Corey Norman has agreed to a more than $2.2 million three-year deal to remain at the Eels, and the club will now turn their attention to capturing Jarryd Hayne too.

The Sunday Telegraph understands Eels management will meet with Hayne’s representatives in the coming days to gauge their former captain’s interest in returning to the club.

The Gold Coast Titans are expected to make a rich pitch for Hayne, while St George Illawarra will also pursue him after missing out on Norman.

The Eels finally have some clarity surrounding their salary cap for next season, after finalising Kieran Foran’s release on Friday.

They are also awaiting clearance from the NRL if they are able to spend the full $7.1 million dollar salary cap next season.

Foran’s early exit from the club will free about $1 million from their salary cap.

While Norman has received a significant upgrade, the Eels still have the freedom to land a marquee player next season.

While Hayne toys with the idea of playing rugby union in France, there is interest from the Eels in bringing Hayne home.

The Eels are without a fullback with veteran Michael Gordon switching to the Roosters next season, while Hayne could also make a shift to the halves to partner Norman.

Norman’s re-signing was seen as pivotal for the Eels, following Foran’s departure. The five-eighth is suspended until the end of the season, and fined $20,000, for various off-field incidents.

Norman’s indiscretions include; his conviction of drug possession, a police warning for consorting with criminals, filming incidents involving apparent drug use and sexual activity plus distributing the video to other NRL players.

Foran is expected to have accepted a $150,000 pay out to end his troubled nine game stint at the club. Despite their troubled 2016 season, the Eels will still field a strong squad next year.

Their depth will be tested after Nathan Peats and Junior Paulo were squeezed out because of salary cap constraints while Anthony Watmough has retired because of injury.

The club is expected to add Manly prop Siosaia Vave to the squad next year.

Meanwhile, Parramatta’s new board — headed by Max Donnelly — has wasted little time in trying to turn around the club’s troubled front office.

The search has officially begun to find a new chief executive and a head of commercial.

The board’s first appointment is expected to be finding a replacement for Daniel Anderson as a head of football.

Coach Brad Arthur is likely to select the club’s new head of football within weeks.

BA chooses the head of football?

I wouldn't think that's how the process works...

So Norman got suspended for 8 weeks and fined, but that somehow increased his offer from us from around $650k to $730k? Happy to see him retained, we need to build our team around him now.

I think the Dragons offer is what caused us to increase our offer.

MORE DRAMA AT EELS

The drama continues at the Parramatta Eels, this time on Brad Arthur’s coaching staff.

Highly regard strength and conditioning coach Paul Devlin was given his marching orders last week after telling Arthur he had signed a contract to join Michael Maguire at the Rabbitohs.

It’s a sign the Rabbitohs concede there is a problem with their fitness this year.

Arthur’s assistant coach Peter Gentle has also been in hospital for two weeks with pneumonia.

EELS CAN STILL WIN

The NRL has ruled that Parramatta Eels players can win individual Dally M Awards this year, despite the fact they played with a team over the salary cap in the first nine rounds.

Not that it’s likely to cause any controversy because the only player in contention for an award would be winger Bevan French as a rookie of the year.

Semi Radradra’s knee injury ruined his chances for winger of the year.

The NRL says a precedent was set in 2010 when Melbourne Storm players were eligible for awards despite the proven salary cap rorting.

JARRYD Hayne will need to meet with the NRL’s integrity unit to answer questions about how much knowledge he had of Parramatta’s salary cap cheating before he returns to the NRL.

The Sunday Telegraph understands Hayne will not be registered by any club until he fronts the NRL should he make a rugby league comeback next year.

NRL sources said Hayne was likely to be quizzed by the integrity unit before a contract was registered.

“The integrity unit would want to ascertain whether he was aware of any undeclared third party payments,” the source said.

“We are very keen for him to return to the NRL but we need to ensure he was not knowingly involved in the salary cap breaches at Parramatta.”

The NRL want to know if Hayne received cash or any other undeclared payments from the Eels. The Daily Telegraph revealed in May that the Eels had secretly arranged almost $500,000 in deals for Hayne since 2013.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing by Hayne.

Documents revealed Hayne received cash payments, first class overseas travel and car expenses — adding up to $465,000 between 2013 to 2015. The documents show Hayne was guaranteed $15,000 in 2013, $225,000 in 2014 and $225,000 in 2015.

The NRL’s integrity unit will shift its focus to determining how much, if anything, players knew about Parramatta’s salary cap cheating shortly.

But first, the NRL will complete its investigation into player agents and if they were complicate in helping Parramatta cheat the salary cap.

The NRL’s head of integrity, Nick Weeks, will compile a report for the agents accreditation scheme within weeks.

The scheme will make a final decision on possible sanctions to player managers.

I presume Foran will need to be interviewed also in regard to, among other things, whether he knew about any dodgy TPAs he might have recieved, as The Plane apparently needs to be?

Will the integrity unit investigate the referees? There have been some very questionable decisions in most games this year....

f**k chasing Hayne... now that we have apparently confirmed Norman for next year, we need to find a quality relacement for the loss of Peats first, before worrying about signing a two-years out fullback/possible five-eighth experiment.

Weekes: You know anything about these dodgy payments?

Hayne: No mate.

Weekes: Righto. So do you have a Roosters, Bulldogs, Broncos or Cowboys contract that you want me to clear?

That's true, but BA choosing the head of football? Can he choose a kindly but part senile relo?
Yeah that seems odd. From a fan's point of view, where we see Arthur as the saviour, it makes sense that he should get whatever he wants, including choosing his own boss (if that is indeed the relationship between the positions). But it doesn't strike me as the way a dispassionate professional like Mad Max Donnelly would operate.

Maybe the journo got mixed up, and Max really wants to appoint Arthur as our new Footy CEO, and then Arthur can recommend to the Board his choice of our next coach...?
