Losing 40-0 to Australia will teach you just as well as losing 82-0, except you'll get people wanting to actually watch you lose next time.

Look at the way Bennett had them approach the first US game. Clearly not playing their top footy, and still won it comfortably. But at least they gave the reporters a headline and a reason to write about it.

Plus they aren't just competing against their opponents, they're competing against their teammates. And competing against themselves, trying to better their last performance. It's the nature of an athlete. And smugly relaxing in every international game, disrespecting opponents would be far more damaging to the competition than a couple if floggings. Playing at their best at least shows respect.
