MWRL 2018 will kick off on Friday July 27th in Chicago with the Stockyarders, Joliet XRL and one yet to be announced team playing in a round robin format as with previous years in our local development competition. Games will be 9-a-side and will be played over 2 x 20 minute periods. Further details will be announced as the competition approaches.

If this succeeds then certainly there is potential for a mid west division, in the same style to Canadian rugby league.

That is certainly the idea. We nearly got there in 2012 when we had four teams play in the MW and three teams in 2014. We look to get back to that stage and are planning to operate three teams locally this year and eventually apply as a whole to be a conference in the USARL.

Wallabies played against the Eagles in Chicago few years back and a descent crowd turned out. I also read a reporter saying they have a 16 team comp in the city as well.

Surprised that you haven't been able to find more Rugby teams from the city wanting to put their hand up for the XIII player code.

All the best none the less

There is definitely a market for Rugby league in the city. Plenty of the union playing community want to try our sport and commit to it if it fits with their own schedule. We just need to be able to offer regular fixtures to the rugby playing community and time the games well as not to clash with 7's or 15's Rugby.

Has any interest come from nearby Milwaukee or surrounding areas ?
We have from players, we have had several players travel down form that area over the years to play in our Chicago based games. We are looking into the feasibility of starting a new team to add to the MWRL stable alongside the Stockyarders and Joliet. Wisconsin is certainly in the running.

Stayed in Milwaukee with friends mid 2016 and left them info about the exhibition game played there in the 80's (?) between the two English teams. So I know at least one local family knows about RL !!! :)
