Contracts
Each team has a total of sixty-five 'years' worth of contracts to offer their players, and these 'years' have to be split between the players on your roster. This means you can contract players for any number of years you'd like (up to a maximum of five years), but you need to ensure that the sixty-five points cover your entire squad.
Remember, you must have a minimum of 20 players in your squad, and a maximum of 29 players.
Example Mount Disappointment Contracts 2016.

As you can see, the players in my squad have been split up into different contract lengths. At the end of year one, the eleven players listed on one-year contracts would automatically become off-contract. The two-year deals would become one year, the threes would become twos, and so on. This would, obviously, cause a recalculation in the number of years you had available to 'spend'.
UPGRADING CONTRACTS
Firstly, a club's number of contract extensions depends on where the finish. Minor Premiers, Premiers, and Wooden Spooners all receive a bonus extension. Every other club is entitled to three extensions.
A side that claims both the Major and Minor Premiership is entitled to 5 extensions.
All other clubs will receive three extensions per season.
After this, it's simply a matter of deciding how long you wish to extend the player's contract. 

1 Year - +15% of original salary
2 years - +20% of original salary
3 years - +25% of original salary
4+ years - +30% of original salary
As an example, Dylan Walker has a salary of $200,000. If I were to extend his contract by a further season, it would be base + 15%. His salary for that extended year would be $230,000. Two further seasons and hed be worth $240,00 per season.
