Good looking team.

Still prefer goodwin or Merritt ahead of Reddy. Sure he scored two tries last game, but anyone could have finished those off.

'All Focus on Warriors' Says Reddy

A A http://www.rabbitohs.com.au/news/_jcr_content/par/newslist_95ce.rss

Despite grabbing two tries last night and helping his side to two competition points, Rabbitohs winger Joel Reddy says there’s no time to waste on congratulating each other as the team prepares to take on the Warriors in Perth.
“It was a good feeling last night, but we’re back on the job today,” said Reddy at the team’s recovery session this morning (Tuesday).
“It was a pretty good win for us – Back in the top-four which is good, but we’ve got a big game against the Warriors this week with a shorter turnaround.
“Personally I was happy with the tries, but there are a lot of things we can work on as a team.
“I think we could’ve been a little better throughout the game – we made a few errors, so hopefully it’s stuff that we can build on for next week.”
The Rabbitohs will fly out to Perth to take on the New Zealand outfit for the second year running at nib Stadium, with Reddy predicting an entertaining match on the back of some talented players.
“Obviously Shaun Johnson and Konrad Hurrell – they’ve got some big players there and they’re playing good footy.
“They’re an entertaining side so we’re going to have to be on our toes.”

The South Sydney Rabbitohs will take on the New Zealand Warriors this Saturday 7 June in round 13 at Perth’s nib Stadium – the Rabbitohs’ Western Australian home. To purchase tickets, please click here.

Luke Keen to Square off With Kiwi Mates in Perth

Issac Luke is looking forward to making the trip to Perth this week to take on his mates in the New Zealand Warriors outfit.
Having played alongside many of his countrymen for the Kiwis in his 29 Tests in the black and white, Saturday night’s match has a little bit of extra feeling for the New Zealander.
“I can’t wait to play against the boys,” laughed Issac.
“I’m really close with a few of them. Ben Matulino’s my best mate so we’ve been texting a bit.
“It’ll be good to get out and obviously do the 80 minutes and be able to catch up with them afterwards.”
Luke also urged Rabbitohs Members and supporters to head out to nib Stadium on Saturday night to create an atmosphere that will rival last year’s sell-out crowd that included plenty of Kiwis.
“We’re just looking forward to going over there and see how many fans we can get over there,” added Luke.
“I know there’s a strong New Zealand base obviously with a lot of my countrymen going over for the mines and all that kind of stuff.
“I know they’ll be at the game supporting the Warriors, so if we can match them, it’s going to be a great atmosphere.”
Luke made a successful return to first grade on Monday night against the Dragons after a lengthy stint on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, making 94 metres with the ball in hand and 20 tackles in a solid first outing.
The Rabbitohs rake played down the success of his return, citing that he simply did as much as he could.
“I pulled up alright – I only got about 50 minutes, but I’m happy with how I went,” said Luke.
“I went out there and tried to do my job and did as much as I could.”

Burgess – Perth Trip a Time to Gel

Words: Tom Skolarikis I Video: Chris Beavon
Thu 5th June, 09:33AM A A
The big trip West to play the Warriors doesn’t faze Rabbitohs lock-forward Sam Burgess, with the big Englishman citing that he and his Rabbitohs teammates will enjoy the time together in what has become an annual event in Perth.

“We actually like getting away together as a group over in Perth,” said Burgess.
“We get there every year now and we actually enjoy the trip over – we fly over there tomorrow (Thursday), spend a couple of days together as a team and we get a session over in Perth.
“So we’ll enjoy that time together and it’ll be great to get together as a team.”
The Rabbitohs have a short turnaround from Monday night’s win to Saturday, but Burgess takes the challenge in his stride.
“Every week’s tough, even if you get a seven day turnaround, it’s pretty tough on the body, but it’s part of the challenge in the NRL.”
Burgess will line up for the first time in the NRL against fellow countryman and England teammate Sam Tomkins – Burgess jokingly adding that he’ll be steering clear of the Warriors fullback after he saw him take on another England teammate against the Bulldogs in the form of James Graham.
“He’s a great kid Sammy,” said Burgess.
“I’m good mates with him off the field, he’s a great competitor – I saw a good little exchange between him and James Graham a couple of weeks ago, so I don’t think I’ll take him on. He looked pretty tough against James Graham.”
Despite the jokes, Burgess says he and his teammates are focussed on improvement this week against the Warriors after coming away with convincing victory’s over St George Illawarra and the Sharks in consecutive weeks.
“Well obviously we’re happy getting the wins,” said Burgess.
“I think we can style find a few ways to get better as a team. I thought with the ball we were a bit shaky in the second half, but showed a bit of resilience there to come through and score a couple of tries at the back-end.
“I think everyone’s looking to improve, but for ourselves, we’re just looking at ways to get better as a team to become more fluid with our attack and defensively just keep working on our system.”

