Thurston had a run there for while where he was getting into all sorts of shit. Various off field stuff that he never seemed get in much trouble for (the Southern rumours, something at Jupiters, few other things).

Benji was the ultimate protected species though. Punched on in the off season regularly, made the papers, never got in any shit for it

Haha.. what one incident means regular ?

He got into a dust up twice in the space of about 12 months. One at maccas and another in some country pub during a trial game I believe.

Both were justified because the other bloke called him names

Yeah but you know, they did build the game in this country. It hasn't been all smooth sailing but if we're going to protect anything in the game it might as well be those that created the altar before which the likes of Brisbane and Melbourne (and perhaps Perth one day) kneel.

Hang on, there's been decent competitions in Queensland AND New Zealand in the past - the only reason the NRL has become an outgrowth of the old NSW (read: Sydney) competition is due to the power imbalance caused by funds derived from leagues clubs (read: pokies) for a critical few decades.

Just because circumstances have resulted in the national competition being built on the base of an old suburban competition, that doesn't justify over-saturation in one market at the expense of progressing the game as a whole.

Video Referees.

The only position which, in order to remain employed, requires less correct interpretations of the evidence presented than the average 6 o'clock news weather forecast presenter.

Every team that ever wins a game or player whom avoids a suspension is a protected species.

In a similar vein, any team that loses a game are chokers. And any team that loses a game heavily is 'finished' for the season.
