Is Hayne our Trojan Horse into the US?

Interesting comments from Colin Scotts yesterday in regard to Hayne, he believes the NRL will never have had this sort of exposure before in the US.

Could it be that this could be the thing that brings Rugby League into the US, and if so should the NRL and RFL be trying to jump on its coattails and get in there next year with some sort of promotional game. Maybe get Russel to take the Bunnies over there again for an Exhibition.

This is similar to Marcus Ambrose going to Nascar, they started paying attention to the V8 Supercars once he was there and even sent their main commentators over a couple of years ago to cover Bathurst. Next year one of the biggest teams in world motorsport Penske Racing will be competing in V8 Supercars with Ambrose as their driver.

I've seen 2-3 US news items about Hayne's move, every single one of them have referred to him as an "Australia Rugby player".

So...probably not. If he goes well then maybe, but I don't expect him to be a big enough blip on the radar for it to matter.

Wasn't one of the original plans for Rugby League in the US to pick up college footballers who were not going to make it, basically give them another avenue into professional sport (all be it at a lower level). Just because they couldn't cut it in College Football doesn't mean they're not great athletes.

You are right. Same thing happened for our superbike riders when Gardner made a big splash in that sport, opening the door for others and raising the profile of the sport here. As you point out the impact Ambrose had is massive as well. Mark Webber similarly turned the spotlight on aussie racers and now Ricciardo is reinforcing that focus.

Thing is, blokes like Ambrose and Hayne aren't thanked for their efforts in their own insular sports. There are a lot of parallels - Ambrose left at the top of his game and had to prove himself. He had to back himself and he did it. Hayne has started on a similar path and should be applauded for it.

Stupid comparison. Beckham to US is like a Wallaby going to Japan to cash in.

Hayne going to NFL is almost without precedent. Ambrose to NASCAR or Mansell to Indycar are the better comparisons. And they were big, ongoing stories and big success stories. Jim Clark to the Indy 500 or Brabham to Indy 500 are more applicable than a soccer player at the end of his career milking soccer in another country.