Reynolds on the Attack Ahead of Perth Clash

Words: Tom Skolarikis I Video: Chris Beavon
Thu 5th June, 03:34PM A A

Adam Reynolds this week spoke about the importance of his Rabbitohs’ attack, with the halfback admitting that it’s something the team as a whole has been working on in the lead-up to the trip to Perth.
“It’s something we’ve been working on at training,” said Reynolds.
“It’s not as crisp as we’d like it to be, but it’s something we’re working hard on and things are falling into place.”
Despite currently sitting fourth position on the NRL ladder, as well as coming off their second consecutive win, Reynolds pointed to poor ball-handling as a major killer for his side ahead of this Saturday night’s match.
“When you turn it over (the ball) you can’t score points,” said Reynolds.
“When we give ourselves a chance down the other end, we’re usually coming up with points. I think if we hold onto the ball and build a bit of pressure, we’ll be a lot better.”
The Rabbitohs accounted for St George Illawarra in comprehensive fashion on Monday night by 29-10. But Reynolds admitted that the victory was far from the Rabbitohs’ best performance.
“It still wasn’t our flashest performance – or what we’d like it to be,” admitted Reynolds.
“There are still areas to improve and I think the Warriors are going to be a good challenge for us this week over in Perth.”

Rabbitohs v Warriors preview

Rabbitohs v Warriors
nib Stadium, Perth
Saturday, 9.30pm (AEST)

A quick scan of the positions the Rabbitohs and Warriors occupy on the NRL ladder won’t do justice to just how appetising this clash between them is.

The stats will tell you that South Sydney are flying in fourth, and New Zealand troubled in 12th. But the reality is that two points is all that separates them and that over the past month they have both hit the type of form we expect from them, despite rough starts to 2014.

Sharing a mutual record over the past five weeks of WWLWW, the Bunnies and Warriors sit among the six most in-form sides heading into Round 13.

The team selections reflect that too, with Michael Maguire making just one change to his squad which beat the Dragons 29-10 on Monday night. Nathan Merritt is back down to NSW Cup and Alex Johnston in to start on the wing.

Andrew McFadden has named an identical line-up to that which thrashed the Knights 38-18 at Mt Smart Stadium last Sunday, with youngsters Tuimoala Lolohea and Charlie Gubb named on an extended bench.

The Warriors adjusted their usual travel schedule to allow for an extra day to acclimatise in Perth and will want to forget their two most recent visits to nib Stadium, where they led at half-time only to collapse in the second period and lose.

The Bunnies have won only two of their five home games so far this year and the Western Australian capital is unlikely to offer them too much comfort, with a huge contingent of ex-pat Kiwis tending to make it feel more like a Warriors home match.

Watch Out Rabbitohs: The Warriors’ lethal attack continues to simmer away nicely as combinations gel and their style becomes more fluent. The club’s 50 tries over the opening twelve rounds are the most of any team in the competition. With weapons such as Sam Tomkins, Konrad Hurrell and Shaun Johnson all firing, the Warriors made four line breaks last week and are behind only the Roosters in that category, with 63 so far this season.

Prior to McFadden’s arrival as head coach the Warriors were abysmal on the road this year, conceding an average of 29 points and 32 missed tackles in three away matches. But under their new mentor the New Zealand side is much-improved and in their last four away games have leaked only 15 points, winning two of those matches against the Storm and Titans.

Watch Out Warriors: While the Bunnies looked pretty good with the ball in hand last Monday, it is defence which is the feature of their game right now. Only once this season have they conceded more than 28 points (in Round 4 against the Raiders where they lost 30-18), and they have leaked just 10 in their last 160 minutes of football. South Sydney’s 230 missed tackles also ranks as the lowest in the NRL.

Sam Burgess looks like a man determined to leave his mark on rugby league ahead of his departure to union at the end of the year and is showcasing everything that a coach wants from the modern-day forward. Against the Dragons big Sammy ran for 192 metres off 21 runs, scored a try and clocked up 38 tackles for good measure. He leads the competition in hit-ups and hasn’t had a single sub-100 metre game this season.

