FYI. I am not the owner of all content published here. The owners are free to request anything to be removed should they ever discover this forum and the 5 people who frequent it.

The origins of the Dolphins' presence on the web began in a Redcliffe Dolphins igroup. Later, rleague.com agreed to host a simple Redcliffe site known as "The Redcliffe Dolphins Unofficial Website". Later the site made the switch to leagueunlimited.com as "Dolphins Online" (built by the leagueunlimited team) and was later endorsed by the club as their first official website.

Later, and I can't recall in what order, the Dolphins RLFC began work on their own independent website and this author's interest and ability to run a website began to wane.

Credit to rleague.com (now defunct), league unlimited, and the man who was the engine room of the site who now has a prominent position with the Redcliffe Dolphins Qld Cup side.

Dolphins Devilled

When Michael Roberts scored a classic halfback’s try from the base of the scrum in the 77th minute one could be forgiven for briefly forgetting the score and imagining you had witnessed the winning try. Nothing could have been further from the truth. Robert’s solo effort was nothing more than a consolation in the most egregious defensive effort by Redcliffe in the history of the Queensland Cup.

The Dolphins were as woeful as Norths were spectacular. Never before has this supporter witness so many holes open up in the Red & White’s defensive line. At times it was comical but was made all the more hard to bear by the bright moments Redcliffe showed with the ball in their hands.

Norths opened their account with ease courtesy of Brett Mulholland, before a Ryan Cullen try and Greg Bourke conversion saw the Dolphins lead the game in the 7th minute. Norths fired back with tries in the 14th, 18th, 21st and 26th minutes leaving Redcliffe shell shocked trailing 28 – 6. The last 10 minutes of the 1st half saw an improved effort from the Dolphins and they finished the half trailing by 16.

Six minutes into the second stanza and it was all over after giving away another two tries. Despite a brief rain shower passing earlier there was a black cloud hanging over the Dolphins and supporters at 60 – 18 however further embarrassment at the thought of 70 being wracked up was avoided with the late Dolphins try.

Defense and dropped ball will be high on coach Anthony Griffin’s hit list during the week and with Easts next week things will not get any easier.

Best for mine were Adam Starr and Matt Gruszka.

Norths 60 (Graham, Wilkie, Inglis, Mulholland 2, Laula-Togagae, Irwin, McDonald tries, Irwin 8 goals) def Redcliffe 24 (Cullen, Emmett, Roberts, Starr tries; Bourke 4 goals)

In A Grade Redcliffe showed good form to defeat Norths 34 – 12 in a cohesive display. The Dolphins were sharp in defense and signaled they will be a force to be reckoned with. Phil Shilvock put in a performance bound to have him in consideration for Qld Cup duty next week. Also impressive as ever close to the try-line was hooker Nathan Black.

Redcliffe34 (Shilvock 2, Giumelli, Bloomfield, Fox, Black, Jentz tries; Bloomfield 3 goals) def Norths 12 (Sila, Franks tries; Zipf 2 goals)

It was a hard day at the office for Colts who were thrashed 50 – 4 by the Devils. In a torrid affair involving three brawls Redcliffe spent ten minutes early in the 2nd half two men down costing them three tries and any chance of winning the match.

Norths 50 (Nicolau, Shortland, Perkins 2, Millwood, Starkey, Manu, Benson tries; Millwood 5 goals) def Redcliffe 4 (Maniat try)

Seagulls falter as Wally fires again

Before last Sunday’s 20-7 defeat at the hands of Redcliffe, De Morris told RLW Wynnum Manly’s biggest problem this season was getting in front early. “When we get in front, we stop,” a concerned Morris said. And that’s exactly what happened last Sunday. The Seagulls raced to a 7-0 lead after just 16 minutes and looked as though they had the measure of the tough, hard hitting Redcliffe defence. But then they folded; Redcliffe came back to score 20 points to nil including 15 points in the second half when they were down to 12 men.

Representative prop Peter Griffiths, back to his robust best, was sent from the field two minutes before halftime after he and State fullback Colin Scott were involved in a skirmish. Griffiths went for an early shower, charged with head butting, but Scott can think himself very lucky because there is no doubt he was the instigator. But that was only part of Redcliffe’s woes. During the first half they had lock Terry Webb and prop Tony Kajewski ‘binned’ for five and ten minutes respectively, while Wynnum half Peter Dawes also got a five minute ‘spell’ during the first half.

While referee David Redfern confused many people with some of his decisions and player dismissals, the binning of Dawes was the strangest. He dismissed the former Illawarra halfback for repeated scrum infringements after just 29 minutes, despite the fact Dawes had only been penalised twice for incorrect feeds. But the strange refereeing decisions and player dismissals aside, the match was a real triumph for Arthur Beetson’s Dolphins.

They have now won five of the past six matches and are without the most fearsome tackling side in the competition. When they hit, they hurt. The Redcliffe pack is well balanced, with lock Terry Webb and hooker George Trudgett good ball players, second-rower Wally Fullerton-Smith and prop Peter Griffiths the tackling machines and second-rower Vic Tighe and prop Tony Kajewski the runners. And with Colin Part pulling the strings at the base of the scrum for talented youngsters like five-eighth Steve Bleakley and fullback Trevor Benson, this side can only improve.

