That's why soccer is the most popular sport at junior level now. As soon as the Afl saw the threat they banned shirt front's and any head high bumps fines for any melees etc to try get the kids back.. they have a very good junior programme called auskick which is pretty well run.

I was involved in RL in schools in Adelaide for sometime and it was going well, kids loved it. But you could see the growth of soccer.... it is by far the most popular sport at junior level. Not sure what they are doing there now in terms of RL...I moved. Hopefully it is still gaining traction.

Wonder if Leaguetag is getting some traction in such an area? It would be a revelation! Unfortunately touch football has gone rogue with some of its fundamental rules in the ruck (no play the ball with foot etc) and this has detracted from the 'rugby league' type experience that was originally a big part of touch football which was "tippy league".

Wondering if OZTAG is affiliated with rugby-league like Leaguetag is? Does anyone know? BOTH are very much rugby league like.

Heres one for you, shows what a liar the bearded one from the commission was.

apparently grass roots RL was promised a large increase to their budget instead in reality it was almost halved.
The NRL/ARL commission needs to at the very least to double the money they spend on junior development, and in my opinion SOO and international players should give a percentage of their appearance money to junior development

Absolutely on the first point. One the second I think they just need to cut it or more appropriately cut the executives salaries.
But they also have to be honest about it. Grant lied through his teeth about increasing Grass roots funding.
They need to study the AFL model which works. But first they need to understand that the game doesn't start with the NRL

I read somewhere that the owner of oztag went to the nrl in like 99 and said he had this game and the nrl should start it up. Nrl said it will never be more popular than touch.

Then in like 2010 they made league tag in response to oztag and in 2016 they bought oztag for like 20m.

I dont have sources tho so could be false.

Leaguetag is getting big. And I play Oztag which is big. It sounds familiar to when touch footy approached the ARL in the 90s for affiliation and the ARL knocked it on the head. These dudes in develooment are not very smart! Unfortunately touch footy would have been far more like its original version(we hope)if the ARL did see the merit of bringing the former (tippy league) under its wing. Then again, maybe they would not have realised the need to reintroduce fundametal original rules like playing the ball with the foot etc? Who knows! They(ARL/NRL) have a track record of making things more difficult than what they should be!

Yes, the NRL is but a cherry on top, the mums and dads that make the game could easily discard and not miss it

Yes. Very much so. They have helped make the code socially /culturally irrelevant. The destruction of longtime popular clubs with mergers, the exclusion of others from longtime rugby league loving districts (North Sydney/Central Coast) and the issue of playing local rugby league comps on Sundays instead of the socially and culturally more appealing and relevant Saturdays are all negatively impacting on rugby league at grass roots (mum and dad level). In addition, the poor selling of the code and its virtues to the public hasnt helped either!

Thats silly playing grass roots Rugby League on a Sunday as I bet the players miss out following the pro teams...has that always been the case as always thought grass roots League was played early on a Saturday and then the clubs have time to watch the NRL etc ?

One major issue for the code going forward was the fact that the Opens grade play on SUNDAYS. This in itself would limit young people opting to play the code as most would go for the more socially attractive Saturday game day offering that other codes like union offer. Otherwise it looks pretty good.

Yes Teddyboy. Thats been the case in alot of local league comps around NSW for decades. The younger age groups can and should play on Sundays up till say 12 or 14s. Then the Open grade/adults , 14s and above should play on Saturday morning/afternoon. However we have it that the adults and maturing adolescents are having to play on Sundays which is entirely anti social and against player welfare for recovery purposes . Most people should know that rugby league is by far the most physical football code and to have the players get busted on a Sunday and no chance to recover except to miss work or battle through a Monday is ludicrous! All senior local rugby league should be played on a Saturday. This is where the RL administrators have got it blatantly wrong. It's ok if necessary to have the under 14s to 18s on a Sunday but definitely not open age. The more family friendly day for the little youngsters can be done for Sunday mornings. Have Saturday for the older kids and adults! It makes sense!

I believe the A-Grade play a mix of Sundays and Saturdays.

Yes. Its got to be all Saturdays for the code to gain players that are playing union. And there are many doing this purely due to the day of play. It effects social life and recovery time after a game. Moreso in rugby league which is far more physical than all football codes. The players deserve their social enjoyment and decent recovery!

What time do they play on a Sunday in the open group and also do adults play on a Saturday still.
So playing Union on a Saturday and watching League on a Sunday would of been the norm but if open grade play on a Sunday then at least have it at lunch time so the players can catch the NRL on TV at the clubhouse or get to the ground.

Nope. Many local league's play at 3pm on the Sunday. In Newcastle the inner city clubs (where the code is struggling for junior numbers )often play when the Knights are playing on a Sunday. The three inner city district clubs had twenty Sunday home games out of a possible 24 home games last season. Notably the coalfield clubs play home games on Saturdays and Maitland v Cessnock played the under19s grand final last season. (The inner city district clubs struggled to get numbers for the 19s comp) . It's clear what's happening if you look at when the clubs are playing their games. Mind you prior to 1970 all senior district rugby-league played on a Saturday. Back then the code was booming! A number of clubs sought to capitalize on the "church crowd " And it worked for some big crowds for a while then a flow of RL juniors to rugby union started to take effect and now union is overtaking league in inner city junior numbers in recent years! Their are also many people(many of them pensioners ) in the inner city football club committees that prefer staging Sunday games as it suits their lifestyle. (bugger the players and fans!)

NRLWA teams play Saturdays. re following your team, there are more NRL games on a Saturdays now than on Sundays!

With the way NRL fixtures are these days it really wouldn't matter what day Jnr RL was on! Take Newcastle, last season the Knights played games pn
Friday night x2
Saturday x6
Sunday x4

So in effect Sunday RL meant were more likely to be able to go to a Knights game.

Correct. That's not what is at stake here. It's the playing day preferences for young adults. SATURDAY is clearly the best day for both social relevance and player recovery reasons. It should be a MUST DO rule for all local level rugby league competitions. Otherwise other codes, as witnessed in Newcastle, are gaining our players.