Plays To Watch: The Manu Vatuvei high ball proved too tough for the Knights to stop last week and netted two tries for the Warriors at crucial stages of the game. Johnson and Chad Townsend are sure to send plenty of towering kicks his way once again and even if he isn’t able to bring the ball in himself, Vatuvei’s bat-back to a waiting teammate is equally deadly. It is a play the Warriors execute better than any side in the competition.

The Burgess boys, Sam, Thomas, George and Luke, are bad news for opposing teams when they get near the try-line. While their obvious attributes are size and strength, it is their determination to get to the chalk which really sets them apart. They have eight tries between them already this year and their presence will ensure plenty of stress for the Warriors when backed up against their own line.

Where It Will Be Won: The middle will be the key, with two big forward packs full of ball-playing ability going head-to-head. Both sides rolled through weaker opponents last week with relative ease, the Rabbitohs going for 1591 metres and the Warriors 1627. Whichever pack can get over the top of their counterparts and establish dominance will dictate the direction of the game and once they get rolling, both sides can involve their dynamic backlines.

The History: Played 27; Warriors 18, South Sydney 9. The Warriors win 66 per cent of the time against the Rabbitohs, a record which is among the club’s best against fellow NRL sides. But the glory days where the New Zealanders enjoyed a massive 12-game streak against Souths from 1999 to 2007 are over - the last two matches have been won by the Bunnies. These two sides have met in Perth once before, with the Rabbitohs running out 30-13 winners in Round 17 of last year.

What Are The Odds: There’s been twice as much money for the Bunnies in head to head at Sportsbet.com.au, but the Warriors have firmed from $2.95 into $2.75. Nearly three times the interest in Warriors at the line receiving 6.5 start.

Match Officials: Referee – Jared Maxwell; Assistant Referee – Dave Munro; Touch Judges – Brett Suttor & Luke Potter; Video Referees – Steve Clark & Matt Rodwell.

Televised: Fox Sports 1 – Live 9.30pm (AEST).

The Way We See It: There are few more beautiful sights in rugby league than watching two big-angry forward packs go at each other for 80 minutes and that in itself is reason enough to watch this match. They are two sides in good form and at a neutral venue, which means it is always going to be hard to pick. The Warriors face a seven-hour trip to Perth and history shows that tends to take a toll late in the game. Combine that with the class Souths showed in their last outing and the scales tilt slightly in the Bunnies’ favour. Rabbitohs by four.

Sam Burgess lives in the present to provide South Sydney purpose

League News South Sydney Rabbitohs

Sports reporter & Video journalist

Focused: Sam Burgess says he is only thinking of the Rabbitohs at the moment.

South Sydney forward Sam Burgess makes it clear he is focused on seeing his job through for the Rabbitohs, despite the excitement of the challenge that awaits him to make next year's England rugby union World Cup squad.
Souths play the Warriors in Perth on Saturday night and while Burgess has signed a lucrative deal to join English rugby powerhouse Bath – and teammate Ben Te'o announced on Tuesday that despite not knowing where he was headed he wouldn't be at Redfern next year – the enforcer insisted professional pride ensured his commitment to Souths.
"The excitement of what we're doing right now, it's pretty easy for me; pretty easy for Ben once things clear up for him," Burgess said of remaining focused.
"We have the excitement of what's going on for the moment, and the moment you stop thinking about the job at hand, that's when you get burnt. We as a group have got to stay strong, stay focused on us rather than what's happening next year or two years' time because, really, that counts for nothing.
"Next year will be a different group of players starting on another journey, but for now we are who we are – we've got who we've got and we've got to make the most of it. I think that's the mindset we have as a team."
Burgess, who said he strived to learn and to improve, should have his job of making the hard yards made a little easier following Issac Luke's impressive return from the shoulder injury he suffered in round three.
The 25-year-old prop provided an insight into the importance he placed on the combination he and the Kiwi international had forged over the past four seasons.
"Issac's a phenomenal player," Burgess said. "I think I said back in 2010 he's one of the best players I've ever played with and that statement's not changed since.
"He's just a natural footballer. He knows how to square the line up; he knows when to make the right decision with the ball and he's a fierce defender.
"I'm happy he's back in the team because, personally, we have a good connection on the field, and, for the team, I think he brings a new dimension."
Luke, who rejected an offer to join the Warriors to remain at Souths until 2017, expected the forwards who formed the backbone of the Auckland-based team would ensure a physical challenge.
"They are obviously one of the top teams that are going to compete in each set, we're going to have to really muscle up in the middle to control their forwards – their forwards are massive," he said.
"It's going to be a massive test this week over in Perth where there's more Kiwi-based fans than Australian."
Halfback Adam Reynolds said it was essential the equal-fourth-placed Rabbitohs improved upon last Monday night's effort to defeat St George Illawarra 29-10. While he welcomed the victory, Reynolds said it was a far from perfect 80 minutes.
"We're still down on completions," he said. "I think we completed 59 or 60 per cent in the second half. If we can clean that bit up and build pressure on teams, I think it's going to go a long way to winning more games."