For a period of 10 minutes during the second half last Sunday, Wynnum camped in Redcliffe territory after winning five successive scrums and taking two penalties. Despite bombing at least three tries during that period, the Dolphins kept Wynnum out and in fact scored the try that turned the game in their favour after centre Steve Cherry scooted 70 metres. Wynnum were a bitter disappointment. They had enough possession to win, especially considering Redcliffe played the entire second half with only 12 men. But they seemed frustrated at not being able to break the rock-like Redcliffe defence.

Test prop Rod Morris tried hard, but he needs more support from his follow forwards. His experience can only be of more of more use to Wynnum if his teammates get with him. Captain Colin Scott played on despite a badly injured ankle and was virtually a passenger when Steve Cherry easily brushed him aside on his 70 metre run to the tryline. Scott’s refusal to be replaced most definitely cost him a Brisbane KB Cup berth for last night’s match against Parramatta. On the other hand, big performances from Fullerton-Smith and Cherry and Webb got them in the side.

The teams that day were

Dear Dolphin Supporter

The Gold Coast consortium that is looking to put a rugby league team in the NRL competition has stolen our Dolphin logo. There have been many newspaper reports on the ‘Dolphins’ NRL bid’ in the last six months.

To help us fight to keep the Dolphin we need to know what you think.

Have you found the newspaper coverage referring to the possible Gold Coast NRL team as the Dolphins misleading?

Have you started to read newspaper articles thinking the story was about Redcliffe, only to find it is about the Gold Coast?

Have any of your friends been confused or misled?

If so we need to hear from you. Please reply to this email, telling us what you think.

Help protect your Dolphin.

Regards

James Hinchey

The surprise packet of the trials was Souths Logan who upset heavyweights Toowoomba and Burleigh. New CEO Mitch Brennan has been talking the club up and star signings Jace Van Dijk (Raiders) and Aaron Lewis (Roosters) have led from the front. The Magpies were widely tipped for the wooden spoon in 2004 but have temporarily silenced their critics. They will get a chance to show what they have to offer in the Round 2 televised game against Brothers-Valleys.

Brothers-Valleys won their first unofficial hitout in the Qld Cup in a trial against premiers Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval. The “Blues” were too committed for the under-strength Dolphins who rested 12 regular first grade players. The merged club has changed it’s look for the third year in a row. The front of the new jersey design is the traditional Brothers Butchers striped while the royal blue of Valleys adorns the back. In their other two trials Brothers-Valleys were competitive but beaten.

The Central Comets chose to tough it out in 2004 with trials against NRL Clubs Manly, NQ Cowboys and St George-Illawarra. Despite the expected results Central proved they will be a more determined side than their disappointing showing last season.

Toowoomba have struggled in the trials after some early success winning the Newtown 10’s Knockout Competition. Jets were the runners up while Brisbane Norths also participated in the annual event hosted by the TRL club.

In other news Burleigh and Tweed are set to be winners if the proposed Gold Coast NRL Franchise gets the nod. The proposed club would place players with the two coast clubs rather than field their own feeder team in the Queensland Cup.

Redcliffe in stitches!

Redcliffe coach John Barber sent his test second rower, Wally Fullerton - Smith on a search and destroy mission at Lang Park last Sunday, but Barber meant the opposition, not his own players.

The Dolphins picked up the two valuable competition points with a gutsy 10-6 win over Wests, but paid a high price for the victory. Second - rower Vic Tighe had his career finished when he fractured his skull, while Bryan Niebling, Richie Poulsen and Steve Bleakley had a total of 60 stitches - between them - inserted in head wounds.

And most of the injuries could have been caused by the big-hitting Fullerton - Smith, who admits to being in every tackle which a Redcliffe player was injured. “ I haven’t seen the video yet, but I know I was involved in every tackle in which one of our blokes was hurt. I just hope I didn’t do all the damage,” he said.

But Barber was in no way disappointed in Fullerton - Smith, even if the injuries had been caused by his crashing defence. In fact, Barber praised the test second-rower and his experienced team-mates, half and skipper Mark Murray, centre cum lock Steve Cherry and hooker Shane Bernardin, for the manner in which they reacted to the immense pressure on centre field last Sunday.

The Dolphins were virtually recked. Still out through injury were Mitch Brennan, Brad Tessmann, Paul Khan, and John Ribot, whereas Niebling, Tighe and Bleakley had left the field in the first 25 minutes last Sunday.

As usual the Dolphins defence was their forte, although for the second week in a row they revealed some gaping holes in the middle early. But those holes closed and it wasn’t until a minute from fulltime that Wests were finally able to break through for a try. Then though, it was too late. Redcliffe had already broken the 2-2 deadlock in the 71st minute with a penalty goal, then followed through with the winning try to centre Dave Kirby, four minutes later.

And it was unfortunate for Wests hard working second-rower Steve Carter, the most dominant player on the field, that he was mainly responsible for Redcliffe skipping out of harms way in that 5 minute period. It was Carter who dived on the loose ball from an offside position to concede the penalty for Mark Schultz’s goal, and then he through the loose pass which Kirby was able to toe through and win the race to the line.

But that was typical of the match. Fierce defence and sloppy handling in the wet conditions dominated and it was always on the cards the team who could score the first try would the game.

Redcliffe’s experienced band excelled, but newcomers Kirby and John Clancy made every post a winner. Carter was Wests’ hardest worker, but elusive Jamie Sandy and smart halves Kevin Langer and Neil Wharton were always dangerous.

Scorers

Redcliffe 10 (D.Kirby try M.Schultz 2 goals, S.Bernardin, D.Weier field goals )

Wests 6 ( T.Watson try G.Balharry goal )

Scrums Redcliffe 14-9

Penalties Wests 12-10
