It looks like Glebe have attracted enough players to field an A Grade this season. They are now looking for a coach.

Which comp will they field a team in? I guess the options are Souths A grade or the SCC?

Speaking of comebacks, Sydney uni have an eye on the RMS in the next couple of years

Glebe, as a Balmain club will play in the SCC with Canterbury, St George and Wests in A Grade. Souths & Easts are also in the teenage comps but Souths run separate A Grade and reserves comps. The districts are separate up to u/12.

That is interesting about Sydney Uni. They were in the second division for about 10 years and played in the preseason Wills Cup against the 1st Division teams.

I can recall Wentworthville and Ryde-Eastwood playing in the pre-season around 1970 but not Sydney Uni.

Ryde Eastwood certainly played a few years in the AMCO Cup mid week comp later in the 70's but the Rugby League Project has the preseason results for 1970 as follows:

Rd 1
Cronulla 12 University 2
Wenty 12 Parramatta 8

Rd2
Newtown 20 University 9
Wests 23 Wenty 0

Rd 3
Norths 14 University 4
Penrith 34 Wenty 7

Rd 4
University 19 Wenty 17

Although not listed on the RLP site I understand that Wenty, Penrith and Cronulla all played in the 1964 State Cup with Penrith beating Canterbury.

Memory can be hazy, it seems. I think I went to the game between Penrith and Wenty at Penrith.

It seems Glebe didn't get enough players to field a stand alone A Grade so have formed a JV with Concord Burwood who will wear the Glebe colours in some Ron Massey games.

Actually we entered into the Ron Massey arrangement with Concord Burwood in late January but we had to wait for the league to sign off before going public. We planned to run A grade alongside the RMC but a lack of local available ovals for training put us behind the 8 ball. Then the SCC comp start was brought forward 3 weeks and we were a little short on players so we decided to hold off on A grade for this year. We intend to field a couple of junior teams as well in Balmain Junior League. Exciting times. 31,969 days between drinks but Glebe is back.

I would have thought that Concord Burwood would have plenty of players available each week for A Grade - I could only see 2 in the Belrose team this week. As far as starting dates in the SCC are concerned, Auburn Warriors entered the 1st grade 5 weeks after the comp started and ended up minor premiers and premiers despite the start they gave away, so there might still be an opportunity.

That's true, but there is an issue with portability. Concord-Burwood-Glebe would only be allowed to send approximately two players back to Glebe SCC each week because of the quality of the players. If we received 8 RMC players each week it would provide an SCC team with an enormous advantage. We are happy to take our time. Ron Massey Cup and junior teams in year 1 of our comeback is a pretty good start.

Fair enough, but last year Kingsgrove had about 10 players playing in both RMC and A Grade every week, so some players appeared in 30 games between the 2 grades. They must have had some sort of exemption because the SCC rules stated that you could only play 4 starts and 4 interchange in NSW Cup, RMC or SS and after that you were ineligible to play in SCC. On the other hand Auburn A Grade had 5 players that had appeared in the NRL in previous seasons.

Based on what Concord Burwood were told when they asked about portability they must've tightened the rules this year. Our goal this year was always Ron Massey. The fit with Concord Burwood was a good one. We were too late to enter our own team in 2017, but had funding. Concord-Burwood had a great football program but needed more cash. Good result for all concerned. Our aim as a club is to field a team in Sydney Shield next year which would feed the JV Ron Massey team, while growing the juniors year-on-year.

I was under the impression that the Shield was being dissolved from next season with the new overhaul to state leagues.

This brings me to a question. Sydney Uni are playing the universities comp and are looking to step up to RM.
As I understand it the uni comp is pretty ordinary so they will have to recruit quite significantly

Could be interesting

RUGBY league referees, in the early 1900s, would flee Wentworth Park on foot.

The whistleblowers forced not only to sprint out of the ground through a baying mob, but then off and up Wattle Street to where a tram — hopefully — was waiting.

And if it wasn’t?

“Our fans were usually close behind,’’ Glebe official Darren Flynn laughs. “Thankfully though, things have changed a lot since then.

“Back in the day, Dirty Reds supporters wouldn’t only chase referees, but stand outside the opposition dressing room banging the walls with fence palings.

“You could say it was fairly intimidating.”

Likely why Glebe — which celebrates 110 years since formation on Tuesday — won around 70 per cent of all games at the venue, too.

And, now, wonderfully, the club — and code — is returning home.

For the first time in almost 90 years, rugby league is headed back to Wentworth Park as part of a blockbuster 2018 pre-season carnival involving Glebe and Newtown.

Better, the foundation clubs — widely recognised as Australia’s first and second respectively — are joining forces as part of an ongoing revival of league’s traditional roots.

After reviving themselves this year on Ron Massey Cup, the Dirty Reds will next winter act as a feeder team for the Newtown Jets, who play in the new Intrust Super premiership.

Apart from training together, the two former rivals will also conduct regular double headers at Henson Park.

And on February 11, the new pairing will also bring rugby league back to Wentworth Park — with each club taking on its counterpart from Blacktown Workers.

“According to our research, this will be the first game at Wenty Park since 1931,” Flynn says of a field now positioned inside Sydney’s famed greyhound track.

“That year, Balmain took on University.

“It’s also significant when you consider, back in 1908, Wentworth Park and Birchgrove Oval each held double-headers to start the Australian competition.

“From there, it became Glebe’s home ground for years.”

While the Sydney Roosters have previously used Wentworth Park as a training base, the ground inside the dog track is now a dedicated soccer pitch.

And as for what problems that throws up for any triumphant return?

“Ah, we’ve got to bring in our own goalposts,’’ Flynn laughs.

“Which is absolutely no problem.

“All up, it’s taken two years of discussions to make this a reality. But we’re hoping that once everyone sees the type of crowds we can bring, and the type of atmosphere that comes with a game day involving Glebe and Newtown, we’ll be able to play here regularly from 2019.”

Flynn added that partnering with the Jets was an easy decision to make.

“What Newtown have done, in the past five years particularly, has been incredible,’’ he said. “They’ve developed such a huge following.

“Their merchandising range, it’s second to none. And for bigger games at Henson Park, they’re attracting crowds in excess of 5000.

“It’s a game day experience, too, which plenty of people will argue is better than some NRL clubs here in Sydney.

“And that’s exactly where we hope Glebe can go in the future. We want to provide an experience for those league fans who still long for the halcyon days where you could have a beer and pie on the hill without breaking the bank.

“Games where your kids can run onto the ground afterwards and kick a footy.

“That’s the afternoon of footy we want to bring to Wentworth Park.”

Apart from being the first club to sign on with the NSWRL in 1908, the Dirty Reds can also lay claim to being the franchise most wronged by rugby league — removed, as they were, in 1929 thanks to subterfuge from Souths, Easts and Balmain.

Yet this year, a small band of volunteers revived the Dirty Reds in Ron Massey Cup.

And now, next up, is a return to their spiritual home.

Should be a great afternoon of footy at Wentworth Park. Hoping for a big crowd as the game returns to its birthplace for the first time since 1931.
