Trade up or down ... stay put? Jerry Jones hints at what Cowboys might do in first round

IRVING – Jerry Jones made it clear Tuesday. Sure, he ultimately has “triumph privileges” in the Cowboys’ war room. But that’s not exactly how the club’s system for drafting a player works.

The Cowboys owner and general manager will certainly still have final say on whom the club drafts in the first round Thursday, but it’s become clear he’s listening more and more to those around him.

Jones will be flanked in the Cowboys' draft room at Valley Ranch by coach Jason Garrett and Jones’ son, executive vice president Stephen Jones. Also, assistant director of player personnel Will McClay will be in arm’s reach.

That combination helped influence Jones to pass on Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel in the first round of last year’s draft.

“I think the day I came in this building and said what my management style would be, it’s been the same way, same draft protocol or same draft room decision-making as the first draft I was in,” Jones said. “That hasn’t changed. There’s a lot made and always has been a lot made of … let’s use this as example. ‘Who is it that makes the call?’ Well, it’s been an organizational decision since the day we got here.”

After a 12-4 season last year, the Cowboys will draft 27th overall Thursday. Though it’s hard to believe anyone making public statements this close to the draft, Jones dropped some hints Tuesday as to what Dallas might do with its first-round pick:

Picking so late in the first round, Jerry Jones said, increases the chances Dallas will trade up or down. Jerry Jones indicated that trading down was more likely. “We would like to enhance it if the opportunity were there to do it. It is very possible for us to trade down and get a shot at a higher level of second-round pick.”

Despite the Cowboys not re-signing league leading rusher DeMarco Murray, Jerry Jones said drafting a running back is “not urgent.” He added the Cowboys don’t have that “as a must.”

So what do the Cowboys have as a must out of this draft?

“We do need to help the defense as a must,” Jerry Jones said, “by hook or crook.”

Cornerback and defensive end top the list of the Cowboys’ defensive needs.
Jerry Jones said it’s “highly unlikely” the Cowboys would trade draft picks for a veteran player at this time of year. “Everybody wants draft picks over the next three days,” he added. “Draft picks are enhanced. Players’ values are diminished.”

Garrett said the Cowboys look at players with character red flags and/or criminal histories on a case-by-case basis.

Jerry Jones was so adamant about explaining how the Cowboys’ draft process works that he used 882 words and more than six minutes to detail how the club arrives at a final decision when on the clock.

“Bottom line, Stephen has absolute, tremendous influence on these decisions,” Jerry Jones said. “Jason has much influence, every bit as much and more than many of anybody that has ever coached this football team on what we are doing. It would be madness for two people to work as hard as these guys do not to get in and be influenced by what they are telling you. They are not bashful about getting in my ear. And sometimes they don’t mince words.”

That’s exactly what played out a year ago when Jerry Jones had to be talked out of pulling the trigger on the Aggies’ quarterback who was in a freefall on draft boards.

Jerry Jones clearly showed a year ago that he hasn’t lost his flair for adding the wow factor to the draft.

“We look to each other,” Jones said, “and you did see last year that I basically listened, listened, listened and made a different decision than I might have made on my own.”

Stephen Jones said this will be his 26th draft and his role in the war room hasn’t changed.

“Everybody has their way of influencing,” Stephen Jones said. “At the end of the day, Jerry makes the final decision, but very rarely does it come to a point where there’s a disagreement. Ultimately, there’s a consensus and it’s one we usually feel very good about.”

That’s no different with the process of getting to that consensus

You could well be right.

Some suggestion that the Cowboys may trade up or down. If they do then that throws both our plans out the window. But regardless it's fun to do mock drafts.

My take on the Cowboys Draft

1st Byron Jones CB/FS, Connecticut, 6-1 & 200 lbs
My Rating: A-
Where he fits: A lot depends on what the Cowboys do with Carr. But regardless with his versatility will get plenty of playing time.

2nd Randy Gregory, DE/OLB, Nebraska, 6-5 & 235 lbs
My rating: B-
Where he fits: Undersized to be a defensive end, but that’s where he will play. Cowboys will move him around to create mismatches. In my opinion will start of as a situational pass rusher. Needs to build up in size to handle the pounding he will receive.

3rd Chaz Green, OT, Florida, 6-5 & 315 lbs
My rating: C
Where he fits: In the short term will be looked at as back up for starting tackles, Smith and Free. While in the long term could be looked at as a future starter replacing Free at right tackle.

4th Damien Wilson, LB, Minnesota, 6-0 & 245 lbs
My rating: C+
Where he fits: I like this pick because he is a perfect fit for the Cowboys fast flowing scheme. Will be a backup middlebacker. But needs to find a spot on special teams to make final roster.

5th Ryan Russell, DE, Purdue, 6-4 & 270 lbs
My Rating: C-
Where he fits: Will add depth to the position. Depending on how they use Gregory could find some playing time. Not a great sack artist.

7th Mark Nzeocha, LB, Wyoming, 6-2 & 232 lbs
My rating: C+
Where he fits: My favourite player in the draft. Very happy to see the Cowboys drafted him. Will be a special teams demon to start with, then could develop in to a solid starter.

7th Laurenece Gibson, OT, Virginia Tech, 6-6 & 305 lbs
My rating: C+
Where he fits: Interesting pick when you consider they took Green in the third round. A lot to like about him. Very good athlete and I love his long arms. Not sure they will keep both him and Green. Gibson could end up on the practise squad

7th Geoff Swaim, TE/H-Back/FB, Texas, 6-4 & 250 lbs
My rating: D+
Where he fits in: Cowboys gave up a 6th round pick next year for this selection. Does not fill a need. Pass receiving is not his game. Best known for his blocking, which he excelled at. Will join Witten, Escobar and Hanna as tight ends on the Cowboys roster. Could push Hanna for a position. Maybe looked at as a H-back or even a FB. More than likely will find a spot on the practise squad.

If you are keen take a look at this video of him play. He can certainly block.

Be interesting to see if a really good O-Line can make up for having running backs which are garbage.

They are essentially the reverse Buffalo

THREE NUMBER ONE DRAFT PICKS......for the price of ONE. Dallas is about to win another 3 Superbowls in a row while the Redskins watch on their big screen TV's while eating their milk and cookies at home.

Collins might make up for the fact your first round corner can jump out of the gym but can't play, and your second round pass rusher wasn't even on teams boards he's got so many problems!

Geez talk about a blind hater

Jones is a very good prospect both on tape and based on physical measurables

Jealous are you?

Seriously this off-season has turned out magically for the Cowboys. Let's hope the magic doesn't fade away come season time.