Excitement Builds in Perth After Open Training Session

Fri 6th June, 09:18PM A A

Hundreds of Western Australian Rabbitohs and rugby league Members and support flocked to nib Stadium this evening (Friday) to see their heroes in action a day early, as the side took to the pitch to prepare for Saturday’s blockbuster against the New Zealand Warriors in Perth.
Those in attendance got an up-close look at the current crop of Rabbitohs, including the likes of Queensland Origin players Greg Inglis, Chris McQueen and Ben Te’o as Head Coach Michael Maguire put the side through its paces.
For local Rabbitohs and WA Members such as Peter Butterworth, the afternoon was a rare opportunity to see his heroes up close in Perth – a long way from Redfern.
“I’m originally from Sydney, but have been here in Perth nearly 20 years,” said Peter.
“It’s actually a bit surreal to have the boys here – we don’t get too many opportunities to watch live NRL here, so when it’s your team, it makes it even sweeter.”
With a ground-record crowd in attendance for the corresponding 2013 clash at nib Stadium, Peter added that the atmosphere at the ground will be electric come kick-off tomorrow night.
“It was an amazing atmosphere last year,” said Peter.
“I couldn’t believe how many rugby league fans there were here, and I think it's only going to get bigger this year."

Rapid-fire Rabbits enjoying points blitz

By Dan Walsh, Staff Writer

South Sydney may have one of the stingiest defences in the league, but they're fast earning a reputation as the rapid-fire Rabbits when it comes to putting points on opposing sides.

The Bunnies have made an impressive run up the competition ladder in recent weeks on the back of four wins from their past five starts, in which they've scored 20 tries in victories over the Dragons, Sharks, Titans and Broncos.

And each of those wins have been built on an ability to make hay in the briefest periods of sunshine, with their first three tries against the Dragons last Monday night blowing out a 0-0 deadlock after 22 minutes to an 18-0 advantage in just 11 minutes, before two more tries in four minutes midway through the second half put a wrap on the comfortable 29-10 win.

Against the Sharks it was two tries between the 55th and 62nd minutes that sealed the deal, while the wins north of the border over the Titans and Broncos were founded on hare-footed starts from Michael Maguire's men, with four and three tries within the first 15 minutes respectively.

Offensive general Adam Reynolds says the Rabbitohs' ability to land a flurry of try-scoring punches is not something that's focused on specifically at Redfern, but rather that it stems from the simplest of rugby league adages: holding onto the pill.

Watch the NRL LIVE with a 2-week free trial.
"It's when we control the ball, that's when we get a roll-on," says Reynolds.

"When we turn it over we can't score points, but when we give ourselves a chance down the other end we're usually coming up with points.

"[Our attack's] something we've been working on at training.
"It's not as crisp as we'd like it to be but it's something we're working hard on. Things are falling into place and it's starting to come."

Ahead of this week's clash with the Warriors in Perth, the Rabbitohs are well aware the New Zealand-based side is one outfit they do not want to get into a point-scoring shoot-out with. The Warriors have racked up 270 points in their 12 games this year, making them the competition's second most potent attacking side alongside the Roosters in averaging 22.5 points a game.

Key to the Warriors' offensive prowess has been the form of England international Sam Tomkins, who after a slow start to his NRL career has now found his feet with 10 line break assists (equal fourth best in the competition) and 46 tackle breaks (seventh best) highlighting his contribution as he chimes into the Warriors' backline. Fellow British import Sam Burgess says he looking forward to lining up against his countryman for the first time at NRL level.

