The Canberra Raiders have signed Tongan international Siliva Havili on a one-year deal for the 2018 season.

Havili was an instrumental part of the recent Tongan World Cup campaign, as the Tongans progressed to the Semi-Final stage of the tournament where they narrowly lost to England.

He has played 24 NRL matches since making his debut for the New Zealand Warriors in 2014, including 10 matches for the St George Illawarra Dragons in 2016.

Raiders NRL Recruitment & High-Performance Manager said the signing of Havili gives the Raiders NRL squad some more depth in the hooking position, with Josh Hodgson set to miss the start of the season with a knee injury.

“Siliva had a wonderful World Cup tournament for Tonga and he joins the squad to give us some depth to cover the unfortunate loss of Josh Hodgson,” Mulholland said.

“We’re looking forward to him joining the squad and having a solid pre-season with his new club.”

Honestly it's for the best for all involved. We have McInnes locked up with a more promising junior hooker coming through who is close to the point where they can fulfill the backup position if needed.

Raiders desperately need hooker depth after Hodgeson doing his ACL

IMO....no great loss! It's better we have given the Raiders our 2 rejects in Garvey & Havili than the other usual way from our feeder club. About time we returned serve.

Old news... his contract ended on November 1, he hasn't been a Dragons player since then so who cares

I take it that the big X in the article means disapproval.
This is how I feel. His games for Tonga showed he could play. Good service out of DH, decent middle defence and importantly, versatile(could switch to back row). With no apparent back up for McInnes(until Robson is ready)Havili was a great option to give McInnes a spell. Maybe that player is Nichols, time will tell.

Lol Rein was awful. Just awful!

When we look at the pivotal moments leading up to our 2019 premiership win, the top 3 will be the sacking of Mary mid 2018, the signing of Hunt early 2017 and the removal of Rein from our team in 2016!!

So, the Dragons will be the 2019 premiers?

I admire your optimism.

It'll take years to recover from McGregor's 'legacy'.

Get an experienced coach (hopefully a premiership winning one), tweak the backline and hooking role, then we can start dreaming about the Dragons being a serious challenger again.
