Media Release, NRL

The ARL Commission and NRL clubs today signed a binding agreement which will secure the long term funding of the clubs.

The two parties also agreed to expedite a review of the constitution.

ARL Chairman John Grant and Club Chairs representative Bart Campbell said the agreement was a breakthrough for the future of the game.

They said both parties had changed their original proposals and worked collaboratively to reach the agreement.

"Under this agreement, the clubs will have the long term financial security they have been seeking," Mr Grant said.

Mr Grant said the package included:

o A significant increase in club payments in the next five year cycle

o A special fund set up to assist financially distressed clubs

o A 65 per cent increase in funding for grassroots rugby league

Mr Campbell said the agreement would ensure that the game was strong at every level – from grassroots through to the elite.

"The clubs and Commission have a common goal – to make Rugby League as strong as possible into the future," he said.

"This agreement delivers the funds needed to achieve that target."

Today's meeting also determined that Mr Grant should continue as Chairman of the ARLC.

Today's EGM has now been postponed until March 1 to enable further negotiations on the non-funding issues to proceed.

Gone from $130mill to around $50mill for grass roots.
Clubs get bail out safety net with no responsibility
and they are so embarrassed on their backflip they won't say what the funding model is for the club grants,

But hey Grant got to keep his cushy job so not all bad!

Sounds about right. The clubs have too much rather than too little power.

Couldnt your hero Grant have stood up to them, even if it cost him his job?

Seems all he is worrying about his saving himself...

What do you expect from him in the next 12 months... More suckholing of the clubs?

Wonder what this means for the much heralded second tier, with $80mill less in the budget for grass roots the plans must be back to square one.

As I said he is at a hiding to none. Doesn't matter what he did he was going to get attacked.

Perth Red- the extra money for the clubs was always going to come from the grassroots. Why are you surprised? That needs to fall on the greed of the clubs, Not the Nrl. The Nrl wanted the money to go to grassroots but the clubs demanded it instead.

where are you pulling this figure from?

Current grass roots funding is $30mill
They promised an extra $100mill
=$130mill

They are now promising an extra 65%
65% of $30mill is $19.5mill
Plus the current $30mill = $49.5mill future funding

Ergo an $80.5mill difference

Haha butt hurt much?

Can you show me details of where they spend $200 mil please?

Butt hurt?

Why?

I also suspect the clubs are celebrating that your boss is staying...

In relation to the expenses... Refer to the annual report balance sheet under "Football" ... Explains all apparently..

Not surprised, disappointingly expected. But you live in hope that just once you might be wrong and the game might do what's best for the game. Then you remember you are a rugby league fan.

In fact the money hasn't really gone to the clubs, the money was offered to the clubs as well as promised to grass roots, the nrl then decided it wanted to spend more elsewhere. so the clubs are, probably, getting what they were offered and grass roots is paying for whatever the $80mill taken off them the nrl is going to use it for.
