Rumours and Stuff

Remember, best case scenario is that your backups play zero games in first grade. How much do you want to be paying those guys?

Obviously teams use more than 17 players in a season. The player in any given squad who plays the 18th most number of games generally plays 12 games (half the season). So obviously you need him to be worth considerably more than minimum salary. The rest of your backups decline in value from there. Can you reshuffle your team so you bring in player 18 rather than a backup at a specialist position? Or are you forced to bring in a specialist half when one of your starters is unavailable? This is what determines how much you should pay your top backup half. We already have halves options in our 17, including Gutherson and Takairangi. We've probably offered Dargan a spot on minimum salary because that's what he's worth to us next year. But he could be holding out for a better offer from a club more in need of a backup halfback. You can't stockpile players any more. Even the Broncos had to let Ash Taylor go.

Yeah this is very true. Someone like a Dargan will consider a new home in future as Norman and Moses are recently signed and young so unless he forces his way into the team or plays as a 9/14 he wont have a lot of opportunity. He would probably stick it out for a year or two but then look for somewhere else once he has had some exposure I'd say.
As a back up though would you prefer Robson or Dargan. Dargan has potentially more upsides but he is not proven while Robson is.
If dargan doesn't see a future here in a year or two he will leave irrespective of the money we offer because other teams can offer more opportunity and hence more money lonf term

Maybe, hopefully, they were rusty after the bye but they'll have to improve big time to beat Broncos on that form. On that form Broncos will put 50 on us.

What's happened to Timmy, about 20 mins in first half and only remember him again with about 5 to go? He has gone from poor to bloody awful. We'll need another prop to replace him next year, surely he can't play fg the way he has been going lately.

Twal is one we should of kept. Snake was right. He is already superior to Tim.
You can't keep them if there's no room in the squad. We had already signed proven players and Twal only agreed to a one year extension. He obviously wanted opportunity and there wasn't any at Parra. Why do you reckon he chose the Tigers over any other club?

I rate Twal and I've made no secret of that but who says we didn't want to keep him? We might have offered him what we thought he was worth as a backup with talent. Cleary offered him a three year deal, obviously he had him as a first grade option. You don't sign backups to three year deals.

Why would he take, for example, a one year extension for minimum wage over a 3 year 125k offer?

What was wrong with his form last year? Or at 28 was he just too old?

Form was same as last 5 seasons. Doesnt really offer stuff all. Would be fine in a team where had a stand out prop. Props should have some of these.

Offload
Power/tackle break ability
Pass before line
Hard working/endurance
Aggressive
Leader
Good in wrestle

Not sure Tim has one of those. Used to be a hard worker and big mins, maybe he still has but BA doesnt want him to play that role.

Are you saying that defence is irrelevant to a prop? Apart from wrestle you seem to believe that defence isn't something a prop should have

Defense is something all must have to play first grade. Mannahs defense is workman like. Nothing brutal about it. Guys a marshmellow.
Alvaro has passed Tim as our workman like prop. We need an out and put no 1 prop like Vaughn. Kane evans can become that man.

Do ypu have a spot for Tim in 2018?

The fact that you and so many other miserable negative merkins miss is that YOU NEED F**KING BALANCE IN YOUR PACK. Vave technically "has defence", but it's shit and he's lazy.

You CANNOT carry a pack of Junior Paulo's any more than you can play a pack full of Tim Mannah. Unless you are lucky enough to hold on to or poach a Klemmer or a JWH, EVERY PROP is stronger in some areas and weaker in others. And even if you are lucky, that's one player.

There has always been a place for Mannah in our pack. Even this year, at full fitness, there was a place for Mannah in our pack. Probably even moreso than previously because we need to cover for slugs like Matagi, Vave, and Fritchard in defence and because our hooker is a rubbish defender.

You cannot foresee injury and illness. You can't predict that a player will lose or gain form. Who thought Gutho would be in the top 3 for Dally M points? Are the coaching staff supposed to be psychic?

You like to paint yourself as some kind of rugby league genius, but you can't even grasp the basics and you spend all your time changing what you say to match the trend....

Or what if we were willing to pay him what he was asking, but not guarantee him a shot at FG?

I'm with you on Twal, had a big wrap on him as a surefire first grader for years. To be fair, he hasn't gained weight like expected, and despite work ethic is a bit of a lightweight.

I just wish we'd made Paul Vaughan an offer.

Don't forget, we seem to have some decent 20's players coming through.

The club would have had to made a decision whether it's worth investing on Twal or of there are some better youngsters to invest in.

Twal is a "project" player not an experienced top 17 player.

It's a gamble, but really our junior system / structure looks pretty good now, putting out potential NRL players each year, so we no longer need to pay overs for back ups.

I also reckon BA and his brains trust had to make a decision between either Meehan or Twal for our 2018 squad.

And really Meehan is potentially the type of player we need to improve our squad (big prop) rather then a "worker" like Twal (we have Mannah/Alvaro/Peni )

Alvaro plays Tims role and Terepo is better then both. Run with grunt and great defender.

Jwh or Klemmer only?
Here are a few others who are good in both areas.

Which is odd, because defence is probably close to 60% if not more of what a prop does on the field.

In an average set from a kick return the first 3 hit-ups are covered by backs. It isn't usually until the 4th tackle that a forward touches the ball.

What gouldy fails to recognise as you point out below is that you want different types of forwards. What we want in Mannah is: line speed, defensive positioning, and a captain. Why would we need to use Mannah on a hit-up when we have 8 other players who are better at running the ball than he is?

As Pou likes to say. You can choose who you give the ball to.

Im just telling you whats wrong with our squad.
Tims fine. If we had Napa and JWH starting with Tim off bench.
In our pack we have Terepo and Alvaro who can play his role.I think both are better players.
Look at what the top sides have.

Most dont have pint size winger, half.
With Hoffman back on team we have another guy who is small.
Compare it to the roosters storm or broncos 1-7.
Its a power game. If we want to win with our squad we need to play flamboyant footy not grinding with bigger stronger more physical teams ffs
