While 11 NRL clubs have declined offers to play in the World Club Series in February next year, the Dragons are still open to making the trip.

Sporting News columnist Dean ‘Bulldog’ Richie reports in the Daily Telegraph that the Eels, Knights, Rabbitohs, Sea Eagles, Storm, Raiders, Broncos, Cowboys, Bulldogs, Panthers and Titans have all rejected a $400,000 offer to appear in the annual two-match series.

The 2016 series saw the Cowboys beat Leeds, while the Broncos and Dragons defeated Wigan and St Helens respectively.

With a packed pre-season and the Auckland Nines to start 2017, clubs from Down Under are reluctant to make the long trip.

Except for the Dragons, who are still keen on the pay-day.

“We are locked into 2017, not thinking we would encounter such a circumstance,’’ Dragons CEO Peter Doust told News Corp.

“We would love to go and have always seen it as fantastic for the brand of the Dragons overseas, because we are well-known overseas. It’s a great opportunity to propagate the game.

“We were very much involved in the original expansion of the World Club Challenge.

“We are contracted into arrangements like most clubs are for 2017, but I would still consider it if it was in the interests of the game and see what arrangements we could come to.

“It puts our club brand in the international market.”

With fans unhappy at the reappointment of coach Paul McGregor – and a host of other off-field issues – it will be interesting to see how Doust’s stance goes down in Dragons territory.

Do you think this may appeal to someone to join the club? A trip to the UK? You never know.....Clutching at straws.

They should play the game, get the 400k give it to Mary and say see ya later alligator. All whilst JD has taken over and has had thewhole off season to prepare the team

" Its a great opportunity to propagate the game " -

Now that scares me , and so too should the Chairman of the E.S.L. ,does Doust mean , that he wants to show the Poms that they also , may
have a Club as well run as the Dragons ?

To sow the seeds of our success to our distant Northern cousins , Lord forbid .
It would set their game back for decades !

1.5mill and its worth discussing..but 400k...really that desperate?

I remember last preseason preparation. Mary saying how happy he was with the team, great depth in all positions & how they were concentrating more on their attacking structures.
Well that really worked out terrific. Therefore Imo, take the money on offer
Cant do any more damage, Preseason with Mary - waste of time.

Interestingly the seven other finalists from this year (Cronulla have to go), who would all consider themselves contenders next season have said No.

Funny thing is Saints may win in the WCC. That will be an embarrassment for the ESL if a team with the worst attack can beat one of the best teams in England.

Do you get a trophy? And if so did Saints get one last time?

If Mary wins he will gloat that he has provided some silverware with 2 WCC trophies. On top opf his 2 Anzac games against the chooks.
