This is shit if true. Surely 9 can only on-sell an FTA game with the NRL's approval? They went to great lengths to get the 4th deal on FTA for Saturday and this would be a big step backwards.

But I see the AFL broadcast deal has been revised down to $2.2b lol...so perhaps way wide of the mark.

6pm Friday not too bad, even a bit kid friendly for Sydney suburban grounds? And a great idea for pubs.

So wait, back to three games on FTA a week? Or are both Sunday games on Nine?

Because the 4th game on FTA was really a good move, and this sounds kind of shitty.

Massoud reckons faux would pay nein 40mil for the sat game.

under the FTA deal with Nine they can't sell games to fox, they have to sell it back to the NRL and then the NRL sell it to fox.

There's something big missing from the picture imo, the NRL already have 925m, why would they undo it all and give fox everything to get to only 1.5bn? They would effectively be selling their paytv rights for only $115m a year, the same as we are getting now. The money being talked about is well short of the mark imo.

I wont be surprised if Fox do end up with an exclusive Saturday roster, though 4 FTA games seems certainty so itd have to become a Sunday double header (Monday will never happen, no matter how much they bitch).

This "6pm Friday" rumour is absolute bullshit. It may be part of an offer Fox is making to the ARLC, but its not something that will ever be accepted.

And this suggestion that bending over oin this way will only net the NRL $1.7ishB is beyond ridiculous. The NRL could probably hit the $1.7b mark by selling all games on FTA. If Fox expect to hoard games and sell packages at $100 a month, the will need to do a bit better.

Very strategic leak. Interesting it was given to Seven.

Most likely designed to test the waters and/or place pressure on the NRL.

6pm is beyond dumb. No one will get to the games because of commutes - M4 to Homebush is horrific at the best of times let alone on a Friday at 6pm. TV audience will be low as well.

Don't see what purpose it serves

the numbers being talked about in that wilson article are so bs, why would the NRL sell basically everything to fox for only $800m, $125m less than they would get from Nine under the 925m FTA deal?

makes absolutely no sense.

Just when you thought the NRL had fox sports by the balls someone goes and proposes Friday 6pm and gives them back exclusive Saturday?! Wtf?

Surely Sunday night would've been much better?

love how News Corp make out that they are 'giving up' MNF, pretty sure the NRL already took it off you!

Until the NRL announce it, take the whole thing with a grain of salt, rothfield came out with an back page exclusive like this earlier in the year only for the NRL to come out & announce the deal with Nine and rothfield was left holding his dick.

It's a Fox leak to test the waters IMO, there's no way this is a NRL idea.

(No doubt I'll be proved wrong and it'll be announced tomorrow...:sarcasm:)

I said this in part 1 thread, they could probably play a handful of fri 6pm games and the rest sunday nights, and the fri 6pm games could be played in nz, which would at least help crowds and boost the value of the NZ deal.

rothfield has now chimed in with an article talking as if it's a done deal,

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sp...-every-game-live/story-fnp0lyn3-1227603788576

NRL fans could get a smorgasbord of eight live television games under a revamped proposal for Channel Nine and Fox Sports to share a $1.8 billion broadcasting deal.

Fox Sports would show every game live — three of them simulcast with Channel Nine — including a proposed new Friday night timeslot at 6pm.

The 6pm game would replace Monday night football.

NRL sources revealed the new schedule could come into play as early as next season if the independent commission can finalise the broadcasting deal by the end of next week.

It will be the first time in history that fans will get the chance to see every game live.

DOING THE DEAL

The day it was reported on the back page of this newspaper that former CEO Dave Smith had packed up his offices a month early was the trigger for a resumption in negotiations.

While he was still at Moore Park headquarters, there was a reluctance among TV executives to even talk, let alone finalise a deal.

At Channel Nine, departing CEO David Gyngell was always happy to give up Saturday nights.

He only bought the prime time spot as a tactical move to stop one of his rival free-to-air networks from getting a share of the rights.

He always knew Fox Sports would buy it back to protect their Super Saturday brand.

FRIDAY NIGHTS

The proposal for a new 6pm kick-off timeslot is a huge gamble.

It will work well out of New Zealand with 8pm kick-offs in Auckland but Sydney clubs would face a battle to get fans through the gates at the end of a work day.

No doubt the clubs would want some form of compensation.

There is also the problem of worker getting home in time to watch the game on TV.

Still, anything is better than having to sit up until midnight to watch an advertisement-filled and delayed second Friday night game on Channel Nine like we have had in recent years.

NRL v AFL

The battle between the AFL and NRL will finish close enough to a draw.

The AFL got more cash — $2.5 billion but over six years that averages out at $416 million a season.

But they have an extra match each week and their games go for around 45 minutes longer.

The NRL could get $1.8 billion over five years at $360 million a season.

THE CLUBS

The deal should ensure the long-term future of all 16 clubs from extra funding of around $3 million a year each.

The clubs are currently negotiating with the NRL to get grants of $2 million more than the salary cap to end years of running at losses.

One chairman told The Daily Telegraph: “No one will sign the participation agreements until this TV deal is locked in and we get our share of it. The sooner that happens the better.”

The extra money will help compensate the clubs for a predicted fall in gate takings because every game will be shown live on television.