“He’s a great kid Sammy,” says Burgess. “I’m good mates with him off the field, he’s a great competitor – I saw a good little exchange between him and James Graham a couple of weeks ago, so I don’t think I’ll take him on. He looked pretty tough against James Graham.”

I'm happy for Sammy, he copped a bit of criticism, a bit of flack [when he first arrived in the NRL] but he's in some form and we're certainly aware of what he can bring to their team and we'll have to do our homework on him this week."

True Grit – Rabbitohs Trump Warriors

The South Sydney Rabbitohs have recorded a gutsy victory against the New Zealand Warriors in Perth this evening (Saturday), defying a strong Warriors line-up and a mounting injury toll to take the points by 34-18.
In a match that will be remembered for the display of sheer guts and determination from the Rabbitohs perspective – as well as the ground record 20,267 crowd – the Rabbitohs lost the services of Greg Inglis and Bryson Goodwin for the night, while also momentarily losing Jason Clark and George Burgess, forcing a re-shuffle in Michael Maguire’s side that ultimately stood to defeat the New Zealanders after the visitors led at half time.
The Warriors were the first to draw blood, when winger David Fusitu’a got on the outside of the Rabbitohs’ defensive line before skilfully managing to stay within the field of play to plant the ball over the line despite the best efforts of John Sutton.
From the ensuing set, Warriors front-rower Suaia Matagi broke clean through the Rabbitohs line before drawing in Greg Inglis and passing on to Shaun Johnson who raced over to score. Johnson converted his own try to make it ten points in nine minutes.
A Manu Vatuvei error on a high ball inside his own 10 metres allowed the Rabbitohs their first real attacking opportunity with 15 minutes gone, but while John Sutton was valiant in his effort to power through the Warriors defensive line, his ball handling robbed him of the four points.
After being outplayed in the opening stages of the match though, the Rabbitohs’ composure got them back into the match when after a string of repeat-sets on the Warriors line, Dylan Walker danced his way through from short range to open the red and green account for the night. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 10-6 in the Warriors’ favour.
The Rabbitohs continued to build pressure, and with a minute and a half left in the first half, Bryson Goodwin took a kick just before the in-goal to almost score. But the Perth product’s arm was deemed to have gone out before he could plant the ball.
Souths fans collectively held their breaths as Greg Inglis left the field on the ensuing set with a leg injury after the Rabbitoh’s attempted tackle on Manu Vatuvei – rounding out the first half.
The Rabbitohs’ injury woes continued on the resumption, when Bryson Goodwin – who had shifted to fullback to cover the loss of Inglis – left the field after his arm was caught awkwardly in a tackle. The injury caused a major re-shuffle of the Rabbitohs’ line-up, with Chris McQueen shifting out to the wing, Kyle Turner moving into the centres and Dylan Walker to fullback.
The effects of the reshuffle showed immediately when Warriors skipper Simon Mannering crossed out wide to make it 14-6.
Despite the growing injury toll, Dylan Walker again danced through the Warriors defence, this time racing an extra 20 minutes and stepping to score under the posts for his second of the night. Reynolds added the extras to make it 14-12 in the Warriors’ favour.
The Rabbitohs continued to gather pace, with the ensuing attacking raids allowing Kyle Turner to barge over from next to the touch-line to take the lead for the Rabbitohs for the first time in the night at 16-14.
With 11 minutes left, a deft pass from Issac Luke to Dave Tyrrell put resident Superman Dave Tyrrell through for his first four-pointer of the season under the sticks. Adam Reynolds converted to make it 22-14.
But anyone who thought there would be any let-up from the men in red and green were about to be proved wrong again, when the Rabbitohs went on the attack through an Adam Reynolds cross-field kick that landed in the hands of Joel Reddy who stepped through to score – all but defeating the Warriors psychologically. Reynolds made no mistake with six minutes remaining at 28-14.
Dave Tyrrell then bagged a rare try-scoring double inside the last four minutes before Adam Reynolds added the extras to make it 34-14.
A late try to Konrad Hurrell was too little too late for the Warriors – the Rabbitohs recording a famous victory.

Rabbitohs 34 (Dylan Walker 2, Kyle Turner, Dave Tyrrell 2, Joel Reddy, tries; Adam Reynolds 5 goals)
Defeated
Warriors 18 (David Fusitu’a, Shaun Johnson, Simon Mannering, Konrad Hurrell, tries; Shaun Johnson 1 goals)
