Five St George Illawarra players have been named in the New South Wales Origin Emerging Blues squad to assemble in Sydney next January.

Zac Lomax, Reece Robson, Hame Sele, Jai Field and Matt Dufty were all named in Brad Fittler's inaugural Emerging Blues squad.

The squad, comprised of players potentially destined for higher honours and State of Origin representation, will assemble at ANZ Stadium on Saturday, 13 January for a session with NSW True Blue Origin legends ahead of the 2018 season.

Andrew Johns, Craig Fitzgibbon, Matt King, Mark O’Meley and Anthony Minichiello will join Fittler and Blues assistant coach Danny Buderus at the camp in specialist positional coaching roles. In addition to undertaking skills work, Emerging Blues will attend presentations preparing the young stars for league’s toughest arena.

"I’ve brought these players in because they’re players I really respect and I believe they can learn a lot from the camp – both on and off the field," Fittler said.

"The majority of these players are young stars already playing first grade, or on their way to the top grade. These players will be the backbone of the NSW Origin team going forward. They all have a big future.

"We’re hoping they get a lot from the Emerging Blues camp, about expectations, and learning from some of NSW Origin’s best former players, who I have played with and really respect."

Five St George Illawarra players, including Shellharbour junior Jai Field and fullback Matt Dufty, have been chosen in the NSW ‘emerging Blues’ squad for next year.

With a view to developing them as a future generation of NSW stars, Dufty, Jai Field, Zac Lomax, Reece Robson and Hame Sele have been included on the list.

Good signs having these players in the squad. Hopefully our coaching staff pay particular attention and give them the support for our club so they become stronger for us.
This is a big wrap on Lomax. Looking forward to seeing him in 2018.

CALLED UP: Hame Sele was one of five St George Illawarra players named in NSW coach Brad Fittler's

BRAD Fittler’s appointment as NSW coach was widely applauded and you can add Dragons young-gun Hame Sele’s voice to the chorus.

Sele was one of five St George Illawarra players named in Fittler’s Emerging Blues squad on Friday with Matt Dufty, Jai Field, Zac Lomax, Reece Robson also getting call-ups.

The 21-year-old, who played 15 games in his debut NRL season, was handed his first rep jersey by Fittler, who coached and underdog City line-up to a 20-10 victory over Country in May.

Fittler won also won praise in coaching Lebanon to within two points of a semi-finals berth at the recent World Cup and Sele was quick to endorse his coaching abilities.

“I was really honoured and really lucky Brad gave me that opportunity,” Sele said.

“He was really relaxed and down to earth and kept things pretty simple for us middles. He gave me a starting spot which I didn’t expect but he really put me at ease and just told me to stay patient, stay calm and just do what I needed to do.

“There were a lot of times where he’d joke around and have a laugh but but as soon as we hit that field it’s time to stop mucking around and get to work. He was really, really big on that.

“I really think he deserved [the NSW job] after the way he brought us together.”

Sele, Field and Dufty made their NRL debuts in 2017 and, along with Robson, have all featured for the NSW under 20s during the Blues six-year reign of dominance, while Lomax was named the NSWRL under 18s player after booting the winning field-goal in Blues 29-28 victory over Queensland in July.

Fittler has huge wraps on Hame Sele. Picked him in City Origin side this year and had nice things to say about him. He thinks he has good ball playing ability which we did not see much of I must admit but Freddy has so wait and see.

Best not to over hype them, but Dufty probably has the brightest future of the lot.

Marsters of None

St George Illawarra fullback Steven Marsters' complex sporting pedigree has helped position him in the Dragons' full-time training squad for at least the next two seasons.

Other than his cousin, Wests Tigers young gun Esan, Marsters has plenty of knowledge to rely on in the form of his extended family.

Marsters' mum was a gun tennis player while his dad kept it in the family with his rugby league prowess. The 18-year-old's nan was a sprinter, and his grandad was a long distance runner.

As Marsters' describes it, his family's sporting history "is a bit all over the place".

Thankfully his parents opted for rugby league, first at the Mt Wellington Warriors before they made the move over to Australia.

"I had no clue about rugby league until my dad introduced it to me. He opened up my eyes to a different world and I've loved it ever since," Marsters said.

"I was five when I first started and have only had a year off since. I thank my mum and dad for that. They have got me to where I am so I’m very thankful for that."

Cousin Esan remains another inspiration for Marsters following the Tiger's first grade debuting season which saw him rack up 13 NRL games.

"Esan's has taught me everything which is good because I'm obviously following him," Marsters said.

"I’ve seen him play NRL and my dream is to follow in his footsteps. But obviously I still have a long way [to go]."

Almost halfway through his first NRL pre-season, Marsters admitted he's had to keep grounded while he's running around with seasoned first graders.

He's also grateful to have fellow Under-20s players Zac Lomax, Tristan Sailor and Jackson Ford partake in their first pre-season too.

"It's been unreal," Marsters said. "It's always been a dream to play with these fellas. They have always been my idols and I have always looked up to them.

"They have been good to me at training and have pushed me through all the hard times. Jack De Belin, Tariq Sim and Patrick Herbert have motivated me to be my best.

"Coming up with Tristin and Zac has been pretty cool too," he added. "They are all good players and being alongside them has been good. I’m pretty happy where I am at."

The good news about the above list is that of the 5 in the squad 3 have already debited for us.
I can see the other 2 getting a run this year especially Lomax.
