They have less than 17 genuine Origin players and probably 100+ blokes at the next level down. So when they try to fill the positions that are 'up in the air' they have a lot of blokes to choose from. Usually they go with whoever currently looks good in a strong team.

They have lacked dominate halves since joey retired. NSW has had plenty of origin players, but they have either been overlooked, played out of position on top of choosing nuffies picked, year in year out.

We didn't even choose Joey regularly when he was on top of his
Game.

Kimmorley got plenty of Runs ahead of him

Selection has been a big problem for us over the years

concur and to add to it there were times when selections were made on the basis of picking someone to defend against whoever. It put qld on the front foot right away.

Fact is that the blues have lacked a genuine ball playing half for a while. Carney found form but for some reason was overlooked for Maloney and not given the benefit that Pearce was when selectors claimed they needed to stick with players.

For me, if blues want to be able to score points that qld they need to start with picking hayne at fb, carney at 6 playing left side and Mullen at 7 on the right. I'd also be looking at a genuine impact player to bring off the bench (Mateo would be my first choice if he's in form). The rest of the side i don't think are a problem where there is plenty of players capable.

Agree Hayne and Carney need to be in the spine, but I'd stick with Pearce at 7. It's fashionable to put shit on him but I reckon he's New South Wales' best halfback after Carney. Plus he's incumbent, which would be meaningless if he was shit, but he's not.

But if we were to arsehole Pearce we should partner Carney with a half who defends well - Mullen, Campese and Sutton are all good options, even though two of those have been (unfairly) thrown on the 'never again' pile.

Every year I want 2 of these 3 picked in our halves (except when Campese is injured). If they have been stamped never again then you are right in saying it is unfair. Mullen was way too young and Campese had 1 game where we lost and somehow he got the blame even though he played a solid game without being spectacular. Pearce has been doing the same thing for years

I also wouldn't mind Hayne at 6 for NSW if they feel they need to accomodate Dugan

I reckon that'd be daft UNLESS Hayne was playing 6 at club level.

What's the point in accommodating a bloke who is yet to play in a winning Origin game?
And what's the point in shuffling our best Origin performed back of the past 10 years? Little surprise we won game 1 this year, and Hayne was a standout from FB.

I also think NSW is getting close to having as many 'standout' Origin candidates as QLD have. It's just a matter of actually picking them first, and filling the team in from there.

Hayne, Jennings, Morris, Hoppa, Carney in the backs
Fifita, Gallen, Bird, Farah, Tamou up front.

Then there are guys like Watmough, Glenn Stewart, even Luke Lewis, who have had very strong performances at Origin level.

If we can get the team on the paddock next year, we should break the drought!

Ugh - Tamou.

Seriously - what is people's obsession with this bloke? He's the size of a small African nation, but runs as hard as two-year old toddler who chases after a loose ball.

Mate, he's pretty good. He doesn't have the punch that some more compact (i.e. shorter) props do, but the height (coupled with his strength) gives him greater leverage with offloads and the defensive wrestle.

Plus he does make a lot of metres and he's athletic so he can play 60 minutes if needed.

Don't get me wrong I would much rather hayne at 1 but the selectors seem to want Dugan there. And if they do pick the dead shit Dugan I reckon hayne provides more value to the team at 6 than he does at wing. He would also offer more than Maloney .

Hayne can play positions 1-6 at a pinch regardless of what he does at parra
