Commonwealth Games Category Review

Some interesting information in the following interview on the Wales Rugby League site.

States that Rugby League will be eligible to potentially move from a Category 3 Commonwealth sport to a Category 2 sport (and thus eligible to be included in the games) in 2022/23.

http://www.walesrugbyleague.co.uk/article/16315/commonwealths-another-step-forward-for-wrl

"Rugby League's global governing body, the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF), asked the Commonwelath Games Federation over five years ago how the sport could become part of the Commonwealth Games. In their response they offered no guarentees however the Federation said rugby league must become a category 2 sport in order to be considered. It is currently category 3, and this status would be reviewed after the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

"In the meantime the Commonwealth Games Federation asked the RLIF to do commit to two programmes of work. Firstly, continue to establish and develop the sport in Commonwealth nations especially those in the Caribean, Asia and Africa. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, commit to delivering a Commonwealth Championships around the Games themselves. Whilst officially recognised by the Federation, these events would recieve no financial or logistical support from them. This was a test to the sport to see how committed it was.

"Thankfully the RLIF and its member nations such as Wales are committed. So far two fantastic events have been delivered in Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018, the latter having $150,000 Australian Dollars invested into the event by the RLIF, building upon the first mens competition by adding two new competitions for women and disabled athletes. The hugely entertaining games streamed around the world and involving many partners have been a great success.

"Next up will be Birmingham 2022, after which the Commonwealth Games Federation will let know rugby league know its fate. The answer may be no however there can be doubt the sport had tried to do become part of the games and certainly moved a few steps forward into one day doing so.

Wonder if other football codes had to go through the same hoops for Commonwealth Games status? Would have thought the newly gained GSAIF status might have helped rugby-league's cause?

It would probably help if there was some kind of yearly calendar of regular tournaments involving a reasonable number of genuinely national teams.

That's what you-know-who had as a big reason for Olympic inclusion.

Yeah. Actually being played in a reasonable number of Commonwealth nations in a reasonable number of events aren't "hoops"

Depends on your definition of hoops. Perhaps the code has tried to gain traction in other countries and has encountered "hoops"? Big hoops!

Who exactly is stopping the establishment of a proper Nines circuit? Name some names.

Not necessarily a Nines comp dopey! The code of rugby league has quite a few obstacles. Would you like me to enlighten you!? I have plenty of factors and happy to inform. And yes you do have form Knownothing. And you have named yourself appropriately if you are unaware that rugby league has significant obstacles both within and outside of the code.

Silly, dopey, me. I thought this was a thread about the Commonwealth Games?

Apparently every thread has to end up blaming somebody else for everything.

Is Nines not a part of rugby league!? You will find that Nines is a part of rugby league whether you like it or not! it's very relevant "dopey"!

So which rugby league organisation is going to establish a regular series of Nines tournaments? Even a dope like me knows that this is the most important step in attaining full Commonwealth Games status. It has to happen sooner or later, or are you suggesting waiting until RU is wiped out, somehow?

Pretty sure their is no requirement for an international series? Perhaps if its evidence of international participation then an annual international Nines tournament should be a main priority no doubt! That should please the powers that be or are their more hoops for the recently gained "GSAIF Observer status" football code?

The Commonwealth Games didn't contain team sports until 1998 (when Sevens was added as a Cat 2 sport), but the IRB had been recognised by the CGF for decades beforehand, so compared how long they had to wait (Rugby Union Sevens has been around since 1880s and has had international tournaments since 1973), only having to wait 9 years to find out our fate isn't too bad.

Since being added as a Cat 3 sport, we have actually done an ok job against the KPIs we were given.

We have already achieved the KPI of hosting 2x successful Commonwealth Championships, whilst we have also grown our presence in Africa in Commonwealth nations.

Where we still need to improve is Asia and the Caribbean. For Asia, we need to put some extra effort into our small India & Pakistan outposts, whilst we need help for the Caribbean.

Just a thought! Rugby league hosted the first ever rugby world cup? So I'm thinking that should be a recognisable feat for the code. Looks like that fact doesn't figure?

Why would it?

You seem to think rugby union has been around longer in various formats. Btw first time I've heard Sevens was about at the time you inform of ? And would not a world cup give credibility and acknowledgement of a code? And it's a fact that rugby league hosted the first ever rugby world cup. Can't be denied! But I suppose it can be ignored!?
